Welcome to Week 1 of the high school football season. The offseason passed by rather quickly for Chick’s Picks. Shortly after last season’s championship games, she began training to run her first 5K. This, after rehabbing from ankle surgery, Chick’s Picks thought would be a lofty goal to set for herself.That chilly March morning arrived, and accomplish that goal she did. It certainly was not pretty, but nonetheless, Chick’s Picks crossed the finish line. When the new Class AAAA football alignment was announced back in January, more than a few heads were being scratched when folks starting looking at "Section 2". The conference was made up of the six teams from the old Great Southern Conference along with three teams from the Big East. Six schools from southern Allegheny County and northern Washington County joined by three teams right in the heart of eastern Allegheny County.Anybody who has tried going from East to South or vice-versa, yet alone during rush-hour on a Friday, knows there is no easy commute. However while the travel aspect of this new conference will be a pain, the football aspect should be a thrill.WPIAL Hall of Fame Class of 2012

Neil Walker is known for his baseball talent. The current Pirates second baseman had an unforgettable baseball career at Pine-Richland High School and was a first-round draft pick. But it is what Walker also did in other sports that helped earn him a spot in the WPIAL Hall of Fame. The WPIAL Hall of Fame class for 2012 was announced Thursday at a news conference, and Walker was one of the selections. Walker was in Los Angeles with the Pirates, but his father was at the news conference at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District. Walker had a terrific baseball career at Pine-Richland, starting four seasons and batting .504 for his career. He hit .657 as a senior with 13 home runs, 42 RBIs and a 1.403 slugging percentage for a WPIAL championship team.
