MSA Sports Friday Night HighLights for Week Six
October 8, 2016
The second half of the WPIAL football season began with a BANG...albeit a very wet bang. Or in the case of Class 3-A Allegheny Conference front running Keystone Oaks, the second half began with a POWE, as in newly eligible wide receiver Quran Powe. While he had a nice debut, it was his signal calling teammate who was one of the Week 6 standouts in a rainy edition of the HighLights. Let's begin to tip our drenched caps. Zane Dudek - Armstrong

CTK ’16: 4-A Big Nine Conference Preview
August 21, 2016
While realignment created some radically different conferences for the upcoming football season, the 4-A Big Nine bears a tremendous resemblance to the former AAA Big 10 Conference. Eight of those teams made the transition to the Big Nine, while only Yough and Elizabeth Forward moved elsewhere. In their place, Greensburg Salem, formerly of the AAA Greater Allegheny Conference, has joined the section. Thus, many of the rivalries are already in place in the section, and teams and coaches will have a high level of familiarity. A notable difference for this season, though, is that only four teams will earn playoff bids, whereas the conference produced five teams a year ago.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Jayne Oberdorf
April 12, 2016
For the better part of the past decade, the name Oberdorf has been associated with Greensburg-Salem athletics. Most recently, Claire Oberdorf was a standout for the Golden Lions, particularly on the softball diamond and the basketball court. Before Claire, though, her older sister Jayne guided Greensburg Salem to gold. Jayne, who now pitches at Marist College, is profiled for the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Jayne Oberdorf was a four-year contributor for the GS softball team, both at the plate and in the circle. As a pitcher, she compiled a sterling record of 48-8, with more than 500 career strikeouts. Her junior and senior campaigns, she was recognized as an All-State performer, as well as Player of the Year.

CTK 2015 – Class AAA Greater Allegheny Conference Preview
August 21, 2015
While West Allegheny and Central Valley have battled back and forth atop the Parkway Conference and Thomas Jefferson has reigned supreme in the former Big Nine Conference, the Greater Allegheny Conference has had a number of intriguing teams that have enjoyed success recently. Last year, Hampton captured the top spot, while perennial powerhouse Franklin Regional finished in second. Mars, a team which has been near the top of the standings in recent years, overcame key injuries to still contend and make a playoff run. Conference newcomer Gateway, which was a powerhouse for more than a decade in Quad-A, proved disappointing for most of its debut season.

PIHL Notebook – 2014-2015 Class A Preview
October 20, 2014
Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook” as we continue our comprehensive preview of the 2014-15 high school hockey season. Today we take a look at the teams vying for the Class A championship. Class A has the most complex breakdown of the new alignment, split into two tiers with two conferences in each. Tier 1 is, fittingly, the more stacked of the two. Three of last year’s final four will compete in the Western Conference, including defending champion Quaker Valley, while McDowell and Montour join from the Open Division and Class AA respectively. The Eastern Conference includes Chiefs Cup finalist Hempfield, the “other” member of last year’s Class A final four in Freeport, and another Open transplant in Gateway.
