We live for the Highway to Heinz at Big Game Hunting. A short week of preparation for a do or die game puts coaches, players and yes, broadcasters to the test. But the accepting the challenge is enough!

Chicks Picks – Week Seven – 2014
October 9, 2014
Welcome to Week 7 of the high school football season. Part of being a successful high school football prognosticator is always knowing what your competition is up to.  While studying season statistics of those very rivals, Chick’s Picks noticed a few thing that were rather bothersome.  She decided to schedule a meeting with The Boss to air her frustrations. “Boss, I want to start off by saying that I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me over the last 15 years.  But, this week, I noticed that my biggest rivals are spreading their wings, so to speak,” Chick’s Picks said. The Boss replied, without looking up from his classic hunt and peck typing technique, “Chick’s, what is it that you want now?”

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for 10/3
October 4, 2014
While forecasts for stormy weather fortunately were off, some of the performances on the first wet Friday of the 2014 campaign were spot on terrific. While one super star put his name on top of two district passing records, another made a big announcement on where his future splash plays will take place before going out and enjoying another big night. On a cloudy evening, the stars were shining bright as we check out the best of the best on the first Friday night of WPIAL football in October. Jordan Whitehead - Central Valley

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for 9/26
September 27, 2014
We hit the midway point of the 2014 WPIAL football regular season with points a plenty. Offenses around the district continue to amass record setting numbers with good solid defenses creeping closer to the endangered species list. Friday night saw 12 teams score over 50 points and five of those teams eclipsed the 60 point plateau. And that doesn't even include the traditional 70+ point total for Clairton. With those mind-numbing numbers, here are some of the top performers from the Fifth Friday of the season. Connor Slomka - Pine-Richland

Chicks Picks – Week Four – 2014
September 18, 2014
Welcome to Week 4 of the high school football season.  Throughout the first two weeks of the season, Chick’s Picks had seen remarkable scores posted by Clairton—70-0 over California and 86-0 over Wilkinsburg.  Despite heavy criticism from the peanut gallery that the Bears were running up the score, opposing coaches did not seem to share that opinion.  So, Chick’s Picks decided to head out to Westmoreland County last Friday night to bear witness as Clairton took on Greensburg Central Catholic.

WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Four – 09/17/2014
September 17, 2014
One third of the way into the 2014 season and the field is taking shape quite nicely, we have some traditional powers and some new kids on the block. Most satisfying for us here at BGH, there never seems to be any shortage of Big Games to choose from on a given weekend. Kudos to the WPIAL football steering committee for their expertise and vision. Just as there is no shortage of Big Games there seems to also be no shortage of articles calling themselves Big Game Hunting. You would do well for yourself to stick here with the original and, best I can tell, the only one that features an actual article on the games when you click on the link. Minor detail, maybe to some, but it feels like a big deal to us.

CTK ’14: WPIAL AAA Big Nine Conference Preview
August 16, 2014
The WPIAL realigned football conferences for this season, but the Big Nine stayed absolutely the same. Look for the conference race to stay the same as it has for a number of years. In other words, look for Thomas Jefferson on top. Thomas Jefferson has won or tied for the conference title eight consecutive seasons. The last time a team other than Thomas Jefferson won the title outright was West Mifflin in 2005. Many project Thomas Jefferson as the team to beat. Ringgold could challenge, though. A few teams have new coaches this season. Here is a look at all of the teams in the Big Nine: ALBERT GALLATIN COLONIALS

2014 MSA Sports Diamond Studs Baseball All-Star Team
June 18, 2014
Blackhawk’s Brendan McKay and Norwin’s J.J. Matijevic were history makers. They did things this baseball season that hadn’t ever been done in the WPIAL before. McKay and Matijevic were so dominant and so terrific that the MSA Sports staff had trouble separating the two for Player of the Year honors. So, MSA decided to do a rare thing. They picked McKay and Matijevic as co-Player of the Year. McKay and Matijevic lead MSA’s Diamond Studs team, which is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL. The team is heavy with pitchers, but some of the pitchers also excelled in the field and as hitters. Here is a look at the MSA Sports Diamond Studs team as well as the co-Player of the Year. 2014 MSA Sports Diamond Dolls Softball All-Star Team
It doesn’t matter whether it was in the biggest classification of the WPIAL, or the smallest. There was an abundance of talent in district softball this season, evidenced by the MSA Sports Diamond Dolls all-star team. The Diamond Dolls team is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL and is picked by the MSA Sports staff. This is one of the most balanced Diamond Dolls teams, in terms of talent spread out over all four classifications. Two of the players are from Class AAAA, two from Class AAA, two from Class AA and four from Class A. Seven of the 10 players were in WPIAL title games. Here is a look at the MSA Sports Diamond Dolls team as well as the Player of the Year. PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Scholastic Notebook – 05/02/2014
May 2, 2014
There are multi-sport athletes in the WPIAL who compete in more highly-visible sports than North Hills’ Noah Bostick. But as far as the number of sports and excelling in them, Bostick has few peers. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say Bostick is most one of the best all-around athletes in the WPIAL. He is a young man for all seasons – and then some. You don’t see many three-sport athletes these days at large schools. But Bostick is more than a three-sport athlete. He actually competes in four sports, and does well in all of them.
