Chicks Picks – 09/15/2011

Welcome to Week 3 of the high school football season. Against her better judgment, Chick’s Picks decided to participate in a fantasy football draft in late August. Once the draft had concluded, it was clear that Chick’s Picks had put together what would be considered by most to be quite the all-star roster. After the first week of the season, her team–Favre Dollar Footlong–sat at (1-0) after an impressive 122-12 route of her opponent.

After the win, Chick’s Picks received an email from the league commissioner informing her that she had been banned from the league. The commish’s reasoning was, more or less, insider trading. The league felt that Chick’s Picks should be ruled ineligible due to her gift of clairvoyance, deeming her, “too knowledgeable to fairly continue participation in the league.”

Insulted and somber, Chick’s Picks put her short-lived fantasy football career to rest and swore to stick with her first love, pigskin prognosticating.

Last week, Chick’s Picks finished with a 49-18 (73%) record, bringing her season total to 105-30 (78%).

Here are this week’s big games:

CLASS AAAA
#2 Upper St. Clair (2-0) at #3 North Allegheny (2-0)
The Tigers welcome the Panthers to Wexford Friday night in this non-conference battle of top-ranked Class AAAA powerhouses. North Allegheny is coming off of a 49-7 thumping of Butler last week. Upper St. Clair routed Norwin, 42-0.  The Panthers also made a bold statement in a 49-0 rout of Shaler in Week 1. This will be Upper St. Clair’s first road game of the season. Regardless, this week’s matchup against the Tigers will prove to be a true test for both sides. The Panthers have yet to allow a point this season.  When these two met last season, North Allegheny held Upper St. Clair scoreless en route to a 27-0 victory. Chick’s Picks thinks the tides will turn this time around…Upper St. Clair over North Allegheny.

CLASS AAA
#10 Blackhawk (2-0) at #9 West Allegheny (1-1)
Parkway Conference action continues for the Cougars and the Indians in Imperial Friday night. Last week, Blackhawk edged Moon, 23-19, while West Allegheny fell just short to defending WPIAL Class AAA champ Central Valley, 13-9.  The Indians boast a pass-happy offense, featuring experienced QB Dylan Bongiorni. The Cougars, on the other hand, rely heavily on their three-back rotation of Mike Shamsky, Brandon Mansell, and Cole Chiappialle. West Allegheny has not lost to Blackhawk since 2007, 21-7. Since then, the Indians have gone 3-0 and outscored the Cougars 75-13. Chick’s Picks thinks the trend continues for the Indians…West Allegheny over Blackhawk.

CLASS AA
#6 Steel Valley (2-0) at South Fayette (1-1)
Century Conference play kicks off as the Ironmen and the Lions meet Friday night in McDonald. Last week, Steel Valley upended West Shamokin, 42-6, while South Fayette shut out Summit Academy, 34-0.  This week’s contest will be the first away from Munhall for the Ironmen, who were impressive in Week 1 with a 57-13 win over Class AAA Albert Gallatin. The Lions also opened their season with a tough test against a ranked Class AAA West Mifflin team, which went to the wire before the Titans came away with a 21-13 win. Steel Valley has proven thus far that returning only four offensive starters has not been a hindrance. That could change, though, as they face the defending champ Lions, who have also been plagued by graduation. The Ironmen have not defeated the Lions since 2007. South Fayette has since gone 3-0 and outscored Steel Valley, 87-27. Chick’s Picks likes the Ironmen to turn things around this time…Steel Valley over South Fayette.

CLASS A
#3 Sto-Rox (2-0) at Neshannock (2-0)
The Lancers welcome the Vikings to open Big 7 Conference play. Neshannock comes into this week after a narrow 7-0 victory over Serra. Sto-Rox, on the other hand, crushed Carlynton, 40-6.  The Lancers are relying on two quarterbacks this season to provide added depth–Michael Sanflippo and Ernie Burkes. The Vikings are again loaded with talent, including three Division I recruits in Deaysean Rippy, Marzett Geter, and Dontez Ford. Rippy has over ten Division I offers, but has yet to declare. Geter and Ford have already committed to Pitt and Syracuse, respectively. When these two met last season, Sto-Rox held Neshannock scoreless, 14-0. Since then, the Lancers have gotten bigger, faster, and stronger. Chick’s Picks still likes the experience of the Vikings in this one…Sto-Rox over Neshannock.
