WPIAL baseball playoffs roundup for May 22: Brownsville upsets No. 1 Riverside

The Brownsville baseball team is ready to party like its 1999.

Rocco Frisco had two RBIs, and Brody Bagwell, DJ Zimcosky and Colton Dellarose all had two hits as No. 4 Brownsville defeated No. 1 Riverside, 6-5, in a WPIAL Class 3A semifinal at Washington & Jefferson's Ross Memorial Park.

The Falcons (13-2) advanced to the championship game for the first time since 1999 and will play No. 2 Avonworth next week at Wild Things Park.

Drew Speicher had two RBIs for No. 1 Riverside (16-2), the two-time defending WPIAL champion. Riverside will play South Side Beaver in the consolation game.

Avonworth 13, South Side Beaver 2 (6 inn.) — Winning pitcher Ryan Felter was 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, and Jax Miller was 2 for 4 with four RBIs to lift No. 2 Avonworth (17-4) to a WPIAL Class 3A semifinal win at Washington & Jefferson. Jacob Jaillet was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Lopes.

Class 6A

North Allegheny 3, Bethel Park 1 — Luke Trueman threw a four-hitter with six strikeouts as No. 10 North Allegheny (12-9) won a WPIAL Class 6A quarterfinal at Boyce-Mayview Park. C.J. Weller and Trueman each had RBIs for the Tigers, who will play Hempfield in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Boyce-Mayview.

Justin Meis took the loss despite striking out 16 batters for No. 2 Bethel Park (17-4).

Class 5A

Mars 6, Laurel Highlands 2 — Mitchell Schultz hit a three-run home run, and Anthony Michalski was 2 for 3 as No. 5 Mars (14-5) won a WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinal at West Mifflin. Jon Wetherhold also doubled home a run for the Planets. Frank Craska scattered seven hits with six strikeouts to earn the win.

Mason McManus homered for No. 4 Laurel Highlands (16-4).

Class 4A

South Fayette 1, Hopewell 0 — Nolan Lutz drove in the only run of the game with a double in the second inning to give No. 3 South Fayette (16-5) a WPIAL Class 4A semifinal victory at Burkett Complex. Tyler Bedillion threw a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts.

Class 2A

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 9, Neshannock 2 — Luc Madonna was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Robby Randolph was 2 for 3 with three RBIs as No. 2 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (17-5) won a WPIAL Class 2A semifinal at Burkett Complex. Joe Alampi threw a five-hitter with seven strikeouts to earn the win.
