Seton-LaSalle boys basketball coach Mark Walsh is known as “Knobby.” He has two brothers, Kevin and Danny, who also are known as “Knobby.” The boys’ father, Ed, also is known as “Knobby.” It is a crazy name game. But at Seton-LaSalle, just call Mark Walsh one thing. “Winner.” Walsh has made Seton-LaSalle basketball relevant again. Well, more than relevant. He has guided the Rebels to one of the best seasons in school history. Seton-LaSalle won a WPIAL title for only the second time since joining the league in the mid 1970s. Also, Seton-LaSalle has a 27-1 record. That is the most wins since the school joined the WPIAL.

West Allegheny Girls and Mars Boys Claim WPIAL AA Swimming Gold

The West Allegheny Indians girls swim team avenges a tough loss last year to the South Fayette Lions in the team competition by winning their 3rd WPIAL title in five years. It is their 5th top two finish in the last five years as they settled for second in 2010, and 2013. They started the day with an 18 point lead after the first day of compensation, and at one time the Lions cut the lead to points. However after the 3rd event of the day they surged ahead with solid performances in the last 4 events to win 227 to 199.

North Allegheny Sweeps WPIAL AAA Boys and Girls Swimming Gold Again

For the third straight year and for the fifth time in six years, North Allegheny can tell a golden 'tail' about the WPIAL Swimming Championships. The Tigers girls teams cruised to their sixth straight WPIAL team swimming championship while the boys team edged Upper St. Clair to capture a third straight title and the teams eighth in the last nine years. Here are the final team standings and the Day Two results from Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday in Class AAA.

WPIAL Class AAA Boys and Grils Swimmings Results from Thursday

A tight race on the boys side thru day 1 of the McDonald’s/WPIAL Class AAA swimming championship, not so much on the girls side. North Allegheny leads Upper St. Clair by 1.5 points for the boys championship, after the Panthers beat out the Tigers in the final event, the Boys 200 Freestyle Relay. North Allegheny has won the last two championships but USC has been breathing down their necks. For the girls, NA has won the last 5 titles, the last by 160 point margin over Oakland Catholic. The Tigers led by 150 points entering Friday’s action. Several WPIAL records fell during the day. North Allegheny set a new mark in the 200 Medley Relay,

WPIAL Class AA Boys and Grils Swimmings Results from Thursday
It was a family affair to claim gold at the Boys and Girls 50 yard freestyle on Day 1 of the McDonalds/WPIAL Class Swimming Championships Thursday at Trees Pool. Sophomore Emily Zimcosky of Geibel Catholic claimed the top spot, minutes later senior John Paul Zimcosky reached the top of the medal stand as the Gators swept the event. The boys team race is close, Mars leads Indiana by 4 points, 116-112. West Allegheny leads Blackhawk by 18 points in the girls standings.

NH’s Bostick & Char Valley’s Lohman Win WPIAL AAA Diving Gold
February 22, 2014
North Hills senior Noah Bostick captured a bronze medal as a sophomore and at last year’s competition he took home the silver with a score of 496.65. Consider the progression complete for Bostick as he captured the WPIAL Class AAA gold medal by posting a score of 506.85 at North Allegheny High School. Bostick was solid throughout all three rounds of the meet. After going back and forth with Penn-Trafford sophomore Joey Ference heading into the final round of three dives, Bostick took control with his first final dive and finished 52.10 points ahead of the second place finisher, Andrew Doerfler of North Allegheny.

S. Fayette’s Zombeck and Mohawk’s Stelter Repeat as WPIAL AA Diving Champs

At South Park High School in the WPIAL Boys AA Diving Championships, Senior Stephen Zombeck wins his second WPIAL championship in a row. He outdistanced 2nd place finisher Micah Ringer (last years silver medalist) by 51.15 points. Last year he beat Ringer in a close contest by 10.6 points. Zombeck In the process, smashed his score of last year of 353.25. He posted a 423.55 besting last years mark by 70.30 points. Ringer beat his score by 30 points from last year taking the silver 2 straight years.  In 2012 as Sophomores Zombeck finished 2nd, Ringer 5th.

Here is our entire countdown fr0m #25 through #1. #25 - Playoff Drought Ends In a year when the Pittsburgh Pirates ended a long Major League Baseball playoff drought, a long WPIAL football playoff drought also came to an end when in Week 9, the Avella Eagles clinched a WPIAL playoffs berth with a 55-14 thrashing of Bentworth to clinch fourth place in the Class A Tri-County South Conference.

It has become a tradition like no other...at least during the holidays here at MSA Sports. It's time to look back at another high school sports year with the top stories from around the WPIAL in 2013. We conclude our countdown with the five stories that ended up #5 through #1. #5 - Section 3 Superiority Everybody knew that WPIAL Class AAAA Section 3 in boys basketball was special. But the strength of the four postseason representatives ended up being historic. #1 seed New Castle, #2-seed North Allegheny, #3-seed Hampotn and #12-seed Seneca Valley all advanced through the First Round...then through the Quarterfinals before making the Class AAAA Semifinals a personal Section 3 in-house tournament.

We continue our countdown with the five stories that ended up #20 through #16. #20 - Virgin Playoff Teams There are teams that haven't played in the WPIAL football playoffs in 'X' amount of years, then there are schools that have never played in a WPIAL football game...ever. Until this 2013 season that is. Summit Academy is a small court-adjudicated facility in rural Butler County that started in 1998. The Knights roster not only changes drastically from year to year, but also could change from week-to-week.

South Fayette’s Stephen Zombek & Mohawk’s McKenzie Stelter Win WPIAL Class AA Diving Gold
The winter WPIAL diving championships began early Friday afternoon at South Park High School in South Park with nine invitations to the PIAA state diving championships up for grabs.The boys field saw a lot of familiar faces carry over from the 2012 competition into 2013's. With the exception of South Park's Bill Rountree, the top six divers from last year were in the field this year. The success of each of these divers had indeed carried over into Friday's dive. The sixteen diver field had a lot of great dives and a few duds during the duration of the competition. Going into the semifinals and the final round the group had narrowed itself down to three divers vying for the number one spot.
