MSA Sports 2017 Girls All-Netters
March 31, 2017
There are more than 8,000 reasons to like the players on the first team of this year’s MSA All Netters girls all-star team. That’s how many points the five players have scored in their careers. The All Netters team is selected by the MSA Sports staff and takes into consideration all players in the WPIAL. This year’s first team consists of three seniors and two juniors, and the three seniors are all headed to Division I colleges. And all five were big scorers. One of the seniors is among the top 10 scorers in WPIAL history. Here is a look at the first- and second-team selections on the All Netters team, as well as the Player of the Year. FIRST TEAM: PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Coaches Corner – Molly Rottman
March 21, 2017
In this feature titled “Coach’s Corner”, I will be interviewing a different coach every week and asking them questions about their personal life and about coaching. Hopefully their answers will not only shed some light on how they coach their respective teams, but also allow readers to get to know the men behind the fields/courts. This week features Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s girls basketball head coach Molly Rottmann. Coach Rottmann is in her 19th year as the head coach of the Trojanettes, with over 380 wins, 5 WPIAL titles, and one PIAA crown. She is a graduate of CWNC, and played under WPIAL legend Don Barth. Let’s take a look inside Coach Rottmann’s corner: Personal:

It doesn’t take an analytics whiz to figure out that 3-point shooting has become a big part of high school basketball. But if one can deduce anything from the WPIAL championships over the past three days, it is this: While accuracy from 3-point range might be nice, the biggest factor in winning a championship is to hit the boards. Look at the statistics from the 12 boys and girls championships (six in each classification) Thursday through Saturday and rebounding was by far the biggest key and not shooting. Here is what the statistics showed:

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic Knocks Off Lincoln Park to Repeat
March 2, 2017
Two teams with nearly identical overall records and two completely different styles of play were on full display Saturday night in the WPIAL Class 3-A boys championship game at Petersen Events Center. In a back and forth contest that saw Lincoln Park race up and down the court and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic stick to a slower more methodical game, the Trojans slowed down the potent Leopards offense and won back to back Class A championships with a 56-51 win in the 3-A title game. Feels a lot different; we did it without size" said senior Kenny Fukon, who plays alongside his from John, one of the leading scorers for Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. John finished with 16 points to lead the Trojans.

It’s unusual for the Canon-McMillan boys basketball team to still be playing in late February. It is certainly a fun time for the Big Macs. For the Bell family, it’s twice as nice. Canon-McMillan’s coach is Rick Bell. His son, R.J., is a 6-foot-4 senior guard who has played a big role in getting the Big Macs to the WPIAL 6A quarterfinals. They play No. 1 seed Pine-Richland Saturday. The younger Bell had six 3-pointers in a first round victory against North Allegheny. R.J. is averaging in double figures. The victory against North Allegheny was only the third playoff win in school history for Canon-McMillan. The others were in 1996 and 2008. This is only the ninth time the Big Macs have been to the postseason.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Lauren Wolosik
February 13, 2017
While injuries are an unfortunate reality in sports, an athlete suffering two severe injuries is extremely rare, and often devastating. Lauren Wolosik has not been deterred, however, by two season-ending injuries in a three-year span. In the midst of a stellar basketball season at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Wolosik, a former champion at North Catholic, is this week's feature. Wolosik enjoyed incredible success during her time at North Catholic. She and the Trojanettes appeared in three straight WPIAL championship games, beginning in her freshman year in 2009-10.

No one knew much about Najhier West before the PIAA Class 2A championship Saturday morning. But only hours after the game, West was being talked about on national television and his running ability put him right up there with some well-known athletes on a college and pro level. West is a junior running back at Steel Valley, the backup halfback to DeWayne Murray. But Murray wasn’t at full strength and didn’t play all that much in the title game against Southern Columbia at Hersheypark Stadium. It might have been a big deal because West is the sixth-leading rusher in WPIAL history. But Steel Valley simply went West.

Sewickley Beats CWNC in Overtime for WPIAL 1-A Boys Crown
November 5, 2016
For the sixth time in program history, the Sewickley Academy Panthers took home the WPIAL Championship after tonight’s 1-0 overtime victory against the Trojans of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the 1A Boy’s Soccer Championship Game. In a game that was very defensive, it saw just four total shot opportunities in the first half, three by the Trojans and one by the Panthers. Two of those three shots by the Trojans were on net. The second half saw more of the same, until around 15 minutes left when the Panthers pushed on the accelerator, however, they just couldn’t get a shot past the Trojans and the game would remain tied after regulation, 0-0.

Big Game Hunting for Week Eight 2016
October 19, 2016
Week eight brings with it the answer to a question put forth here back in week one. How will I personally feel about the change to six classifications after seeing it for a season? The answer now, is the same as it was for me at first blush. I hate it, hate it with the fiery passion of 1000 suns, not to put too fine a point on it. It does nothing to accomplish any of the goals it portends to. It is going to exclude some very good teams, possibly great teams from the playoffs and include some very bad teams. Not to mention we are only in week eight and little is left that matters in terms of games of import in the largest classification. Nonetheless, we are nothing if not intrepid here at BGH, so let’s go Big Game Hunting!

South Side Rams Hometown Volleyball Broadcast Recap – 10/12/2016
October 12, 2016
The Lady Rams of South Side battled hard and hung tough against the visiting Trojanettes of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, but fell short 3-1 (25-14, 24-26, 25-13, 25-16) in a Class 2A Section 2 clash. South Side jumped to an early lead in the opening set. Sophomore Rachel Pieto's back-to-back aces to start the match gave the Lady Rams the early momentum. CWNC would battle back with their own success from the service line. The Trojanettes recorded six of their 18 service aces in the first set, four coming from Sammy Robb, and took the opening stanza 25-14.
