Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Central Valley Warriors
At Central Valley High School in Hometown Volleyball action the Central Valley Warriors defeat the Quaker Valley Quakers in 3 games. Scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-23. The Warriors take over second place in section 2 AA with a 4-1 record. Quaker Valley falls to 3-2 and holds third place. In Game 1, the Quakers played solid defense and kept it close early, but at 7-7 the Warriors took off. They would end the game with a 18-8 run. They dominated on the front court on defense in the middle, and offense on the left and right side. Eryn Yuran, Belen Brown, Kaleah Jones, and Christina Kent took turns taking control of the game. QV couldn't get past the wall they set up in the middle, and couldn't withstand the depth CV threw at them winning 25-16.

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Brentwood Spartans – 09/18/2014
September 18, 2014
In a pivotal early season matchup between two teams struggling to find consistency, the Vincentian Academy Royals staged a huge rally in defeating the Brentwood Spartans on their home court by a score of 3-2.  While Vincentian Academy started strong in the first two games of the match by grabbing early leads, the Spartans would eventually battle back and win both by scores of 25-23 and 25-22.  Brentwood was paced early on by the attacking of their outside hitters, Kaitlyn McNamara, Hannah Livingston and Alexis Wagner and by getting some excellent blocks for key points by middle Allison Mrkonja.  Mrkonja would finish with a total of five blocks in the match.

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Avonworth Antelopes – 09/15/2014
September 15, 2014
Avonworth had no problem at home Monday evening with Class AAA opponent Hampton in this non-section matchup, winning 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-15) over the Talbots. Game 1 proved to be the closest of the night, as Hampton had a 4-2 lead, but that proved to be the Talbots only lead of the evening. Tied at 6, Avonworth ran of three unanswered points to lead 9-6 and the Antelopes never looked back. Avonworth would add two more 3 point rallies and then grabbed the victory by scoring 7 of the games last 8 points.

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – South Side
South Side (3-1) got off to a hot start en route to a 3-0 (25-9, 28-26, 25-19) victory over Northgate (1-2) on Thursday night in Hookstown. The Rams were paced by Senior Outside Hitter Alexis Dhayer, who led all players with nine kills in the match, despite not playing for most of the second set. But it was South Side's quick and streaky start that propelled the Rams the most, as they stormed to a 25-9 first set victory. In the opening set, South Side started on a 5-0 run, then were led by serving specialist Lena Pieto, who helped rattle off eight-straight points, giving the Rams a 13-2 lead. A 4-0 run moments later would help South Side run away with the first set.

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Central Valley
September 11, 2014
At Central Valley High School, the Central Valley Warriors girls volleyball team, in their first appearance on the MSA Sports Network, beat the Ambridge Bridgers 3-0. Scores of the three games were 25-15, 25-19, and 25-21. Central Valley has a veteran team under Dennis Damp with 5 seniors and 3 juniors among the rotation. Coach Damp who has 5 WPIAL Boys titles to his credit, has rounded this years Warriors into a true team. Everyone contributes and they worked together in the victory over the Bridgers.

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Chartiers-Houston
September 9, 2014
The Buccaneers of Chartiers-Houston took the victory in straight sets (25-11, 25-23, 25-23) over the Avella Eagles Tuesday night. Led by head coach Sean Cleary, the Lady Bucs were able to win all three games despite some sloppy play at times. In the beginning, it was a one-sided match. Avella had some communication problems and Char-Houston took advantage. Lex Tatano provided the offense with her powerful serve taking the team on a 6 point and 8 point run.  The Bucs took care of business, yet games two and three were a different story.

MSA SPORTS CUP: Seton-LaSalle Are Rebels With a Cause After Winning AA Cup
July 2, 2014
For only the third time in the eleven years of the MSA Sports Cup Class AA chase, the torch has been passed to a new champion. Greensburg Central Catholic won the first three years, followed by a five year run by Shady Side Academy and the last two years with Quaker Valley on top. Now thanks to a lot of hardwood gold, Seton-LaSalle High School is wearing the Cup crown. After a couple of close calls in recent years, Seton-LaSalle was lifted to the top spot in part because of double gold on the basketball court this winter followed up with some diamond success in the spring.

MSA SPORTS CUP: South Fayette Roars to First Class AAA Cup Title
July 1, 2014
The first ten years of the MSA Sports Cup has shown us that while there are a couple of dominating schools in the other three classifications, the chase for the Class AAA Cup has been up for grabs with eight different schools earning The Cup in ten years. Now in the eleventh year of this competition, we have another first time winner in Triple-A making it nine different champs in eleven years. After finishing as the runner-up in 2012-2013 and being a steady member on the Top 5 in recent years, South Fayette is finally enjoying its day in the Championship Sun with a convincing victory.

MSA SPORTS CUP: Another Year, Another Quad-A Title for North Allegheny
June 30, 2014
Another school year and another MSA Sports Cup in Class AAAA for North Allegheny High School. NA captured their 11th Cup in eleven years since the MSA Sports Network started this school year long competition to determine the top sports programs in each classification. There are 20 sports in which schools can earn points in the competition and for the second straight year and only the second time in this history of the coveted competition, the Tigers earned points in ALL of them. In the 2012-2013 school year, North Allegheny scored a mind-numbing and record 1,115 points. In 2013-2014, they had to settle for a mere 965 points. The second place school finished 530 points behind NA.

2014 PIAA BOYS VOLLEYBALL STATE PLAYOFFS RESULTS
June 8, 2014
The golden chase for a pair of WPIAL teams in the boys state volleyball playoffs ended with a silver lining. In both the Class AAA and Class AA state finals, it was a matchup of District 7 vs District 3 teams and it turned out to be a clean sweep for D-3 as both North Allegheny and Ambridge had to settle for state silver. Scholastic Notebook – 06/06/2014

Connor Coward’s right arm has been a major part of Seneca Valley’s turnaround story and march through the postseason. But Coward’s bat is also starting to be a big factor. Coward is a senior pitcher-shortstop for Seneca Valley. He is one of the top pitchers in the WPIAL, but he pitched only one inning in the regular season because of a stress fracture in his back.

The calendar may change, but the title winners rarely do after North Allegheny won a record eighth straight Class AAA championship and Ambridge picked up a third consecutive district crown. Eight is Great as North Allegheny Wins Another WPIAL AAA Boys Volleyball Title
May 23, 2014
For an unprecedented eighth year in a row, the North Allegheny Tigers are WPIAL champions in boys volleyball. The Tigers used a furious rally in game one to build momentum and propel them to a 3-0 victory over Norwin for the Class AAA crown. Set scores for Thursday night’s match at Baldwin were 25-23, 25-11 and 25-21. Norwin jumped out quickly in the first set, scoring the game’s opening four points and building a seven-point advantage. With the score at 16-9, however, North Allegheny began chipping away at the Knights’ lead. By late in the set, the Tigers had stormed all the way back to tie the score at 22. Then, with the score knotted at 23, a block by senior David Haus and a Norwin miscue gave North Allegheny the come-from-behind victory.

Ambridge Three-Peats as WPIAL Boys Volleyball Double-A Champs
For the third consecutive year, the Ambridge Area boys’ volleyball team claimed the Class AA championship, defeating Derry Area in straight sets 29-27, 26-24, 25-20. The top-seeded Bridgers used a pair of dramatic comebacks to capture the first two sets, and pulled away at the end of the third set to secure the three-peat at Baldwin High School.
