2011 has been a tremendous year in high school sports in the WPIAL. It was a year where some familiar champions wore the golden crown again while some new faces surfaced in the championship picture. Mars proved their girls soccer team is out of this world Friday when they captured the schools first ever state title as the Planets blanked the previously undefeated Villa Jospeh Marie Jems 1-0 at Hersheypark Stadium. Hopewell’s Rushel Shell has a chance to break the state career rushing record in Friday night’s WPIAL Quarterfinals against Franklin Regional. Twelve WPIAL girls soccer teams entered the state playoffs which started Tuesday, and nine are moving on to Round Two this weekend. In a game fitting of a #1 vs. #2 match-up, the Mars Planets defeated the South Park Eagles 2-1 to win WPIAL gold for the second consecutive year and for the third time in the last 11 years. The WPIAL football playoffs start Friday night and never before has the postseason picture looked so perfect.Although the WPIAL started crowning football champions in 1914, the league didn’t have playoff games until 1971. A total of 12 teams head into this year’s playoffs with perfect records. The three district boys soccer champions from 2010 all entered Super Soccer Saturday with a chance to repeat here in 2011. Two teams, Hampton in AA and Seton-LaSalle in A were able to succeed in winning more gold on the pitch. It is hard to win a championship in any sport. It is VERY hard to win a title with an undefeated record. In 2011, a pair of girls soccer teams did just that as Class AA Mars (with one tie) and Class A Greensburg Central Catholic (no ties) winning district gold without tasting defeat.
