Blackhawk used a strong kick to break a tie in the final minute of the first half and never looked back in knocking off South Fayette — Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center at the University of Pittsburgh to repeat as Girls AAA champions.

The title was the seventh overall for top-seed Blackhawk and marked the third time they have been able to repeat as WPIAL champions. The Cougars also won back-to-back District 7 crowns in 1996-97 and 1999-2000.

The WPIAL’s leading scorer senior Chassidy Omogrosso got off to a hot start with 10 points in the opening quarter as the Cougars jumped out early to a 10-4 lead before the underdog and #10-seed Lions went on a 14-2 run to fight back and forge an 18-18 tie after the first quarter.

The second quarter was a back and forth affair until the Cougars snapped a 30-30 tie with just over two minutes left to score 7 unanswered.  Senior Courtney Vannoy started and finished the rally with five points including a layup with 6 seconds left.

In the second half, Blackhawk remained in control. South Fayette cut the Cougars lead to three with five minutes left in the third, but never got closer. The Lions trailed 53-43 after three quarters and could never muster a run in the fourth quarter, getting to within eight points but no closer the rest of the way.

Omogrosso led all scorers with 25 points while Vannoy added 19 points. Blackhawk improves to 23-3 and will face South Park on Saturday in the First Round of the PIAA Girls Basketball Playoffs.

Junior Emily Anderson led South Fayette with 15 points and 8 rebounds, 7 of the points she scored in the first quarter.  Junior Autumn Mozick had 13 points while Carlee Kilgus added 11 points.  The Lions magical run through the district playoffs ends with silver and a record of 19-7. South Fayette will battle McGuffey in the opening round of the PIAA state playoffs on Saturday.

SCORE BY QUARTER:

South Fayette Lions : 18 – 12 – 13 – 11 = 54
Blackhawk Cougars : 18 – 19 – 16 – 12 = 65
