Week three of WPIAL football saw, quite possibly, the game of the year. So it’s no surprise that the top game also featured the top play. Beyond that, we had a game-winning touchdown pass, a game-clinching interception and a pick-six that went coast to coast. Week four is just around the corner, so don’t waste any time listening to the Plays of the Week!

1. Apollo-Ridge 44, Kittanning 41 (OT)

In a back-and-forth A-K Valley battle for the ages, Apollo-Ridge edged Kittanning 44-41 in overtime, birthing a new rivalry in AA. The Vikings and Wildcats battled in a shootout for 48 minutes but, at the end, no winner was determined. So the two teams went to overtime. After Kittanning kicker Tyler Fries hit a 26-yard field goal on Kittanning’s first possession, the opportunity arose for the Apollo-Ridge’s sophomore sensation Duane Brown to make a massive mark on this young season. Brown took a direct snap and burst through a hole, going up the middle and into the endzone for the game-winning score. Brown finished with 193 yards and four touchdowns, while teammate and Pitt recruit Tre Tipton picked up 304 yards on the ground and added another score for the undefeated Vikings.

MSA Sports’ Greg Warnock and Brandon Showers on the call.

2. Bethel Park 21, Upper St. Clair 14

Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair have had some major, intense battles over the years. Most of the time the games are close, low-scoring and physical. Friday night was no exception. Facing a 14-13 deficit late in the fourth quarter, Bethel Park quarterback Levi Metheny would find Jake Lewis for a 14-yard touchdown pass on 3rd down with 0:45 left, giving the Blackhawks a 21-14 lead that they would not relinquish. Metheny finished with 146 yards through the air and hurled three touchdowns in the win, giving Bethel Park their first win of the season.

Sam Hall and Steve Nagler on the call.

3. Franklin Regional 21, Mars 15

After jumping out to a comfortable 21-8 lead in a AAA Greater Allegheny Conference slugfest, Franklin Regional saw it nearly disappear, until Jake Ross stepped up and made one of the top plays for the Panthers this season. After watching Mars cut their lead to 21-15, Franklin Regional would elect to punt late in the game. Mars would suddenly find an aerial attack, with quarterback Jake Rosswog leading the way. But Rosswog’s late hot streak quickly turned cold, as Ross would step in front of a pass at the one-yard line with 1:26 to go, securing the 21-15 win for Franklin Regional.

MSA Sports’ Josh Rowntree and Cory Campano on the call.

4. East Allegheny 26, Keystone Oaks 21

After Friday night, you can call him “Downtown” Taizjon Brown. Brown, a receiver and defensive back for East Allegheny, picked up loads of all-purpose yards in a 26-21 win over a tough Keystone Oaks foe. The biggest of his big plays were a 70-yard catch and run for a touchdown and, biggest of all, a 100-yard interception return for a score. The interception, a fantastic play, makes the cut for Plays of the Week, as Brown helped propel his team to the AA Century Conference victory.

MSA Sports’ Rob Longo and Adam Hoerner on the call.
