WPIAL Softball Playoff Recaps for Tuesday, May 24th

The focus was on Class AAA and Class AA Tuesday, the second day of the WPIAL Softball Quarterfinals. The top four seeds in Class AAA have survived to make it to the Final Four while seeds two through five have all been eliminated in the Class AA field. Here are recaps from all eight second round games on Tuesday afternoon, all heard here on the MSA Sports Network.

WPIAL CLASS AAA QUARTERFINALS:

Montour Spartans 4 – Ellwood City Wolverines 2
The defending WPIAL AAA Champions continued their quest for a repeat as the top-seeded Montour Spartans eliminated the eighth-seeded Ellwood City Wolverines 4-2 at North Allegheny High School. Montour got on the board first when Stacey Capp, who reached base on an error, would score on a RBI sacrifice bunt by Kaitlyn Kutchman, making it 1-0 Spartans after one inning of play. However, Ellwood City would answer in the third, as Christina Perota would walk and then score on an RBI base hit by Lisa Giancola. Francesca Nardone, who forced Perota into scoring position with a single, would then score on a RBI base hit by Sam Santillo, making it 2-1 Wolverines after three innings. Montour would answer though, as Stacey Capp would hit a one-out triple and then score on an RBi base hit by Tyler Minear, her first of two RBIs of the day, tying the game at 2-2. Marina Scarantino would then triple to start the bottom of the fourth and score on an RBI base hit by Paige Deley, pushing the lead to 3-2. Then, Tori Roman, who reached on a fielders choice, would score on the second of Minears RBI base hits, making it 4-2 Montour. That is where the score would stay as Kutchman, who was roughed up on the mound in the third inning, would allow only one Ellwood City hit through the final four innings. She would pitch all seven innings for the Spartans and strike out seven along the way, while tossing a four-hitter. The Spartans, now 13-3, move into the AAA semifinals, where they will face fourth-seeded Yough on Thursday. Kara Sainato would pitch six innings and surrender four runs, but only two earned for
