En route to their first victory in two years, the West used a big second inning to capture a 4-2 nail-biter against the East All-Stars at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington, Pa and here on MSA Sports on Wednesday.

The game featured outstanding pitching by both teams and an electrifying finish line that saw the East nearly rally to win the mid-summer classic.

In the top of the second frame, Tuesday night’s home run derby champion and Schaumburg Boomers Steve McQuail scored on a fielder’s choice from teammate Michael Valadez. Outfielder Sean Mahley also of the Boomers tripled to add two more runs for the West, scoring Valadez and Schwartz to give the West a 3-0 advantage.

However, the West hadn’t won just yet as the East All-Stars threatened scoring a pair of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Evansville Otters center fielder John Schultz singled scoring Geraldo Avila, of Southern Illinois, to put their first run on the scoreboard. After a walk to Traverse City Beach Bum and home run derby runner-up Chase Burch, Max Casper representing the Crushers drove him in with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one.

The West tallied another run in the seventh when Gateway Grizzlies catcher Landon Hernandez smacked an RBI double to score River City Rascals outfielder Curran Redal who previously walked.

Tim Brown, who is 7-2 on the year earned the win for the West throwing one inning of one hit ball with one strikeout. Pitcher Rich Barrett of the Gateway Grizzlies earned the save while Matt Rein, Lake Erie Crushers, was handed the loss.

The Alex Gamez MVP Award went to Sean Mahley, a two-time All-Star, of the Boomers whose triple sealed the victory for the West All-Stars
