Trib HSSN boys basketball player of the week: Jay Wrona

School: Mohawk

Class: Senior

Height: 5-foot-10

Position: Guard

What coach says: “His point production stood out in both of those games,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “What we needed the most was his ability to defend. He has the quickest hands of anyone I have ever coached, and he has the ability to get his hands on the basketball defensively. When he is doing that is when we are at our best.

“I don’t think it ever had anything to do with football. I think as a team, we just got off to a slower start because we challenged them with a more difficult schedule this year, and through that, if forced us to find ourselves. His numbers may have been down early due to the rise of some of the other players and their improvement. Jay leads our team in assists as well and is very unselfish at finding the open guy.

“Jay is really playing well at the right time for us. If he and the rest of our guys continue to play well on both ends of the floor, we will hopefully be a tough out come playoff time.”

#Earned: Wrona is just starting to find his groove on the hardwood after his football season as quarterback of the Warriors ended in the district semifinals a day before the official start of basketball practice. Last Tuesday, the senior guard scored a game-high 27 points as Mohawk won a battle for first place in Section 1-3A against host Neshannock, 64-52. Two nights later, Wrona led the way with 20 points as the Warriors picked up their seventh straight victory in a 61-50 nonsection win at Shenango.

Background: Wrona is winding down an incredible scholastic career at Mohawk in which he has starred in three sports. In basketball this season, following a slow start, he is averaging more than 16 points per game, after averaging 16.7 points as a junior. In football, he led the Warriors to the 2A semifinals by connecting on 132 of 226 passes for 2,160 yards and 34 touchdowns. In baseball last spring, he batted .528 and was a first-team all-section infielder.
