WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships – Day One Recap

Burrell came into the AA individual WPIAL Championships with the most representatives in the tournament with a wrestler in all 14 weight classes and through the first day, the Buccaneers have not disappointed. Burrell advanced all 14 wrestlers into the second day with a leading 8 wrestlers advancing to the semi-finals. Making the semi-finals for the Buccaneers were John Andrejcik (132), Damon Greenwald (138), Corey Falleroni (145), Steven Edwards (152), Derrick Beattie (160), Nick Pattock (170), Robert Scherer (195), and Allan Beattie (285).

Not far behind was Jefferson-Morgan, who were led by 6 wrestlers advancing to the semi-finals. The Rockets had Brendan Howard (113), John Demaske (126), Jason Miller (138), Ryan Zalar (160), Bill Bowlen (170), and Ian Wolfe (285) all advance in the winners bracket. All 9 wrestlers Jefferson-Morgan brought to the tournament are still alive for day two.

Three teams advanced 4 wrestlers to the semi-finals, including Avella, South Fayette, and Southmoreland. Four other teams advanced 3 wrestlers into the semi-finals: Bentworth, Mount Pleasant, South Park, and Yough.

All 14 number one seeds advanced to Saturday’s semi-finals while 13 of the 14 number two seeds advanced, with the lone exception coming at 182 pounds. There number two seed Freddie McKissick of Carlynton lost in overtime, 3-1, to Keystone Oaks’ Jake Walker.

Wrestling gets underway at 9:30 AM with the semi-finals scheduled for 11:30 AM. The consolation finals are scheduled for 5:00 PM with the finals set for 7:00 PM. All the mat action can be heard here on the MSA Sports Network.
