Class 3A

Consolation game

No. 2 Freeport (13-1) vs. No. 4 Avonworth (13-7)

Winner plays: District 10 champion in PIAA first round, June 4

Coaches: Sam Ross, Freeport; Jenna Muncie, Avonworth

Players to watch: Ally DeJidas, Freeport (jr., OF); Maya Kozup, Avonworth (jr., P)

Extra bases: Freeport saw its bid for a perfect season end in the WPIAL semifinals with a 6-4 loss to Southmoreland, as the Yellowjackets couldn't overcome an early four-run deficit. The team twice put the tying run on base in the final three innings only to see the rally snuffed out. The Yellowjackets are in the midst of their best season in decades, having won their first section title since 2000 and advanced to the semifinals for the first time in 25 years. DeJidas leads Freeport in most offensive categories, batting .605 with seven home runs and 25 RBIs. She hit home runs in both of the team's postseason games thus far, a 10-4 quarterfinal win over Waynesburg and the semifinal loss to Southmoreland. Senior Claire Crytzer had three hits in the semifinal game. Eight different players have hit home runs for Freeport this season, and the Yellowjackets have 20 as a team. … Avonworth is coming off a 14-1, five-inning loss to South Park in the semifinals. The top-seeded Eagles scored 10 runs in the first inning of the game. The Antelopes are making their deepest postseason run since 2009, when they finished as WPIAL Class A runner-up and qualified for the state playoffs. That season was their last PIAA berth. Kozup shined in a 3-0 quarterfinal victory over Burrell, scattering seven hits and one walk in a complete-game victory. Avonworth has won 10 of its last 13 games, averaging 9.9 runs per contest in that span.
