District College Football Recap – 10/23/2011

Some great action in Week 8 of the college football slate. Slippery Rock remains on top of the PSAC West and sends Lock Haven into the conference history books. Wins by Cal and IUP set up the Coal Bowl next week, both teams are still alive for NCAA playoff berths. Thomas More continues to roll in the PAC and Westminster continues to win, setting up a battle with the Saints next week in New Wilmington.

Here are recaps of all the games, including two heard here on the Network:

Slippery Rock 48 – Lock Haven 27
Cody Endres threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns, Devin Goda also set a school record with four touchdown catches, as the 22nd ranked Rock maintained their grip on first place in the PSAC West and handed Lock Haven their 39th consecutive loss, tying Cheyney for the longest losing streak in the PSAC. The streak is also the longest current streak on any level in NCAA football.

The Rock led 3-0 in the first quarter, Kurt Brackman finished a twelve play drive with a 31 yard field goal. SRU added to the lead on the third play of the second quarter, Endres connected with Goda for their first touchdown, a 38 yard pass, Brackman tacked on a 26 yard field goal later in the quarter and SRU led 13-0 at the half.

SRU got the football to start the third quarter, Endres led the offense down the field in seven plays, hitting Goda for 21 yards and a touchdown to put the Rock up 20-0. Endres was not done in the quarter, finding Mike Bongivengo for a 40 yard touchdown, Zach Sheridan recovered a Jarryd Burkett fumble one play later, setting up Endres to Bongivengo again from 33 yards and a score. Jarred Kratzer entered at quarterback for the Bald Eagles and led a 60 yard scoring drive, including a seven yard touchdown pass to Jay Hartman.

Jared Buck took over at quarterback for the Rock, he got into the act, hitting Goda with a 43 yard touchdown, Kratzer answered with another touchdown pass to Hartman, this time from six yards. Buck ran for 44 yards on the next possession, setting up a 32 yard touchdown pass to Goda. Lock Haven scored twice more, first on a punt block by Ian Smith, returned for a touchdown and a Kratzer touchdown pass to James Livelsberger with 32 seconds left.

Endres was 23 of 31 throwing the football, with just one interception after throwing four last week. Buck was 4 of 4 for 91 yards and two scores. Goda caught nine passes for 225 yards, also a school record. Slippery Rock is now 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the PSAC West.

Kratzer was 15 of 20 for 157 yards. Hartman had ten catches for 97 yards. Lock Haven is now 0-7 on the season.

W & J 24 – Geneva 7
The Presidents trailed by a point at the half, but sent the homecoming crowd at Cameron Stadium home happy, rallying in the second half. Tim McNerney ran for 150 yards on 26 carries and two scores to give W & J the win.

It started great for the Presidents, taking the opening kickoff and marching to the Geneva 17, but Matt Bliss fumbled, Dan Dilman recovered for Geneva to stall the drive. W & J moved down the field at the end of the quarter to the Geneva 7, but a holding penalty pushed the Presidents back, and they turned the ball over on downs at the 8.

Geneva used a thirteen play drive to take the lead, with the running of Rocco Colavecchia and the passing of Zack Hayward, throwing to Corey O’Patchen for a twelve yard touchdown with 2:47 remaining in the half. W & J took just 1:30 to answer, Bliss scoring on a six yard run, but the extra point was no good, giving the GT’s a 7-6 lead at the break.

McNerney scored his first touchdown with 7:11 left in the third quarter on a 15 yard run, Bliss threw to Alex Baroffio for the two-pointer and a 14-7 Presidents lead. A. J Delmonico fumbled one play later, setting W & J up at their own 37. Eric Eberle booted a 26 yard field goal and a 17-7 advantage.

McNerney added his second score on a 18 yard run with 7:19 remaining  to put the game away. Bliss was 21 of 29 throwing for 164 yards, he ran for 92 yards on 16 carries. The Presidents are now 4-3 overall, 3-2 in the PAC.

Geneva was led by Colavecchia with 75 yards on 15 carries, he was 3 of 14 passing. Hayward was 6 of 8 for 114 yards. Geneva is now 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Bryant 34 – Robert Morris 27
Jordan Harris blocked a punt with 1:16 left and Jordan Brown scored on a ten yard run as the Bulldogs go to 5-3 overall.

Brown kicked off the scoring with a 49 yard run in the first, Robert Morris took the lead back in the second on a Jeff Sinclair 12 yard touchdown pass to Shadrae King. Mike Croce put Bryant out front again with a 34 yard pass to Harris. Robert Morris got two scores before the break, Sinclair to Anthony Coleman for 16 yards and Greg Langer kicked his second field goal of the night for a 20-13 Colonials lead.

Matt Tracey knotted the game up with a seven yard touchdown pass from Croce in the third quarter. The score stayed tied until just under seven minutes to play, Jaime Cobb scored on a 14 yard pass from Sinclair to put RMU back up 27-20. Croce went to Tracey for 13 yards with 3:16 left to tie the game, setting up the blocked punt and go ahead score.

Croce was 20 of 28 for 249 yards, Tracey had eight catches for 92 yards. Brown ran for 179 yards on 22 carries. The Bulldogs are 3-2 in the NEC.

Sinclair was 20 of 42 for 227 yards, King caught six passes for 48 yards, he has now caught a pass in 26 straight games. Robert Morris falls to 2-5 overall, 2-2 in conference play.

Duquesne 37 – Wagner 21
Larry McCoy ran for three touchdowns and Sean Patterson threw for two more as the Dukes are now 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the NEC.

The Seahawks have dropped six straight games, they led 7-0 on a Nick Doscher 18 yard pass to Dominique Williams in the first quarter. Duquense answered with the next 31 points. Patterson connected with Connor Dixon for two touchdowns, Dixon has now caught a pass in 23 straight games. Charlie Leventry kicked a 51 yard field goal with no time remaining in the half to give the Dukes a 17-7 lead at the break.

It was more of the same in the third quarter, McCoy scored on 3 and 29 yard runs, before Doscher went in on a yard run. McCoy scored his final touchdown on a one yard plunge. Doscher hit Wandy Santilien with a 62 yard touchdown to end the scoring.

McCoy ran for 149 yards on 26 carries. Patterson was 25 of 35 for 264 yards. Issac Spragg had nine catches, Dixon made eight.

Doscher was only 9 of 21, Williams ran for 81 yards on 20 carries. Wagner is 1-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Youngstown State 49 – Saint Francis 23
Jamaine Cook ran for 162 yards and four touchdowns as the Penguins won at the Ice Castle. Jordan Thompson scored on a school record 95 yard run in the fourth quarter, Kurt Hess threw for 172 yards, including a touchdown pass to Christian Bryan as YSU led 42-3 at the half. The Penguins are 4-3 overall. 

John Kelly threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns for the Red Flash, now 1-7 overall. Kelly also ran for a score. 

Edinboro 21 – Clarion 10
Cody Harris threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as the Fighting Scots go to 6-2 overall. Harris opened the scoring with a two yard run on the first drive of the game. He tossed a 32 yard td pass to David Bostic for a 14-0 lead after one.

Tyler Ruark got Clarion on the board with a 34 yard field goal. Both teams scored in the final ninety seconds of the half. Harris to D’Mar Jeter from 25 yards, Patrick Graham-Murphy ran in from four yards out for Clarion. There was no scoring in the second half.

Harris was 19 of 23 for 203 yards, he was sacked five times. The Fighting Scots are now 3-2 in the PSAC West.

Graham-Murphy, in his first NCAA start, ran for 174 yards on 20 carries. Ben Fiscus ran for 61 yards, but only threw for 39. Clarion falls to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the PSAC West.

California 32 – Mercyhurst 26  in overtime
The Vulcans tied the game in the final thirty seconds of regulation, then picked up the overtime win to keep hopes of an NCAA bid alive. Cal is now 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC West, the Vulcans have won 16 straight divisional games at Adamson Stadium.

Mercyhurst had a chance to open the scoring, Steven Wakefield missed a 39 yard field goal. Cal drove to the Mercyhurst 18, but Peter Lalich was intercepted by Colin Kimball. The Lakers took advantage of a Cal fumble, Anthony Vendemia hit R.J. Miller for a 13 yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Mercyhurst made it 10-0 on the first drive of the second, Wakefield hit a 21 yard field goal. Mario Washington set up Cal with great field possession, Cody Nuzzo missed a 36 yard field goal attempt. Rontez Miles intercepted a Vendemia pass, setting up a Lalich 26 yard touchdown to Thomas Mayo with 2:23 left in the half. The Lakers added a 19 yard field goal from Wakefield to lead 13-7 at the break.

Cal took the opening drive of the second half down the field, Jeff Knox scoring from a yard out to give Cal the lead for the first time. Ja’Wan Bryant returned a blocked punt twelve yards for a touchdown and the Vulcans led 20-13. Mercyhurst tied the game on an Allen Jones ten yard score with just over three minutes left in the third quarter.

After the Vulcans turned the ball over on downs, the Lakers went right down the field, Richie Sanders scoring from one yard to give the Lakers a six point lead. Cal took over with 3:25 left in regulation, Lalich moved the team 63 yards in ten plays, with 27 seconds left, he hit Blake Williamson for the touchdown, Nuzzo missed the extra point, forcing overtime.

Cal elected to play defense first, Brian Justice intercepted Vendemia in the end zone, giving Cal the ball. Knox went in on the fourth play for the Vulcans on a four yard run. Lalich threw for 284 yards on 25 of 35, Mayo had nine catches for 116 yards.

Vendemia was 23 of 38 for 235, he was picked off three times. Trevor Kennedy had nine catches for 104 yards, the Lakers fall to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the division.

IUP 35 – Gannon 7
IUP picked up the 499th win in school history at George P. Miller Stadium. Harvie Tuck ran for two scores and Pat Smith ran for one and threw for two more as IUP racked up 428 yards of offense on the afternoon.

IUP led 14-0 after one, Tuck scored on a two yard run, Smith added a seven yard run. That score stayed the same until late in the third quarter, Tuck went in from 33 yards out.

Daniel Tapscott returned at quarterback for Gannon and threw a seven yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Coleman with 6:05 to go in the fourth to make it 21-7. Smith put the game away with a 59 yard pass to Javon Rowen 16 seconds later, then connected to Par Brewer for 73 yards to end the scoring.

Tuck was held to 72 yards on 17 carries. Smith was 10 of 15 for 225 yards passing, Rowan had four catches for 111 yards. The IUP defense forced four turnovers, going to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC West.

Tapscott was 21 of 38 for 188 yards, Gannon falls to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the division.

Fairmont State 38 – Seton Hill 20
The Falcons go to 6-2 overall with the win at Offut Field. Daniel Monroe ran for 139 yards and a touchdown. Seton Hill remains winless on the season.

Fairmont State led 17-6 at the half, keyed by a Logan Moore 31 yard touchdown pass to Matt Wilmer and a Ryland Newman 76 yard punt return. Ryan Watts had a 25 yard Pick Six and Monroe scored on a yard run to put the Falcons up 31-6 with 13:45 remaining in the fourth.

Ryan Morris scored on a two yard run and Morris hit Jorge Valdovinos for a 56 yard touchdown with 5:16 left to cut the lead to 31-20, but Moore scored on a 27 yard run to end the threat.

Moore threw for 205 yards on 16 of 24, he was picked three times. Fairmont State is 3-2 in the WVIAC. Morris was 24 of 49 for 343 yards for the Griffins. Valdovinos had six catches for 152 yards, Seton Hill is 0-6 in conference play.

Thomas More 41 – Bethany 21
The sixth ranked Saints got two first quarter returns for touchdowns and never looked back in the win at Bank of Kentucky Stadium. Thomas More is now 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the PAC.

Bethany jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Matt Grimard three yard touchdown pass to Nico Irizarry, but Kendall Owens returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a score and Zach Autenrieb had a forty yard Pick Six and a 14-7 lead. Autenrieb picked off three passes on the day, setting a Saints record. Robert Kues hit Owens for a 76 yard touchdown on the final play of the quarter.

Kues threw another touchdown pass to Adam Rauch in the second, a 38 yard play. Domonique Hayden scored on a 38 yard run in the third to make it 35-7. Grimard connected with Daryl Powell for two touchdowns to cut lead to 35-21 with 7:40 remaining in regulation, but Owens scored his third touchdown of the day on a 48 yard run to end the threat.

Hayden carried 17 times for 119 yards. Kues was 7 of 15 for 149 yards. Grimard was 33 of 56 for 312 yards, he had three interceptions. Powell had thirteen catches for 151 yards, Bethany falls to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Westminster 48 – Thiel 21
The Titans used a 21 point second quarter to keep the Tomcats winless on the season. Westminster goes to 4-1 in the PAC, a game and a half behind Thomas More for first place, the Titans host the Saints next week.

John Proano staked the Titans to a first quarter lead with a 16 yard run. Shawn Lehocky threw three touchdown passes on the day, two to Geno Pasquinelli of 39 and 5 yards in the second quarter. Kortezz Martin and Kyle Allen both returned fumbles for scores and Tyler Banks added a five yard touchdown run.

Lehocky was 22 of 25 for 202 yards. Pasquinelli ended with seven catches for 99 yards Colin Wallace had six catches for the Titans, now 5-2 overall.

David Urey ran for a score and threw for two more for Thiel. Urey finished 11 of 21 for 135 yards. DeVon Drish ran for 124 yards on 24 carries. Thiel is now 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Grove City 21 – Saint Vincent 16
The Wolverines returned home for the first time in over a month and knocked off the Bearcats at Robert E. Thorn Field. Blaine Miller ran for 67 yards and two touchdowns for Grove City, now 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the PAC.

Saint Vincent took the early lead on a Aaron Smetanka one yard pass to Scott Weaver, Grove City answered in the second with a Miller two yard run to tie the game. The Wolverines took the lead for good with just over a minute left in the half, Brian Pell a 17 yard touchdown pass to Anthony Ritchie.

Miller added to the lead in the third with a nine yard scoring run, he also caught the two-pointer from Pell.
Saint Vincent added two score, Jarius Marlow on an 18 yard run, Grove City took an intentional safety with eleven seconds remaining. Pell finished 16 of 23 for 139 yards.

Smetanka was 17 of 32 for 158 yards with four sacks and also four interceptions. Kurt Devlin picked off three of those passes, that ties a Grove City single game record. Saint Vincent falls to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Wittenberg 27 – Carnegie Mellon 23
For the second straight year, the Tartans put a major scare into the nationally ranked Tigers, this time on their home field.

Wittenberg led 13-3 at the half, Sean Williams kicked two field goals of 40 and 41 yards and Ben Zoeller threw a 36 yard touchdown pass to Jeremy McKee. Dylan Munoz kicked a 38 yard field goal with triple zeros on the clock for CMU.

Chris Garcia scored on a one yard run for the Tartans to cut the Tiger lead to three. Zoeller threw his second touchdown pass of the day to Brendan Cunningham, a 31 yard strike to put the lead back to ten. Reed Florence went in at quarterback for the 23rd ranked Tigers and hooked up with McKee for a ten yard touchdown.

Patrick Blanks scored with a six yard run, Garcia scored his second touchdown on a yard run with 3:48 remaining. CMU did not get the ball back, the Tigers offense ran out the remaining time to pick up the win.

Wittenberg is now 7-1 overall, Connor Warye ran for 115 yards. Zoeller threw for 227 yards before checking out. McKee had six catches for 108 yards.

Garcia had 64 yards rushing to go with his pair of scores. Rob Kalkstein struggled, throwing for just 105 yards on 7 of 17, with two interceptions. The Tartans are now 4-3 overall.
