Berger returns as Ligonier Valley boys basketball coach

Ligonier Police Chief John Berger is returning as boys basketball coach at Ligonier Valley.

Berger, who coached the Rams for two seasons in 2011-13 and compiled a 30-16 record, was hired by the Ligonier Valley School District on June 11. He served as an assistant coach under Clint Mullen for four seasons prior to taking over in 2011.

He replaced Todd Hepner who resigned after leading the Rams to a PIAA District 6 Class 3A title. Hepner was 73-45 in five seasons.

“When I left before it was because my schedule was too hectic,” Berger said. “I’m looking forward to working with the team and can’t wait to get into the gymnasium.”

Berger was selected from three candidates according to Ligonier Valley Athletic Director Corey Turcheck.

“When John stepped away the first time, he said it was a job conflict,” Turcheck said. “He’s assured us than would be a problem this time.”

Berger also gets to coach nephews, junior guard Michael Marinchak and his younger brother.

Turcheck said he ready to handle Marinchak like any other player.

“John was the selection of the athletic committee,” Turcheck said.
