A sizzling September is off and running as the 2015-2016 high school sports year kicks into gear this week here on the MSA Sports Network. We move on to Week Two of the high school football season with 29 WPIAL weekend contests starting Friday night with the MSA Sports Pregame Show and concluding later that night with the WPIAL Football Scoreboard Show. For the second time in school history, Fox Chapel will have to settle for being the silver Foxes in PIAA Class AAA. The 2015 WPIAL champions won the first game, but then dropped three straight to District 11 champion Parkland Saturday at Penn State. In Class AA, District 3 champion Northeastern defeated District 10 champion Saegertown in three games. Four WPIAL baseball teams have made it to the PIAA semifinals. The main ingredient to their postseason success is simple. Pitching. Of course, pitching always is key in baseball, but you might be scratching your head to come up with a group of WPIAL teams that made it this far and that have such a strong common thread of stellar pitching between them. The four are Shaler (Class AAAA), Knoch (AAA), Neshannock (AA) and Quaker Valley (AA). Of the four, only Neshannock has really made a huge impact offensively, scoring 45 runs in six postseason games. Spring is the time for things to bloom, right? This spring has been a time for a group of young WPIAL athletes to sprout. One of the storylines for spring sports in the WPIAL has been the young blood that has flowed through the league and made an impact. In case you didn’t notice, it has been a spring where an unusually a number of sophomores or freshmen did some terrific things in a few different sports. Fox Chapel was the last team to win a Class AAA district boys volleyball title before North Allegheny went on a eight year run and the Foxes reclaimed their spot on top after the Tigers run ended in the Quarterfinals. Meanwhile, the run continues for Ambridge and the Bridgers claimed a fourth straight Class AA crown and the schools seventh championship in the last eight years. Fox Chapel Wins WPIAL Boys Volleyball Class AAA Title

In 2006, Fox Chapel won the WPIAL Boys AAA Volleyball Championship. Since then, nobody not named "North Allegheny" has been able to accomplish that feat. Until Friday night. No. 1 Fox Chapel used massive net play and tenacious serving to defeat No. 2 Seneca Valley 3-1 (25-13, 25-11, 20-25, 25-21) to claim their second WPIAL Boys AAA Volleyball Championship on Friday night at Baldwin High School. The win officially ends the run of North Allegheny, which had won eight consecutive titles and eleven of the last 12, with Fox Chapel in 2006 being the lone exception. The Tigers bowed out in the 2015 Quarterfinals to Plum.
Ambridge Captures Fourth Straight WPIAL Boys Volleyball AA Crown
The Ambridge Area boys’ volleyball dynasty continued at Baldwin High School on Friday, as the Bridgers bested Obama Academy in four sets to capture their fourth-consecutive Class AA crown. The Bridgers have been a staple of success, now with seven titles in the past eight campaigns, while the Eagles were playing in their first season in the WPIAL. Despite the disparity in the history of the programs, all four sets were competitive, with Ambridge prevailing 25-19, 25-23, 24-26, 25-22.

The curtain went up on the opening round on both the District 7 baseball, softball and boys volleyball postseason on a breezy Tuesday. There was your typical round one mix of thrillers and blow outs as the Quarterfinals were set in baseball AAA and A along with softball AAAA and A and volleyball AAA. Four athletes who would later go on to professional careers, several multi-sport athletes, four coaches who won nearly 40 WPIAL championships between them, an old-school baseball player whose son continued his Major League Baseball legacy and a team that won nine WPIAL and PIAA playoff games en route to a state basketball title by an average margin of victory of 25.8. Those are some of the headliners of the WPIAL Hall of Fame class of 2015. The WPIAL held a news conference Thursday morning to announce its ninth annual class. The best distance runner in WPIAL history might not compete in track this season because of an illness and injuries. That leaves the door open for someone. Madeleine Davison has her foot in the door. Davison is a junior at North Allegheny. While Shaler’s Brianna Schwartz was running her way to records last year, Davison was often close behind, sometimes just a second or two away.
