Chicks Picks – Week 6 – 2015

Welcome to Week 6 of the high school football season.

Friday nights at MSA Sports World Headquarters are hard work. As a reward, The Boss provides delicious dinner for the crew from the best pizza place in town. Last week, an unfamiliar delivery man showed up with the evening’s provisions. As he handed over the order, however, it became obvious that something was not right.

When the crew began to question the delivery man, he panicked and ran for the exit—right into the regular delivery man who was bringing the actual order. The spill caused the impersonator to lose the contents of his pockets, including his cell phone, which happened to start ringing at that exact moment—caller I.D.: The Fumbler.

The Boss snatched the phone and hit the answer button. The Fumbler’s voice on the other end was clear, “Well, did you get it? Did you get that crystal ball?”

Chick’s Picks was stunned when she realized the lengths that her rival had gone to in an attempt to disrupt her prognosticating success. The Boss put it simply, “Chick’s Picks, be flattered. Everyone wants to be the best. But there’s only room for you and that crystal ball of yours at the top.”

Chick’s Picks finished last week with a 53-11 (83%) record, upping her season total to 256-68 (79%). Here are this week’s big games:

CLASS AAAA
#8 Bethel Park (3-2) at #6 Mount Lebanon (5-0)

The Blue Devils look to remain perfect when they play host to the Black Hawks in a Southeastern Conference showdown Friday night. Mount Lebanon is coming off of a 37-19 victory over Peters Township, while Bethel Park blanked Chartiers Valley, 34-0. The Black Hawks have been perfect since dropping this season’s first two games to top-ranked Central Catholic and Woodland Hills. Veteran quarterback Levi Metheny leads Bethel Park with 836 yards and 10 touchdowns. Running back Terron Murphy has boosted the Black Hawk ground game, rushing for 763 yards and seven touchdowns. Mount Lebanon running back David Harvey has racked up 511 yards and eight touchdowns so far this season. When these two met last season, the Blue Devils came out on top, 30-22. Chick’s Picks predicts a Black Hawks upset this time around.

CLASS AAA
#4 Hampton (5-0) at #5 Franklin Regional (4-1)

Hampton hits the road to take on Franklin Regional and defend its top spot in the Greater Allegheny Conference Friday night. Last week, the Talbots blanked Knoch, 28-0, while the Panthers knocked off Armstrong, 35-26. Hampton is backed by the ground game of Matt Rech, who has rushed for 652 yards and seven touchdowns on the year. Franklin Regional boasts versatile quarterback Santino Birty, who has pass for 422 yards and is one of the team’s leading rushers with 363 yards and eight touchdowns. When these two met last season, the Talbots topped the Panthers, 28-21. Chick’s Picks predicts that the Talbots will remain perfect.

CLASS AA
#1 South Fayette (5-0) at #5 Steel Valley (5-0)

Steel Valley hosts top-ranked South Fayette in an Interstate Conference battle of epic proportions Friday night. The Ironmen remained perfect last week after knocking off undefeated Freeport, while the Lions routed Carlynton, 62-14. Quarterback Drew Saxton leads a high-powered South Fayette offense that averages 54 points per game. Saxton has passed for 740 yards and 16 touchdowns on the year. Standout sophomore DeWayne Murray handles the backfield duties for Steel Valley, rushing for over 500 yards and 12 touchdowns so far this season. The defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Lions come into this matchup on a 37-game winning streak. Chick’s Picks predicts that the streak will stay alive.

CLASS A
#8 Frazier (5-0) at #10 Beth-Center (4-1)

The undefeated Commodores travel to Fredericktown to battle the Bulldogs in Tri-County South Conference action Friday night. Frazier maintained its unblemished record with a 42-7 win over Leechburg last week, while Beth-Center blanked West Greene, 67-0. The Commodores boast the top defense in the WPIAL, recording three shutouts and allowing only 10 points all season. That defense will be tested though, facing the Bulldogs’ Tony Welsh—one of the top running backs in the WPIAL. Welsh surpassed the 1,000-yard mark already this season, and has rushed for a WPIAL-best 18 touchdowns. When these two met last season, Beth-Center handed Frazier its only loss of the regular season, 29-20. Chick’s Picks believes that the Bulldogs will blemish that perfect Commodores record once again.
