Look at the list of WPIAL tennis champions over the past decade and you’ll see the name Kissell at various places on the girls side. But Chad Kissell is on the cusp of proving that this championship stuff is not just a girl thing in the Kissell family. Kissell is a senior at Latrobe High School and is the No. 1 seed for the WPIAL Class AAA boys tournament Tuesday and Wednesday. Here at MSA Sports, we like to spread the wealth when it comes to shining our spotlight. It seems some players shine for top teams each and every week. Sure, we will acknowledge their greatness, but we also like to tip our cap to those players and teams that are not steady contributors in each week to the 'W' column around the WPIAL. The Gateway Gators have finished first or second in the Foothills Conference for six consecutive seasons. Don’t look for Gateway near the top of the conference this year. That’s because Gateway is no longer in the conference. The Gators dropped from Class AAAA to AAA for this season. The Foothills Conference, though, still has nine teams. Plum was moved from the Southeastern to the Foothills. McKeesport is the defending conference champion. The Tigers lost a number of key players, but still should be in the top of the conference. WPIAL baseball champions took it on the chin three times in the first round of the PIAA playoffs Monday. But history shows WPIAL champs often have trouble in the PIAA playoffs. Take a look at past years and the statistics say that WPIAL champs have only a slightly better than 25 percent chance of making it to a PIAA title game. The PIAA championships started with one class in 1977, expanded to two classes in 1979, three classes in 1999 and four classes in 2005. Since the PIAA playoffs started in 1977 and through last year, there were 96 WPIAL champs. Only 26 of those 96 teams (27 percent) made it to a PIAA title game.

A senior and a freshman claimed the first gold of the spring on Tuesday afternoon. Pittsburgh Central Catholic senior Adam Blasinsky claimed a second consecutive championship while Sewickley Academy ninth grader Luke Ross also won in straight sets. If the WPIAL basketball quarterfinals are a party for eight, Class AAAA Section 1 has done and unusual thing and made reservations for two. It’s like Section 1 has finally stood up and said “what about us?” Hempfield and Kiski Area are Section 1 teams that have made it to the quarterfinals. It might not seem like much, but seeing two from Section 1 eating at the quarterfinal table doesn’t happen often. Since 2000, this is only the fourth time that two teams from Section 1 have made the quarterfinals and the first time since 2010. In 2007, Albert Gallatin and Norwin made the quarterfinals. The WPIAL showcased why they are so deep in AAA on Friday night, with all three PIAA qualifiers (Franklin Regional, Latrobe, North Allegheny) wrestling in the semi-finals. With Franklin Regional and Latrobe advancing to Saturday’s final, the WPIAL had its first ever all District 7 final in the PIAA tournament. The matchup was against two familiar foes, with Franklin Regional and Latrobe already wrestling each other twice over the last two weeks. In the first meeting in the Section 1 Championships, Franklin Regional beat Latrobe 46-28. In the WPIAL finals a week ago, Franklin Regional again was victorious, winning 42-19.
Franklin Regional Wins First Ever WPIAL Team Wrestling Gold

Last year Franklin Regional came one match away from winning WPIAL gold as a team. This year, they didn’t let it go down to the last match, dominating action while beating Greater Latrobe 42-19 for their first ever WPIAL team championship. The match started at 138 pounds, where Franklin Regional bumped their lineup up one weight class each from 138 to 170 pounds. The Panthers would jump out to an early 19-0 lead thanks to a fall, technical fall, and two major decisions. Greater Latrobe would fight back, registering a pair of victories, one by technical fall, to cut the lead to 19-8. But Franklin Regional would regain control, winning four of the next five matches en route to a 42-19 victory.Scholastic Notebook – 11/22/2013

The weather for the WPIAL football championships Saturday is not good. The forecast is for cold, possible snow showers and winds gusting to 20 m.p.h. But for half of the four title games, the outlook looks absolutely perfect. Never mind the weather, two of the games match perfect teams – and that is a pretty unusual occurrence. Sto-Rox meets North Catholic for the WPIAL Class A title at 11 and Aliquippa takes on South Fayette for the AA championship at 5. All four teams in those games have perfect 12-0 records.
