The winter high school sports season comes to an end just as the spring sports season begins as winter officially turns to spring this week here on the MSA Sports Network. Half of the finalists from the 2012 PIHL Class AAA title game are returning for the 2013 Penguins Cup championship contest. Peters Township is back in after blanking State College, however defending champion Bethel Park fell just short after losing the rubber game of their three games this season to North Allegheny. They haven't been log froughts, but a pair of former Penguins Cup champions are headed back to the high school hockey finals. Latrobe ended a three year title game abscence by edging Chartiers Valley while Pine-Richland knocked out top-seed Bishop Canevin in overtime to make it back to the PIHL Championship Game for the first time since 2008. Two games in each classification made for a busy night as the high school playoffs turned into the second round. As has been the case this entire postseason, the higher seeds prevailed in all six contest. A ho-hum first night of Round One of the high school hockey postseason gave way to a pair of Class AAA dandies. Two champions have been crowned in the PIHL high school hockey Open Class Playoffs Thursday night. Wheeling Park laid claim to the 2013 Nailer Cup title with a victory over Morgantown while Ford City defeated Indiana to win the Chiefs Cup championship.
