Pitt already was firmly on Caden Sivrich’s radar as a possible college landing spot.

His mom, Fran Sivrich, is a university employee, meaning he can get a free education there.

That was half the battle for the Norwin baseball pitcher, who had Division I college aspirations since he was a T-baller.

The other half was getting Pitt to offer him a spot on the team.

That happened recently, so Sivrich quickly made a verbal commitment to pitch in Oakland.

“I felt that I have my best opportunity to make an impact there and have a chance to grow as a player,” the right-hander said. “Also, it’s close to home and I love the coaching staff and everything that they are about.”

Sivrich also had offers to play at Georgia State and Maryland Baltimore County.

“My biggest goal is to try and make the biggest impact as possible,” he said. “I want to help the team win in any way possible, and ultimately win a championship.”

Sivrich went 2-1 with an impressive 0.83 ERA, 26 strikeouts and a 1.18 WHIP in 25 1/3 innings for Norwin, which reached the WPIAL Class 6A championship game and finished 14-9.

“It’s nice Caden is able to go to Pitt,” Norwin coach Craig Spisak said. “Close to home makes it nice for his family and friends to see him play. Caden has worked very hard to put himself in this position. It is well deserved.”

Sivrich said one of his favorite Norwin players to watch was pitcher Noah Czajkowski, who will be a senior pitcher at Pitt next season.

Czajkowski, who spent two seasons at St. Bonaventure, was 2-0 with a 6.23 ERA in 14 appearances last season for the Panthers.

“(Czajkowski) is such a competitor on the mound and he has a great work ethic,” Sivrich said.
