Welcome to the 2013-14 debut edition of “PIHL Notebook,” your weekly companion to “The PIHL Power Play” on the MSA Sports Network. We return this year with two familiar segments while the third gets a facelift. First, we have your weekly thermometer of streaking teams in “Melting the Ice” while also previewing upcoming MSA broadcasts. The “Scoreboard Watch” is also back with a new twist, providing the highlights in more a capsule format while expanding to include the top t here games from each classification during the past week. That means more teams and players get a mention, which is what this little article is all about. Family and friends are coming to aid of a young Pittsburgh hockey player who suffered a severe spinal cord injury during a recent game. Kevin Kenny, 20, a forward for the Pittsburgh Vengeance of the North American 3HL League, crashed into the boards in the first period of a game with the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks on November 16. Kenny reportedly could not feel anything below his waist following the crash. The 5’10,” 160 lb. former Quaker Valley High School standout underwent emergency surgery on Saturday and had a follow-up procedure as well. He remains in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. As a result of the injury, the teams postponed the November 17 “home and home” game in Cleveland.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 11/18/2013

At the Beaver County Ice Arena in a Hometown Sports Broadcast the Morgantown Mohawks defeat the home standing Blackhawk Cougars by a 6-3 score. Both teams came into the contest undefeated, Morgantown at 3-0, and the Cougars at 2-0. Both teams were scoring goals at a record pace. The Mohawks had 23 in 3 games or 7.6 per game, and Blackhawk had 20 in just their two games and had a 10 goals per game average. At the Beaver County Ice Arena on Tuesday November 5th in a special Hometown Broadcast the Beaver Bobcats score 3 goals within :37 seconds late in the third period to defeat the Blackhawk Cougars by an 8-6 score. Blackhawk down four players due to injury or sickness skated only 11 players plus a goalie in this battle of neighboring school districts. The Bobcats used 14 skaters and a goalie and this would prove to be an advantage late in the game. We celebrated America's Birthday earlier this month with various parades and fireworks. You'll forgive us if we celebrate the 2012-2013 school year with just a parade and no pyrotechnics. It was been another great high school sports year in District 7 of the PIAA. All of us here at the MSA Sports Network and Management Science Associates thank our sponsors and fans for their support during the school year. North Allegheny and Latrobe Win 2013 Pennsylvania Cup State Hockey Titles
Last year, the Pennsylvania Cup Championships were played the day after the PIHL Penguins Cup Finals and Quaker Valley was the only west team to win. This year, there were two days between the PIHL and PA Cup championships and Quaker Valley was the only west team that did NOT win. North Allegheny, Latrobe & Quaker Valley Win 2013 PIHL Penguins Cups
Quaker Valley was the only team to successfully defend their turf in 2013 as the Quakers won the PIHL Penguins Cup Class A championship for a second straight year. Quaker Valley beat Mars to remain perfect this season and up their winning streak to 46 in a row. In Class AA, Latrobe returned to the top with a 5-0 shutout victory over Pine-Richland, giving the Wildcats their fourth Penguins Cup title in the last six years. Another shutout was pitched in the Class AAA finals as North Allegheny handed Peters Township their third straight Penguins Cup Championship game loss in a 2-0 victory that gives NA their second crown and first since 2007.
North Allegheny Rolls In Third Period To Claim Class AAA Penguins Cup Crown

The North Allegheny Tigers got two third period goals from Joe Griffin to claim the 2013 Class AAA PIHL Penguins Cup with a 2-0 victory over the Peters Township Indians Wednesday night at Consol Energy Center. Bradford Thornburgh stopped all 20 shots he faced to pick up the shutout win, his first of the playoffs and fourth of the season.It's the second Penguins Cup Championship for the Tigers, North Allegheny claimed the crown in 2007.
Latrobe Golden In PIHL Class AA Title Game

Latrobe got yet another outstanding performance in a stellar goaltending career by senior Shane Brudnock as the Wildcats added a fourth PIHL Penguin Cup Championship to their High School mantle with a 5-0 blanking of the Pine-Richland Rams in the Class AA championship game. Brudnock stopped all 24 Pine Richland shots that he faced for his 2nd post-season shutout and fifth of the season.
Twice Is Nice For Quaker Valley as They Win PIHL Class A Title Again
The Quaker Valley Quakers continued their winning ways, taking the PIHL Class A Penguins Cup championship for a second straight year with a 5-1 victory over the Mars Planets at Consol Energy Center. Jimmy Perkins scored two goals to lead the Quakers, who have now won 32 straight games and are unbeaten in their last 55. It was the third time that Quaker Valley defeated Mars this season, besting the Planets 5-2 and 4-0 and fifth overall, with 7-0 and 4-2 in last year’s title match.PIHL High School Hockey Notebook – 03/18/2013
