Freedom Wins First WPIAL Soccer Gold With Win Over Freeport

The #1 seeded Freedom Bulldogs got two goals each from sophomores Michaela Watkins and Myla Sharpless to defeat #2 seed Freeport 4-1 Thursday night at Highmark Stadium to capture the 2016 WPIAL 2A Girls Soccer Championship. Freedom entered the game undefeated, having given up only 8 goals all season, none in the playoffs, and continued their unbeaten streak with a stifling defense and opportunistic offense that saw 4 goals scored on only 7 shots on net. Michaela Watkins started the scoring at the 30:54 mark of the first half as she took a lead pass and broke in alone on Freeport keeper Cassie Suran, beating her with a quick shot to make it 1-0 Freedom.Scholastic Notebook – 10/21/2016

For the first time in WPIAL history, there could be a Lady in the football playoffs. No, it’s not a female player or coach. It’s the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart team. The Chargers started playing WPIAL football in 2010 and failed to make the postseason in the first six years of the program. OLSH could turn out to be one of the big turnaround stories in the WPIAL this season. The Chargers did not win a game last year, going 0-9. Now they are 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big Seven Conference. They are almost assured of a playoff berth, with games remaining against Sto-Rox and Shenango. Rochester leads the conference at 6-0, Northgate is 5-1 and OLSH and Sto-Rox are tied at 4-2. Shenango is fifth at 3-3.MSA Sports Friday Night HighLights for Week Six

The second half of the WPIAL football season began with a BANG...albeit a very wet bang. Or in the case of Class 3-A Allegheny Conference front running Keystone Oaks, the second half began with a POWE, as in newly eligible wide receiver Quran Powe. CTK ’16: 2-A Midwestern Athletic Conference Preview

The Midwestern Athletic Conference has had a rich history. In the 60’s and 70’s it was New Castle, showing why the Red Hurricanes are among Pennsylvania’s most historic programs. The late 80’s brought the addition of Aliquippa, setting up historic meetings with Riverside. Since the mid 90’s, the conference hadn’t changed much as the Quips, along with Beaver Falls, New Brighton and Beaver have been at the top of the standings. With the move to 6 classes, some new teams take up residence in the MAC. Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, Neshannock, Riverside and South Side move up to AA, while Freedom, Laurel, Mohawk and New Brighton look to add to the history of the MAC.

New Faces - New Places - New Hopes - New Dreams. While there were two fewer coaching changes this off-season then before the 2015 campaign, there were a couple of big names that hung up the whistle after last fall. Legendary McKeesport coach George Smith retired for a second time while record setting coach Tom Nola exited at Gateway. There are a lot of rookie head coaches getting their first crack, and some coaches who are just changing hats and addresses. Whatever the case, there are 17 coaching changes coming into this 2016 season. Here are the new football coaches that will be running the sidelines in the WPIAL this fall. Burrell (11-5) survived a nail-biter in the semifinals, but then rolled to a 48-17 victory in the championship match over Freedom to win the 2016 WPIAL Class AA team wrestling championship on Saturday afternoon at Chartiers-Houston High School. On a very rainy Monday evening, the Freedom Bulldogs and Central Valley Warriors girls volleyball teams faced off in a pivotal section matchup and decided to turn the heat up in Section 2-AA. Central Valley entered this mid-season match in 2nd place in the section with a section record of 4-1 (6-1 overall). Freedom entered this match with a record of 3-2 (4-3 overall) good for the middle of the 2-AAA pack. On this night, it was all Central Valley as they defeated Freedom in straight sets 25-9, 25-10, and 25-21.
CTK 2015 – Class AA Midwestern Athletic Conference

Often referred to as the MAC, it is an acronym for the Midwestern Athletic Conference. Maybe it should stand for Mighty Aliquippa Continues. The Quips have absolutely dominated the MAC this decade. Since 2010, Aliquippa has won five straight outright conference championships and has been rarely challenged in section going a staggering 38-0. Even when they lose star players to graduation, there is another young stud waiting in the wings to dawn the black and red and continue the tradition. But there are eight other MAC teams who feel the conference could stand for Maybe Aliquippa Can’t. Is that false hope in the dawning of a new season, or is there a Tiger or other cat of a different stripe ready to pounce and shock the Quips and the rest of the WPIAL nation?
GCC Crushes Freedom For 3rd Girls A Soccer Title in 4 Years

The start was at 11:00am, but for the Freedom Bulldogs it may as well been at midnight. Freedom was not able to finish off their Cinderella run when they lost to the top seeded Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions 9-1 in WPIAL Class A Soccer Championships. The game started out like the semi-final game for Freedom vs Shady Side Academy and they controlled the ball and played offense most of the first five minutes. The problem was though after that it was all Centurions. Greensburg opened the scoring when senior Cassie Sauder took a shot from twenty yards out and it cleared the Bulldogs keeper Jacklyn Hartle at the 7:58 mark.CTK ’14: WPIAL AA Midwestern Athletic Conference Preview

2013 was another great season in the Midwestern Athletic Conference as Aliquippa made their sixth straight trip to Heinz Field. Overall, the Quips have won three titles in that time and fifteen overall. Beaver and Beaver Falls also had outstanding seasons, again making the trip on the Highway to Heinz. Also qualifying for the first time since 2003 were the New Brighton Lions. 2014 should prove to be a good season as well. The MAC gets some new members as Laurel rejoins the conference and the Summit Academy moves in from the Allegheny.
