Sixteen teams saw their dreams of WPIAL football gold and a trip to the North Show come to an end as they were forced to exit the Highway to Heinz on Quarterfinals Friday. That leaves 16 teams still in the hunt for a gridiron title thanks in large part to these following outstanding performances on a comfortable early November eve. One defending WPIAL champion cruised, one needed overtime for a dramatic come-from-behind win while another was ousted in Round Two. There is no truth to the rumor that the section formally known as the Big Seven Conference in Class AAA was considering a name change to the Big One Conference. The run of three straight WPIAL and two consecutive PIAA state championships came to an end for Thomas Jefferson, which saw their title hopes dashed in the Semifinals by eventual champion West Allegheny.
