Extra bases: Leechburg returns to the WPIAL consolation game for the second consecutive season. The Blue Devils lost to Carmichaels, 3-2, last season to finish one game short of a PIAA playoff trip. Their last state tournament appearance came in 2009, after they won the consolation game that year. Leechburg is coming off a 5-2 walk-off loss to No. 2 Monessen in the semifinals. Pierce, a four-year starter, struck out 10 in Leechburg's 8-4 quarterfinal win over Sewickley Academy. Fellow senior Daesha Knight had three hits in the game, and senior Hannah Berry and sophomore Grace Reinke doubled. The Blue Devils average 11.9 runs in their wins, 2.8 in their losses. … Union, the Section 1-A champion, is seeking its first PIAA tournament appearance. The Scotties are coming off an 8-2 loss to top-seeded West Greene in the semifinals. Seamans and Shae-Lynn Quinn homered for Union in that game. Seamans, a senior, is batting .745 with six doubles, 11 triples, five homers and 39 RBIs and is 14-1 with a 1.83 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched. Union hits .469 as a team, with eight regulars batting .429 or higher. Nine players have at least 10 RBIs. Union started the season 11-0. The Scotties' three losses are to West Greene, Class 2A semifinalist Mohawk and Poland (Ohio).
