2011 has been a tremendous year in high school sports in the WPIAL. It was a year where some familiar champions wore the golden crown again while some new faces surfaced in the championship picture. The latest chase for the MSA Sports Cup is underway as the 2011-2012 high school sports fall season is in the books. There were no medals won by individual runners from the WPIAL in the 2011 PIAA Cross-Country Championships on Saturday in Hershey, but Quaker Valley was able to bring home team gold. The WPIAL football playoffs start Friday night and never before has the postseason picture looked so perfect.Although the WPIAL started crowning football champions in 1914, the league didn’t have playoff games until 1971. A total of 12 teams head into this year’s playoffs with perfect records. No major surprises at the WPIAL Boys and Girls Cross Country Championships, just lots of wind, rain and mud. The fall sports postseason advances on for soccer and volleyball while the high school football regular season comes to an end this week on the MSA Sports Network. It was a golden Saturday for both Ryan Gil, who won the 2010 Boys Class AAA Individual cross-country race while his North Allegheny teammates finished first in the boys team standings at the Parkview Course in Hershey. When it comes to records, maybe its time to stop thinking about Rushel Shell in a WPIAL sense. Maybe its time to look at the entire state. Shell, Hopewells wonderful junior running back, ran for 193 yards against West Allegheny in a 34-31 overtime win last night. Can you say Five-Peat? That is what the Tigers of North Allegheny accomplished last fall in winning their fifth straight WPIAL AAA Boys Cross Country Championship. The Tigers finished with 92 points followed by Baldwin with 109 then North Hills with 158 then Plum with 196. In the Class AAA individual competition, North Allegheny's Ryan Gil placed first with a 15:30.
