Local softball fans will get a treat Wednesday if they make a trip to Monroeville. There will be a playoff tripleheader at Gateway.

Penn-Trafford will play Thomas Jefferson at 3 p.m. in one WPIAL 5A semifinal, followed by Hempfield and Norwin at 5 in a 6A semifinals, and Latrobe faces Thomas Jefferson at 7 in the other 5A semifinal.

Crosby offered

Greensburg Central Catholic football player Samir Crosby is just a sophomore, but he already had four NCAA Division I scholarship offers.

Crosby, who has played a number of positions for GCC, including receiver, quarterback and defensive back, was offered by Fordham, an FCS program that competes in the Patriot League.

Buffalo, Miami of Ohio and UNLV also have made him offers.

Leonard hired

It didn’t take Anna Leonard long to find another team.

After resigning as the girls basketball coach at Jeannette after two seasons, Leonard was named head girls coach at McKeesport.

An experienced AAU coach, Leonard makes the jump from 2A to 5A and takes over for Matt Miller, who guided the Tigers last season after the turbulent departure of Amy Gumbert.

Gumbert resigned halfway through the season, and Miller, the school’s head football coach, took over as acting coach.

McKeesport went 24-5 and reached the WPIAL and PIAA semifinals.

Leonard was 10-30 at Jeannette while dealing with low roster numbers. Last season, the team had to finish a game with three players and had a tough time maintaining a five-girl roster.

Recruiting

A number of Belle Vernon senior athletes signed with colleges.

They included football players Adam LaCarte (John Carroll) and Willie Schwerha (Delaware State), swimmer Marty Maley (Lock Haven) and track and cross country athletes Tessa Rodriguez (Robert Morris), Lily Shahan (John Carroll) and Ryan White (Seton Hill).

• Two Mt. Pleasant senior athletes made college commitments.

Gregory Shawulis will wrestle at Seton Hill, and Allison Tepper plans to play golf at The Citadel.

Southmoreland baseball player David Billheimer committed to Penn State Fayette. He is an infielder/pitcher.
