Big Game Hunting for Week Three 2016

In my time doing Big Game Hunting I cannot recall any other regular season week in which the top games were so obvious. Week three has it all, consistent Top-Ten battles across five of the six classifications, the two leading passers in the WPIAL, the leading rusher and scorer in the WPIAL, and three of the top six receivers in the WPIAL. All of this saves me the trouble of having to come up with an engaging and interesting opening paragraph, and let’s be honest I was only hitting about .250 at that to begin with so, without further ado, let’s go Big Game Hunting!
CTK ’16: 2-A Century Conference Preview

The Century Conference has been dominated lately by South Fayette, which won four consecutive conference championships from 2012-15. But there will no longer be a roar of the Lions in the Century. With the new six-classification system, there is still a Century Conference. But South Fayette no longer is part of it. South Fayette is now part of Class 4A. So there will be a new champion this year. Almost everyone points toward Washington as the team that will win it. Welcome to Week 12 of the high school football season. After a rough week of prognosticating the WPIAL quarterfinals, Chick’s Picks decided that a day of relaxation was in order. After all, she needed a clear mind (and crystal ball) as we approach this final stop on the Highway to Heinz. So, Chick’s Picks and her trusty crystal ball headed out to their favorite local spa. Their spa treatment specialists greeted them and showed them to their appointments. An hour later, a much more relaxed Chick’s Picks emerged, awaiting the arrival of her crystal ball. A Steel Valley player made some history last week. Now, the Steel Valley team will try to make some more history Friday night. It went pretty much unnoticed, but Steel Valley running back DeWayne Murray surpassed 4,000 career yards rushing last week in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs. Although close to 70 runners have gained 4,000 yards rushing in their careers, it is a noteworthy feat for Murray because he is only a junior and is the first Steel Valley player to reach 4,000 yards. Murray has 4,097 yards on 363 attempts, an impressive 11.3 yards-per-carry average. Because he is only a junior, he has a good chance to next year become the 17th runner in WPIAL history to gain 5,000 career yards.WPIAL Friday Night HighLights – First Round

The lights are just a little bit brighter as 64 teams entered the district postseason three wins away from reaching every teams ultimate goal, a spot on the parking list for Championship Saturday at Heinz Field. There is no question that in the ultimate team sport, you need everybody in to win and advance at this point, but sometimes you need a player to step up and take control with an outstanding performance to keep your season alive at least for another week. The WPIAL football playoffs start Friday night. Does that mean the Tri-County South Conference turns into the Tri-County Sour bunch once again? The Tri-County South in Class A hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2010 season. Since then, Tri-County South teams are 0-16 in the postseason. But maybe there is hope to end the postseason drought this year. Frazier finished the regular season with a 9-0 record and the Commodores were given the No. 4 seed. Frazier led the entire WPIAL in fewest points allowed this season and it plays host to South Side in a first-round game.Chicks Picks – Week 6 – 2015

Welcome to Week 6 of the high school football season. Friday nights at MSA Sports World Headquarters are hard work. As a reward, The Boss provides delicious dinner for the crew from the best pizza place in town. Last week, an unfamiliar delivery man showed up with the evening’s provisions. As he handed over the order, however, it became obvious that something was not right. When the crew began to question the delivery man, he panicked and ran for the exit—right into the regular delivery man who was bringing the actual order. The spill caused the impersonator to lose the contents of his pockets, including his cell phone, which happened to start ringing at that exact moment—caller I.D.: The Fumbler.Scholastic Notebook – 09/25/2015

It’s a Zane-y world out there in WPIAL football so far this season. After the first three weeks of the season, Zane Dudek is atop the WPIAL in rushing yards – and also points scored. Dudek is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound junior running back at Armstrong High School. This is Armstrong’s first year of existence after Ford City and Kittanning merged to form Armstrong. Dudek is certainly bringing some attention to the Riverhawks. Dudek has rushed for 736 yards on 67 carries, an average of 10.9 yards a carry. No other WPIAL running back has 600 yards rushing. Time is inexorable, I know that, but nonetheless I find myself wanting to slow things down once the WPIAL football season begins. For a lot of reasons, to give myself more time to prepare for my game, to be able to have a little extra time to enjoy what is for me the best time of the year, to slow the inevitable cold-weather from getting here and, to lengthen the deadline to get Big Game Hunting into the Boss. I don’t have to tell you how he can be when you get on his bad side. Time goes by fast, and the older you get the faster it goes. Week three is here and I am almost ready with my pre-season Big Game Hunting. Speaking of time, how long has it been since the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars started a season 0-2?
CTK 2015 – Class A Tri-County South 7 Conference Preview

The Tri-County South is more like the Try Beating Beth-Center Conference Beth-Center moved into the Tri-County South in 2008. Since then, the Bulldogs have won the conference title five times, including four in a row. Beth-Center has lost only one conference game in the past four years. So the question is will Beth-Center’s dominance continue? Probably. The Bulldogs look to be the team to beat again, one year after they outscored conference opponents, 397-47.
