WPIAL releases boys volleyball playoff brackets

The WPIAL released its Class AAA and AA boys volleyball playoff brackets Monday morning, and North Allegheny and Derry are the No. 1 seeds, respectively.
The top four seeds in Class AAA and the top three in AA receive byes into the quarterfinals.
In Class AAA, Bethel Park is the No. 2 seed, followed by Penn-Trafford at No. 3 and Butler at No. 4.
Ambridge is the No. 2 seed in Class AA, while Deer Lakes is No. 3. The quarterfinals games for both classifications are Thursday at sites and times to be determined.
It is quick turnaround for teams as the first round will be Tuesday evening at several locations.
In the Class AAA first round, No. 8 Baldwin takes on No. 9 Shaler at 7:30 p.m. at North Allegheny, No. 5 Norwin hosts No. 12 Upper St. Clair at 7:30, No. 7 Hempfield faces No. 10 Canon McMillan at Norwin at 6, and No. 6 Seneca Valley hosts No. 11 Latrobe at 7:30.
First-round matches in Class AA will have No. 8 Trinity and No. 9 Bishop Canevin playing at 6 at North Allegheny, No. 4 Montour hosting No. 13 Mars at 7:30 p.m., No. 5 Seton LaSalle hosting No. 12 Obama at 7, No. 7 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic taking on No. 10 Keystone Oaks at Seneca Valley at 6, and No. 6 Beaver County Christian playing No. 11 Thomas Jefferson at 6 at Montour.
All four semifinal contests will be May 22, with the championship matches at Baldwin High School on May 24.
Consolation matches will involve the losing teams from the semifinals, as the top three teams from both WPIAL tournaments qualify for the PIAA championships.
North Allegheny is the defending Class AAA champion. The Tigers have won nine of the past 11 Class AAA titles. Fox Chapel (2015) and Penn-Trafford (2016) broke up that run.
Beaver County Christian, the No. 6 seed, has won the past two Class AA titles. Ambridge captured seven WPIAL championships from 2008 to 2015, while Deer Lakes triumphed in 2011.
