It is funny isn’t it? How every year near then end of summer the smell of freshly cut grass just starts to smell like football? Doesn’t smell like that in the springtime. I wonder how that works. I am glad it works that way, and I am delighted that it is time to crank up the Big Game Hunting for another WPIAL football season! The first of 16 Big Game Huntings is always determined by the four defending WPIAL champions. While repeats have been the story in the WPIAL in the last few years with Clairton winning five consecutive Class A titles, two straight Class AA titles for Aliquippa and three straight titles for North Allegheny in Quad A, there have been no repeat champion in Class AAA.However, a team from the Parkway Conference has claimed the last four AAA trophies, with West Allegheny as the defending champion. In fact, five of the nine coaches in the conference has won a WPIAL championship, those coaches have combined for 13 gold medals for their teams since 1991.WPIAL Softball Consolation Recaps

Eight teams had to wait an extra 24 hours to see if their season would continue after the WPIAL postponed all four softball consolation games from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon. For Hempfield, West Allegheny, Chartiers-Houston and Burgettstown, it was worth the wait as they picked up victories and now move on to the PIAA state softball playoffs while Peters Township, West Mifflin, Beaver and Frazier see their successful 2013 campaign come to an end.WPIAL Class AAA and Class AA Baseball Consolation Recaps
With a PIAA state playoff berth at stake, both the Class AAA and Class AA WPIAL consolation baseball games were thrillers all the way down to the final at bat. The West ended up going 3-1 against the East in the PIAA football championships in 2012. The Clairton Bears finished off a third straight 16-0 season with a fourth consecutive PIAA Class A state football championship. The win extends the longest high school football winning streak in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania to 63 in a row. Erie Cathedral Prep won the Class AAA state title while North Allegheny made it two Class AAAA state crowns in the last three years. Only Aliquippa came up three points short of a clean sweep for the WPIAL and Western Pa. Here are ALL of the final results form the 2012 PIAA Football Playoffs.
