If the WPIAL basketball quarterfinals are a party for eight, Class AAAA Section 1 has done and unusual thing and made reservations for two. It’s like Section 1 has finally stood up and said “what about us?” Hempfield and Kiski Area are Section 1 teams that have made it to the quarterfinals. It might not seem like much, but seeing two from Section 1 eating at the quarterfinal table doesn’t happen often. Since 2000, this is only the fourth time that two teams from Section 1 have made the quarterfinals and the first time since 2010. In 2007, Albert Gallatin and Norwin made the quarterfinals. Norwin and Franklin Regional made it in 2008. Kiski Area and Latrobe made it in 2010.

Franklin Reg Beats Latrobe in PIAA AAA Finals; Burrell Wins AA Consolation
February 8, 2014
The WPIAL showcased why they are so deep in AAA on Friday night, with all three PIAA qualifiers (Franklin Regional, Latrobe, North Allegheny) wrestling in the semi-finals. With Franklin Regional and Latrobe advancing to Saturday’s final, the WPIAL had its first ever all District 7 final in the PIAA tournament. The matchup was against two familiar foes, with Franklin Regional and Latrobe already wrestling each other twice over the last two weeks. In the first meeting in the Section 1 Championships, Franklin Regional beat Latrobe 46-28. In the WPIAL finals a week ago, Franklin Regional again was victorious, winning 42-19.

Franklin Regional Wins First Ever WPIAL Team Wrestling Gold
February 1, 2014
Last year Franklin Regional came one match away from winning WPIAL gold as a team. This year, they didn’t let it go down to the last match, dominating action while beating Greater Latrobe 42-19 for their first ever WPIAL team championship. The match started at 138 pounds, where Franklin Regional bumped their lineup up one weight class each from 138 to 170 pounds. The Panthers would jump out to an early 19-0 lead thanks to a fall, technical fall, and two major decisions. Greater Latrobe would fight back, registering a pair of victories, one by technical fall, to cut the lead to 19-8. But Franklin Regional would regain control, winning four of the next five matches en route to a 42-19 victory.

The weather for the WPIAL football championships Saturday is not good. The forecast is for cold, possible snow showers and winds gusting to 20 m.p.h. But for half of the four title games, the outlook looks absolutely perfect. Never mind the weather, two of the games match perfect teams – and that is a pretty unusual occurrence. Sto-Rox meets North Catholic for the WPIAL Class A title at 11 and Aliquippa takes on South Fayette for the AA championship at 5. All four teams in those games have perfect 12-0 records.

CTK 2013 – WPIAL Quad-A Foothills Conference Preview
August 13, 2013
The Foothills Conference is made up of nine schools who played a lot of young players in 2012. While that led to a competitive conference and some exciting football a year ago, it also led to an 1-6 record in the postseason with only conference champion Gateway picking up a postseason victory in the 2012 WPIAL football playoffs. There is an effort up and down the conference to shed that ‘weak link’ reputation the Foothills has when compared to the other Class AAAA conferences. In the 32-year history of WPIAL Quad-A football, Foothills Conference teams have captured gold only four times: Gateway in 1986, Connellsville in 1991, McKeesport in 1994 and only once since the turn of the century, when the Tigers won it again in 2005.

2013 WPIAL Wrestling Fabulous 14
March 27, 2013
Another great year is in the books for the 2012-2013 high school wrestling season. The WPIAL provided a lot of excitement throughout the year, but it was Canon-McMillan in Class AAA and Burrell in AA that continued to rewrite history. Canon-McMillan not only won its record fourth consecutive WPIAL Class AAA team championship, but the Big Macs also won their second straight PIAA dual meet team championship and third straight PIAA individual tournament team championship. Burrell, meanwhile, continued its dominance of Class AA, with a record seventh straight WPIAL dual meet team championship.
