Last year, four South Hills rivals qualified for the WPIAL Class 4A girls soccer playoffs.

Those same four schools sit stop the Section 2-4A standings midway through September.

On Wednesday, those four schools square off when Bethel Park visits Upper St. Clair and Mt. Lebanon hosts Peters Township.

The perfect Panthers sit alone in first place with a 4-0 section record and 6-0 overall. In its six victories, USC has outscored its opponents 42-0.

The visiting Black Hawks are tied with Mt. Lebanon for third place with a 3-2 section record and an overall mark of 4-2-1.

The Indians and Blue Devils were the top two teams in the section a year ago.

Peters Township is a half-game behind USC for first place this fall with a 3-0-1 section record, 5-0-1 overall. The Indians have outscored their opponents 24-1 in six games.

Mt. Lebanon has won five of seven overall and is 3-2 in section action.

More top four battles

Another section where the top four girls soccer teams go head to head Wednesday is Section 4-2A.

South Park (4-1) and Keystone Oaks (4-2) are both 2-0 atop the section, one game ahead of Shady Side Academy (3-2) and McGuffey (2-2), which are 1-1 in section matches.

On Wednesday, the Eagles visit the Highlanders while the Golden Eagles are on the road to battle the Bulldogs.

Three other girls soccer matches of note Wednesday:

Laurel Highlands (3-1, 4-2) visits Elizabeth Forward (3-0, 3-1) in Section 2-3A. EF is tied for first place with Thomas Jefferson.

Latrobe (2-1, 3-1) hosts Franklin Regional (3-0, 5-1). FR is tied for first place in Section 3-3A with Plum while Latrobe is even with Penn-Trafford, a game out of the top spot.

Winchester Thurston (2-0, 2-0) travels to Ellis School (2-0, 3-1) in a fight for first place in Section 4-A.

Repeating on the links

The Freeport boys golf team won the Section 1-2A title last year.

A win Wednesday over Knoch will give Freeport back-to-back section crowns.

The Yellowjackets are 8-0 in section play, one match ahead of the 7-1 Knights.

Freeport defeated Knoch in their first meeting Aug. 24.

The match will take place at the Butler Country Club at 3:30 p.m.
