Happy Valentine’s Day!

While the WPIAL basketball playoffs begin with one game Thursday and 23 more on Friday, the City League postseason tips off Wednesday with the District 8 semifinals.

It has been another dominating winter for the Allderdice boys basketball team.

The Dragons were perfect in district play with a 10-0 regular season.

Allderdice was the only boys basketball team in the city to finish with an overall record of over .500, ending up 18-4. The Dragons’ only losses were to Gateway, Baldwin, McDowell and Hampton.

The Dragons are trying to win their third straight City League boys basketball crown, and their seventh championship in the last nine years.

On Wednesday, they host Carrick (4-6, 9-13), a team they defeated twice this season by scores of 79-50 and 72-31.

The other City League semifinal has Brashear (6-4, 9-10) visiting Obama Academy (8-2, 9-11).

The Eagles beat the Bulls in both of their regular season meetings, winning at Brashear, 68-51, and at home last week, 61-38.

Both boys semifinals games tip off at 5:30 p.m.

City girls hoops final four

The Obama Academy (9-1, 11-8) girls basketball team hopes to begin its journey toward a third straight City League championship in a semifinal home game Wednesday.

Obama is set to host former district power Westinghouse (6-4, 10-9).

The Eagles rolled to double-digit wins in both of the regular season meetings, beating the Bulldogs on the road 53-27 and at home last week, 50-25.

The other district final four contest features last year’s runner-up, Allderdice (9-1, 12-9), hosting Brashear (4-6, 11-10).

Allderdice finished as co-champion in the regular season with Obama Academy.

The Dragons swept the Bulls in the regular season, cruising at home 55-24 and winning big at Brashear, 74-29.

The two girls semifinals begin at 7 p.m.
