WPIAL Alum Q&A – Brandon Buck

The Ambridge Area boys volleyball team has become a dynasty in recent years. The Bridgers have claimed seven of the past eight titles in Class AA, including each of the past four. Brandon Buck was instrumental in Ambridge securing several of those titles, and now he's a key member of the St. Francis program. Brandon is this week's focus of the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Following the Bridgers semifinals loss in 2011 when Buck was a freshman, the outside hitter helped propel Ambridge to three straight titles over the Derry Area Trojans. In WPIAL boys' volleyball, a select few teams have established themselves as perennial powerhouses. In Class AAA, North Allegheny enjoyed a historic run of titles. Meanwhile, in Class AA, Ambridge Area has repeatedly captured gold. Additionally, Derry Area frequently boasts a squad that contends for the WPIAL crown, and has often made deep runs through the state playoffs, as well. We all knew it was coming. A major change to the WPIAL high school sports landscape based on the PIAA's decision to increase from four to six classifications in basketball and softball, plus the increase in other sports such as soccer, volleyball and lacrosse. The WPIAL Board of Control approved the various steering committee's re-alignment suggestions starting with the 2016-2017 school year. This alignment also will be for the 2017-2018 school year. While WPIAL admiinistrators, coaches, players and fans will have to wait until Monday, February 15th for the new WPIAL Six Classification alignments to be announced, the structure of the sections and the playoff format were released on Wednesday. WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said after investigating what course the WPIAL should take after the PIAA expanded classifications in several sports last fall, the district will follow suit and follow the classes set forth by the state expansion.MSA Sports Top 25 WPIAL Stories From 2015 Countdown: #10 – #1

WPIAL Alum Q&A – April Krivoniak

Competing in one college sport is very challenging, but playing two sports at the collegiate level is incredibly impressive. April Krivoniak, a junior at Robert Morris University, competes on both the volleyball and track and field teams for the Colonials. As a result, she is the featured athlete on this week’s installment of WPIAL Alum Q&A. Krivoniak’s diverse athleticism was on display prior to college, as she competed in three sports, including basketball, while at Greater Latrobe High School. She made quite a mark on the volleyball court, however, as she became a four-year starter for the Wildcats. She was a three-time section honoree, and during her sophomore and season campaigns, Krivoniak earned All-WPIAL honors.PIAA Alignment Numbers for 2016 & 2017 – Fall Sports

The new alignment list has been released by the PIAA for the 2016 and 2017 fall sports seasons. With the expanded classifications, there are still a lot of questions to be answered by WPIAL school officials and the schools themselves before anything in finalized and conferences are set. School must make a decision by mid-December if they want to remain in their designated classification OR decide to move up in class. Bishop Canevin didn't even win it's regular season section, but the Crusaders had a golden shine to their game in the postseason. Two weeks after winning the schools second WPIAL girls volleyball championship, Bishop Canevin added a first ever PIAA state title to its resume. The Crusaders beat District 5 champion North Star in three games to capture the only state title for a WPIAL school this fall. District 11 champion Parkland won the state AAA championship while District 3 champion Berks Catholic captured state gold in AA.
