Jeannette and Greensburg Central Catholic have been the dominant teams in the Interstate Conference over the past decade. Nine times in the past 10 years one of the teams has either won or tied for the conference title. But this could be the year that some new blood flows to the top of the conference. Jeannette is still expected to be strong, but Greensburg Central Catholic might drop a little. Coach Muzzy Colosimo stepped down as coach shortly before the start of preseason practices. Washington and Mount Pleasant could make some noise this year and challenge for the conference title. As for the make-up of the conference, there are only two changes. East Allegheny moved out, and Washington moved in.
London Bound: Local Athletes on the US Olympic Team – Coleman Scott

Former three-time PIAA state champion and Waynesburg high school graduate Coleman Scott has made the US Olympic Wrestling team as a freestyle wrestler. Scott, an NCAA Champion in 2008, was the final man to make the Olympic squad after defeating top ranked Shawn Bunch and Reece Humphrey in a wrestle off. Scott has been a member of the US National team since 2009. He was a four time All American at Oklahoma State and one of two Western Pennsylvanians to make the 2012 Olympic team. Joe Dunn was known as one of the good guys among WPIAL basketball coaches. But that fraternity is now minus one good guy. Dunn resigned as Trinity High School’s boys coach last week. He wouldn’t rule out returning to coaching someday, but for now, he wants to spend more time with his family. Dunn and his wife have two daughters and a son. Dunn has been coaching for 26 years and had other successful coaching stints at Mount Pleasant and Seton-LaSalle. Dunn became pretty good at taking down programs and turning them into more than respectable. He did it at Mount Pleasant and he did it at Trinity, where he was coach since 2001.2012 PIAA Track & Field – Day Two Recap

At every invitational and championship meet this spring, South Park’s Bill Stanley has set a meet record in the javelin. But Stanley did a lot more than set a meet record today. Stanley is now a national record holder. Stanley, a senior, won the Class AAA javelin title at Shippensburg University and set a national record with a throw of 246 feet, 9 inches. Stanley’s throw, which came on his first of the competition, beat the old record of 244-2, set in 2010 by Sam Crouser of Gresham, Ore. The national record is recognized by the National Federation of High School Associations. The first day of the PIAA track and field championships is complete, and only one WPIAL athlete stepped up to the very top of the winners stand. Waynesburg’s Marissa Kalsey won the Class AA pole vault championship at Shippensburg University Friday. She was the only WPIAL athlete to win a gold medal on the first day of the two-day meet. The first day includes finals in only half of the field events. Running events have only preliminary heats.
