WPIAL & City League Week 6 Friday Football Scores
October 3, 2014
Five weeks of gorgeous Friday nights became a distant memory with the first wet night of the season...but it could have been worse. Thunderstorms were predicted for Southwestern Pennsylvania on Friday, but they stayed north and most venues were rain-free until the very end. Speaking of the very end, here are ALL of the final results from the first Friday of October. Games with (MSA) following can be heard live and archived here on The Network. WPIAL CLASS AAAA Foothills Conference: Penn-Trafford Warriors 35 - Hempfield Spartans 21 (MSA) Altoona Mountain Lions 24 - Latrobe Wildcats 14 (MSA) Plum Mustangs 34 - Connellsville Falcons 7 (MSA) Norwin Knights 42 - Kiski Area Cavaliers 3

Chicks Picks – Week Six – 2014
October 2, 2014
Welcome to Week 6 of the high school football season. We have reached the mid-way point in the season—a critical point where some teams make it or break it, step on the gas, or are comfortable setting the cruise control for the remainder of the season.  Chick’s Picks spent some time reflecting on her own first half performance, along with other recent halves of distinction—most notably the Steelers regular season opener against the Browns. The Steelers built a seemingly solid 27-3 lead over the Browns going into halftime.  Battling back, though, the Browns tied the game late in the fourth quarter before the Steelers eventually closed the door with a game-winning field goal.

WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Six 2014
October 1, 2014
The tension is starting to mount here in the 2014 WPIAL football season. On the field, in the standings and, yes sometimes in the plush MSA Sports World Headquarters as some of the MSA gang have occasionally wandered too close to Mike Azadian’s “Friday Night Eats”. Mitch tends to respond to people taking his pizza the way the 2014 Clairton Bears have responded to not picking up their sixth straight WPIAL championship in 2013, angrily and emphatically. So as we get set to go Big Game Hunting here in week six I warn you Don’t poke the Bears, and don’t eat that last chocolate chip cookie, it’s for your own safety.

WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for 9/27
On a picturesque evening at Dormont Stadium, the only WPIAL game on the fifth Saturday of the 2014 season took place. The stakes were high with five teams, Fort Cherry, Brentwood, Northgate and the two teams slated for Saturday  night, Chartiers-Houston and Bishop Canevin all muddled together with one game separating the five in the battle for the final two playoff spots in the Black Hills Conference. One game, but double the stars as they raised the Jolly Roger in Washington County. Alex Ferrari - Chartiers-Houston

WPIAL Week 5 Saturday Football Score
They say one is the loneliest number that you'll ever see. Unless you are flying solo on a Saturday in Primetime. That was the case for the final WPIAL football game in Week 5. 122 district teams strutted their stuff on Friday, now a pair of Class A Black Hills Conference teams battled until the games final minute to officially close the door on the first half of the season. WPIAL CLASS A Black Hills Conference: Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers 26 - Bishop Canevin Crusaders 14  (MSA)

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for 9/26
We hit the midway point of the 2014 WPIAL football regular season with points a plenty. Offenses around the district continue to amass record setting numbers with good solid defenses creeping closer to the endangered species list. Friday night saw 12 teams score over 50 points and five of those teams eclipsed the 60 point plateau. And that doesn't even include the traditional 70+ point total for Clairton. With those mind-numbing numbers, here are some of the top performers from the Fifth Friday of the season. Connor Slomka - Pine-Richland

Scholastic Notebook – 09/26/2014
September 26, 2014
Whether it’s the football end zone or a soccer net, both places are treated like a crime zone by the fall sports teams at Pittsburgh Central Catholic. They might as well put yellow tape around the end zone or net because the Central Catholic teams take a “keep out” attitude towards them. It is unusual for two fall sports teams to have such a successful zero tolerance policy. The Central Catholic football team is 4-0 and has allowed only seven points in four games. The Vikings have three shutouts and are the No. 1 defensive team in the WPIAL. The Central Catholic boys soccer team has played 11 games and has allowed only one goal. The Vikings are 11-0 and have outscored opponents, 56-1.

Chicks Picks – Week Five – 2014
Welcome to Week 5 of the high school football season. Becoming a local celebrity has its perks, and Chick’s Picks was set to enjoy yet another last weekend.  The resident WPIAL football prognosticator was asked by the Pittsburgh Pirates to throw out the first pitch Saturday night when they took on the Brewers.  Chick’s Picks did not hesitate to accept the offer, especially considering the tremendous success the Pirates have had this season. Game night arrived.  Chick’s Picks was escorted onto the field by the Pirates PR staff.  As she stepped onto the mound, she took it all in—the bright lights, the sellout crowd of over 37,000 fans, and even the famous Pirates Pierogies.  Then, the nerves set in.

WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Five – 09/24/2014
September 24, 2014
Welcome to week five of Big Game Hunting. Before we get started a word from our sponsor (yours truly). I am already on the record with regard to this issue but it seems I am the lone voice crying out in the wilderness. I hate the seven o’clock starts! There seems to be an overwhelming movement towards them and it is very frustrating. Why is the hurry that already consumes our everyday lives being allowed to worm its way into my favorite thing? I find it despicable, truly. There I have gotten that off my chest and since I know holding my breath and stomping my feet will not help I will just go Big Game Hunting. Super-irritated by the fact that three of the four-pack are of the shameful seven o’clock start variety.

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for 9/19
Neither players or coaches can complain about the weather in the first four weeks of this season as Mother Nature has cooperated very nicely. And the turned toward huge offensive numbers continued around fields in Southwestern Pennsylvania on the fourth Friday of the WPIAL football season. Thus it makes our job that much tougher with so many young men who deserve post-game kudos, only a few can receive our top ten tip of the cap. Ben DiNucci - Pine-Richland

Scholastic Notebook – 09/19/2014
September 19, 2014
At the rate he is passing, Pine-Richland quarterback Ben DiNucci has a good chance to become the 17th player in WPIAL history to throw for 5,000 career yards. While that is an impressive feat, Pine-Richland does thro the ball often. So DiNucci will naturally pile up yardage. What might be more impressive about DiNucci is his accuracy. DiNucci is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior who you probably wouldn’t want to play in darts. Sure, in Pine-Richland’s spread offense, DiNucci throws a number of short passes. But he still throws downfield and his accuracy is uncanny.
