WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week Nine 2016

This past weekend already marked the conclusion of the 2016 WPIAL football regular season. This campaign brought about massive changes courtesy of the realignment, which produced both positive and negative outcomes. Still, Week 9 had significant meaning to the dozens of teams in playoff contention, as well as to the teams and players who took the field for the final team this year. This week's batch of plays includes a game-sealing interception in the closing seconds in a battle of neighboring schools, a long run that broke open a matchup of top teams in 1A, another tight bout in the Beaver Valley Conference with a playoff spot on the line, and a pick-6 in a key matchup in 5A.   1. Provenzo (FR), Skolnekovich (QV) & Littman (WT) Win WPIAL Boys X-Country Gold

On a rainy and mud-filled day at the 2016 WPIAL boys cross country championship, the biggest story of the afternoon was Seneca Valley dethroning North Allegheny in Class AAA. The Tigers had captured the previous 11 team titles, but the Raiders, who also edged them in section competition this year, reigned victorious at Cooper's Lake Campground near Slippery Rock. Seneca Valley's margin of victory over NA was small, as both teams had their top five runners all finish within the top 22. As a result, both squads, along with Butler, advance to the state championship next month. In Class AA, Greensburg Salem's Golden Lions lived up to their moniker, besting Quaker Valley for the top spot. South Fayette won a tiebreaker over New Castle to move on the the PIAA's, as well.

Incredibly, the 2016 football regular season is already winding down, with this past week representing the penultimate opportunity for many squads to make a playoff push or improve their standings. On a rain-filled weekend in the region, teams and players battled the elements to once again produce an impressive collection of outstanding moments. Among the plays to make the cut is another monumental clash in the Beaver Valley Conference, a long run that provided insurance in a crucial 5A battle, a QB keeper that helped fuel a big upset in 2A, and a spectacular interception return for a score. 1. WPIAL and City League Football Scores for 9/16

With the advent of Week Zero here in the 2016 high school football season, there will be ten weeks of regular season football before we open up the Highway to Heinz and the WPIAL Playoffs. In those ten weeks, none were a busier Friday night than the one here in Week 3. All but two district teams were in action, making for a busy WPIAL football slate with 60 gridiron contests. CTK ’16: Week One WPIAL Football Scrimmages
August 16, 2016
FINALLY! High school football camps throughout Pennsylvania opened for business on Monday. That means district teams have five days of practice before they hit the field for either the first of two scrimmages or perhaps their only scrimmage in preparation for the season. All Pennsylvania high school football teams have the option to either play the normal two scrimmages or play one scrimmage this week then play a non-conference season opener in Week Zero on August 26th and 27th. Scrimmage number one takes place this Saturday, August 20th on fields around Southwestern Pennsylvania. Here is a rundown of all the first week scrimmages involving all of the WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League high school football teams.

Four Female WPIAL Grads Competing in Rio Olympics

If you saw them compete for their Western Pennsylvania high schools, it really should come as no surprise that the four WPIAL graduates competing in the Rio de Janiero Olympics are doing exactly what they did as youngsters: dominate. With national and international accomplishments already under their belts, Meghan Klingenberg, Leah Smith, Amanda Polk and Christa Harmotto-Dietzen have taken it a step further during the Brazilian games, excelling against the world’s highest level of competition. Additionally, the accomplishments of these athletes show the progressive movement of female athletics throughout the region, state and country. This year, the United States of America broke the record for the most female athletes to participate in the Olympics.

Ackerman dominates, as Wild Things Fall to Evansville
August 4, 2016
The Washington Wild Things and Evansville Otters played game two of their three game series at Bosse Field Wednesday night. The offense couldn't get Anything going on the night as Hunter Ackerman dominated on the mound for the Evansville Otters as they would win by the score of 4-2. Sam Agnew-Wieland took the mound for the Wild Things making his fourth start of the season. He came out in the first and retired the first man of the inning before Josh Allen hit a solo shot over the left field wall, his eighth home run of the year, as the Otters took an early 1-0 lead. Agnew-Wieland would then settle down and get the final two outs of the inning.

Hempfield’s Golden Season Continues With PIAA Softball Title

Alexa Pastor’s bases loaded sacrifice fly scored Jordan Sterling with the game’ s only run in the bottom of the 8th inning as Hempfield defeated Avon Grove 1-0 to capture the 2016 PIAA AAAA Softball Championship at Beard Field on the campus of Penn State University.

Ellwood City Blasts Its Way to Second AA Softball Crown
June 3, 2016
Throughout the spring, the long ball has become synonymous with Ellwood City softball. So it should really come as no surprise that it was a pair of blasts, numbers 17 and 18 this year, which lifted the Wolverines to their second WPIAL Softball Championship. Reagen Miller hit a grand slam in the first inning and Camille Maine followed with a three-run home run in the following frame as No. 1 Ellwood City (20-0) ran away with a 10-0, five inning rout of No. 3 South Park (14-4) at California University of Pennsylvania’s Lilley Field on Friday. “I knew we had the capabilities,” Ellwood City coach Gary Rozanski said. “I didn’t know that we’d do it right off the bat like that. It seems the last few weeks we put the hits together.”

WPIAL Baseball Recaps From Monday, May 16th

In the final year of the four classification playoff format, the two biggest classes were the first to take the stage as the curtain went up in the 2016 district baseball postseason. While Class AAA went as expected with all the higher seeds winning with the exception of defending champion Knoch as a #10-seed, two double-digit seeds, #12 Franklin Regional and #14 Norwin pulled off surprised and are now Quarterfinals bound.
