WPIAL Alum Q&A – Brandon Buck

The Ambridge Area boys volleyball team has become a dynasty in recent years. The Bridgers have claimed seven of the past eight titles in Class AA, including each of the past four. Brandon Buck was instrumental in Ambridge securing several of those titles, and now he's a key member of the St. Francis program. Brandon is this week's focus of the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Following the Bridgers semifinals loss in 2011 when Buck was a freshman, the outside hitter helped propel Ambridge to three straight titles over the Derry Area Trojans. In all three of those campaigns, Buck was honored as an All-State performer.

In WPIAL boys' volleyball, a select few teams have established themselves as perennial powerhouses. In Class AAA, North Allegheny enjoyed a historic run of titles. Meanwhile, in Class AA, Ambridge Area has repeatedly captured gold. Additionally, Derry Area frequently boasts a squad that contends for the WPIAL crown, and has often made deep runs through the state playoffs, as well. One of the Trojans' top performers in recent memory is the focus of this week's Q&A, as current Juniata student-athlete Matt Vasinko is profiled.

WPIAL Girls Sports Realignment

We all knew it was coming. A major change to the WPIAL high school sports landscape based on the PIAA's decision to increase from four to six classifications in basketball and softball, plus the increase in other sports such as soccer, volleyball and lacrosse. The WPIAL Board of Control approved the various steering committee's re-alignment suggestions starting with the 2016-2017 school year. This alignment also will be for the 2017-2018 school year. WPIAL Boys Sports Realignment

We all knew it was coming. WPIAL SPORTS SECTION & PLAYOFF STRUCTURE UNVEILED

While WPIAL admiinistrators, coaches, players and fans will have to wait until Monday, February 15th for the new WPIAL Six Classification alignments to be announced, the structure of the sections and the playoff format were released on Wednesday. WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said after investigating what course the WPIAL should take after the PIAA expanded classifications in several sports last fall, the district will follow suit and follow the classes set forth by the state expansion.
