WPIAL Baseball/Softball Playoff Recaps for Wednesday 5/13
May 14, 2015
The opening round for both the District 7 baseball and softball postseason took a chilly turn Wednesday. Days after the mercury was knocking on the door of 90 degrees, temps barely got into the 50's, giving the diamond action a late March, early April feel. That didn't prevent some teams from taking care of business while earning a spot in the district Quarterfinals next week in baseball AAAA and AA along with softball AAA and AA. Here are recaps from the games heard live and archived Wednesday here on the MSA Sports Network. A special thanks to Greg Kuntz, Lee Mohn, Jason Tennant, Steve Nagler, Lou Rood, Mike Azadian, Sean Meyers, Rob Longo, Josh Rowntree, Bobby Fox and Bob Gregg for their help on these recaps.

MSA Sports Top Ten – WPIAL Softball Playoff Teams – 05/06/2015
May 6, 2015
Every Tuesday during the regular season, MSA Sports ranks the Top 10 WPIAL softball teams in each classification. For our final rankings this spring though, we will slot all 61 district softball postseason bound squads with 12 in AAAA, 17 in AAA, 17 in AA and 15 in A. As is the case in all of our playoff rankings, its more of a seeding than true ranking as we follow the WPIAL rules in an effort to avoid teams from the same section playing each other. There will be FOUR First Round bye's in Quad-A and ONE in Single-A. In both Triple-A and Double-A, there are 17 teams thus there will be one Preliminary Round contest in each of those two classes.

Scholastic Notebook – 05/01/2015
May 1, 2015
Apparently, Bo knows softball. Bo Teets is in his sixth year as the girls softball coach at Monessen High School and is conducting one of the biggest turnaround stories in the WPIAL in any sport. Earlier this week, Monessen qualified for the WPIAL Class A playoffs. It is a monumental feat for the Greyhounds when you consider this will be the first time they will be in the postseason. It’s also quite impressive when you consider how far the Greyhounds have come under Teets. Teets was hired as Monessen’s coach before the 2010 season. He took over a program that was, in a word, horrible. The Greyhounds were 9-88 in six years before Teets.

Hometown Softball Recap for South Side Rams – 05/01/2015
At South Side High School in Hookstown Pa on Thursday, the South Side Rams defeated the Burgettstown Blue Devils 12-2 in a section 1 AA game. The win puts each of them at 9-1 in section play so they will share the Section 1 title. The Rams had a fantastic offensive day and it started in the first inning, Hunter Hand hit a 2 run HR to spark the offense to a 3-0 early lead. That was enough for Ram pitcher McKenna Smith as she zipped thru the Blue Devil lineup with ease. She had 6 strikeouts in a row at one point in the first three innings. She won the game striking  out 10, walking only 3 and giving up just two runs.

Hometown Softball Recap for Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers – 04/25/2015
April 25, 2015
It's a shame one of these two teams had to lose. Both pitchers for Chartiers-Houston and Jefferson-Morgan pitched a gem, but it was the Rockets who walked away with the W in a tight Section 1 A softball game. Senior Megan Kraushaar lead off for the Bucaneers, making contact with one of Maddie Ludrosky's pitches, flying out to right field. She would be the only batter to make contact until she was up again in the 4th inning, as Ludrosky struck out the next 8 straight in the lineup.

April 23, 2015
The South Side Rams  were looking to put some breathing space between themselves and the Avonworth Antelopes for 2nd place in Class AA Section 1, and the only way they were going to make that happen was to beat the Lopes outright on its home turf, which they did 6-4 on Thursday.

Hometown Softball Recap for Elizabeth Forward Warriors – 04/19/2015
Keyed by a strong pitching performance and opportunistic offense, the host Elizabeth Forward Lady Warriors scored a 4-0 victory against McKeesport at William Penn Field on Saturday. Sophomore Lauren Mathews, in her first varsity start at pitcher, tossed a complete-game shutout, limiting the Lady Tigers to just six hits. Mathews, who struck out five, showed poise by holding McKeesport scoreless despite allowing a pair of baserunners in both the second and fifth innings. Offensively, Elizabeth Forward took an early lead by capitalizing on the control issues of Tigers’ hurler Sam Arthrell. Three Warriors walked in the opening frame, including Lauren Cain, who drew a free pass with the bases loaded to score Lexi Ribarchak.

Hometown Softball Recap for Baldwin Highlanders – 04/18/2015
April 18, 2015
It was the perfect night for a softball game. Clear, calm and cool -- Arguably the demeanor of the junior pitcher for Baldwin, Jaimie Schleicher. Although Peters Township did score a run in the 7th inning, the late rally wasn't enough as the Highlanders defeated the Indians 2-1 at Baldwin High School. Schleicher started the game perfect through 3 and two-thirds innings with 5 strikeouts. She also helped offensively in the bottom of the 3rd, hitting an RBI-single, allowing freshman Taylor Dadig to score after she singled and stole a base.
