WPIAL Week Five Saturday’s Scholastic Starz
September 30, 2012
The only bad thing about a jam-packed Friday night of high school football is that it leaves the Saturday district schedule a tad light. That was the case in Week Five with only THREE WPIAL football games, all on the Class A level. So even though there were only three games, we were still able to keep with the tradition of the Top Five performances from Saturday that led to loud victories on a quiet day.Jake Temple & Nick Kusich - Avella

Thus here are the players who planted their teams flag of victory Friday with a steady dose of awesomeness.Tyler Roth & Troy Apke - Mount Lebanon

Not only did Seneca Valley’s 34-7 victory against Pittsburgh Central Catholic Thursday night give Seneca Valley a leg up on second place in the Northern Eight Conference, it was a monumental win of sorts for the Raiders. * For the first time in a while, the Raiders won a big game against an upper-echelon Class AAAA team. A year ago, Seneca Valley won a WPIAL playoff game for the first time since 2002. This time, the Raiders defeated a Central Catholic team that was ranked No. 4 in Class AAAA by MSA Sports. * The win broke Central Catholic’s 26-game regular-season winning streak. After seeing Clairton clobber Monessen, 52-7, on Thursday night, it makes you wonder if this is the same Clairton team that struggled to beat Chartiers-Houston, 22-20, on the opening night of the season? It most certainly is not the same team – at least defensively. Clairton was without 10 players the first three weeks of the season. The players missed time because of grades or attendance issues from last school year, and the players returned to the team for the Monessen game. Only two of the players who missed the first three weeks were starters. But still, the return of the group of players changed Clairton.

Big Game Hunting for Week Four 2012
September 19, 2012
Rolling through the 2012 season in a hurry as week four comes upon us here in southwestern Pennsylvania, leaves and the weather starting to change. Not much change though at the top of the MSA Sports top ten rankings. The defending champs in each classification all sit atop their thrones with unbeaten records as we approach the midway point. But 2012 is not just a case of the rich getting richer by any stretch. Avella is 3-0 for the first time since 1976 and West Shamokin snapped the longest losing streak in WPIAL history with their 25-6 win over Riverview last Friday. Some change can be good. All this change can make it tough on the “Big Game Hunting” guy, but hey, he’s a gamer.
