It has become a tradition like no other...at least during the holidays here at MSA Sports. It's time to look back at another high school sports year with the top stories from around the WPIAL in 2013. Here is our entire countdown fr0m #25 through #1. #25 - Playoff Drought Ends In a year when the Pittsburgh Pirates ended a long Major League Baseball playoff drought, a long WPIAL football playoff drought also came to an end when in Week 9, the Avella Eagles clinched a WPIAL playoffs berth with a 55-14 thrashing of Bentworth to clinch fourth place in the Class A Tri-County South Conference.MSA Sports Top Ten – PIHL Hockey – 01/02/2014

What better way to celebrate championships and the start of a new year then with a parade. It has been another great year in high school sports. There were no games played over the past week due to the Christmas break, so whatever shall we do with ourselves? Welcome to the Christmas week edition of “PIHL Notebook,” your weekly companion to “The PIHL Power Play” on the MSA Sports Network. The league may be on holiday hiatus, but there is still plenty to report. First up, “Melting the Ice” provides your thermometer of streaking teams around the league at the de facto halfway point of the 2013-14 campaign. At the Beaver County Ice Arena on Thursday December 19th the Blackhawk Cougars and Beaver Bobcats, two bitter rivals met, and by the end it was another rock em sock em back and forth battle this time won by the Cougars in come from behind fashion 5-4. Both teams came into the game with identical 6-4 records, and the Bobcats had won the previous meeting on November 21st in come from behind fashion by a 6-5 score. At the Beaver County Ice Arena the Blackhawk Cougars improved to 6-3 with an 8-1 victory over the Trinity Hillers. It was all Cougars in the first period. Kyle Schaefer opened up the scoring at the 6:11 mark with a slap shot to make it 1-0. Robbie Swinderman, and Grant Rombold, would each score and Austin Javens would score twice as Blackhawk would lead 5-0 after 1 period. The Cougars were 1 for 2 on the power play and had 21 shots on goal. Into the second period Hiller goalie Nathan Connelly was replaced in net by Zacchary Kagle and he would only allow one goal in period 2. Rombold would score his second of the game at 5:27 on a wrist shot to make it 6-0. The Cougars would have 25 shots on goal in period two.MSA Sports Top Ten – PIHL Hockey – 12/11/2013

Well the weather outside is frightful, but the broadcast schedule for the final week of the high school football season is quite delightful this week here on the MSA Sports Network. We have all three remaining WPIAL football champions in action this weekend as the Road to Hershey concludes with the PIAA Football Championship Games at Hersheypark Stadium. Family and friends are coming to aid of a young Pittsburgh hockey player who suffered a severe spinal cord injury during a recent game. Kevin Kenny, 20, a forward for the Pittsburgh Vengeance of the North American 3HL League, crashed into the boards in the first period of a game with the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks on November 16. Kenny reportedly could not feel anything below his waist following the crash. The 5’10,” 160 lb. former Quaker Valley High School standout underwent emergency surgery on Saturday and had a follow-up procedure as well. He remains in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. As a result of the injury, the teams postponed the November 17 “home and home” game in Cleveland.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 11/18/2013
