District College Football Recap for Saturday October 20

Some great games this weekend on the local college football slate, Waynesburg holds on to their unbeaten record, an overtime thriller in the PSAC and could Lock Haven actually win a game for the first time in 50 tries.

Here are recaps of all the games:

Slippery Rock 38 – Edinboro 31 in overtime
Nigel Barksdale hit LaQuinn Stephens-Howling for a touchdown in the first overtime, the Rock defense held and Slippery Rock send the crowd home happy on Homcoming Day at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium with the win. The Rock defense did the job when it had to all day, sacking Edinboro QB Cody Harris 9 times.

Barksdale and Stephens-Howling hooked up for the first score of the game, a 42 yard touchdown on the game's opening drive, both teams exchanged field goals before Barksdale put the Rock up 16-3 on a 2 yard td pass to Josh Gardner. Edinboro could not score at the end of the half, Cody Harris hit Ben Eisel to the Rock 2, but did not have a timeout to stop the clock and the half ended.
 

Harris made up for that to start the third, finding Marcus Johnson for a 54 yard touchdown on the fifth play of the half. Harris hit Willie Lowe for a 66 yard gainer, but the Fighting Scots turned the ball over on downs at the Rock 12. Edinboro took the lead when Braden Williams blocked a James McCombie punt, Brian Davis scored from 1 yard out and the Fighting Scots led 17-16. Barksdale gave SRU back the lead with a 4 yard run, Jimmy Zubik tacked on the 2-pointer and SRU led 24-17. But the Fighting Scots were not done in the quarter, Harris hit Eisel for a big gainer, Harris scored from 5 out and it was 24-all going to the 4th.
 

It was the Rock's turn for a big play, Barksdale to Ken Amos for 61 yards, Brett Crenshaw scored on a 3 yard run, the Rock took back the lead. Harris tied the game with 7:44 remaining on a 2 yard run, capping a 13 play drive. The Fighting Scots had a chance to take the lead after a Kyle Matula interception, but Sean Seefeldt missed a 22 yard field goal, that forced overtime.
 

The Rock had the ball first, Barksdale hit Stephens-Howling for the 25 yard touchdown on 3rd and 10. Harris threw an incompletion on the first play, was sacked on the second and threw two imcompletions to end the game and give the Rock the win. Barksdale was 15-30 for 239 yards, he also ran for 96 yards on 30 carries. SRU is now 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC West.
 

Harris was 21-45 for 379 yards, the Fighting Scots are now 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the West.
 

Waynesburg 21 – Geneva 20
The Yellow Jackets survived an upset bid by the Golden Tornadoes. Bryan Visingardi's 45 yard field goal attempt was short on the final play of the game as Waynesburg remains unbeaten on the season and on top of the PAC standings.

Waynesburg took the lead in the first quarter on their opening possession, going 12 plays and 60 yards, Betrand Ngampa scoring from 11 yards out to put the Yellow Jackets up 7-0. Geneva answered less than a minute later, Zach Hayward hooked up with Corey O'Patchen for a 78 yard bomb to set up a 6 yard touchdown pass to Rocco Colavecchia and the game was tied at 7.
 

Geneva took the lead in the second, Colavecchia came in to run the wildcat, he ran 5 times and completed 2 passes to move the GT's down the field, Colavecchia scoring on a 1 yard run, but Visingardi's extra point was blocked by Brandon Fedorka, that played a huge part in the game.
 

Waynesburg took the opening drive of the 3rd quarter and took the lead using the tag team running combination of Dominic Moore and Ngampa, Moore scored from 2 out, the extra point put Waynesburg up 14-13. As they did in the first half, Geneva answered, going 77 yards in 11 plays, Hayward to O'Patchen for the 13 yard touchdown and a 20-14 lead. The Yellow Jackets drove down the field, but decided to go for it on 4th and 1 at the Geneva 8, Moore was stopped for no gain by Dillon Goodell, denying an opportunity for the Yellow Jackets.
 

Goodell ended another Waynesburg drive in the fourth, he picked off Carter Hill with 8:53 remaining at the Geneva 32. The Golden Tornadoes made a huge mistake, on 4th and 1 at the Geneva 41, Colavecchia was stopped for no gain, giving Waynesburg a short field for the possible tying score.
 

It took the Yellow Jackets just 4 plays to hit paydirt, Carter Hill to Mike Ferraro for an 8 yard touchdown, the extra point gave Waynesburg the lead with 5:30 remaining. Geneva moved down the field to the Yellow Jacket 29, but Colavecchia was intercepted by Ryan Harr at the 2 with 1:46 left. Geneva had only 1 timeout remaining and it was time for a questionable decision from Waynesburg, pinned deep in their own territory, Hill threw an incomplete pass to stop the clock, Geneva got a 3rd down stop and used their timeout to get the ball back.
 

At the Waynesburg 39, Colavecchia operated out of the wildcat and was able to get the Golden Tornadoes to the 27, but Visingardi's kick was short and the Yellow Jackets held on.
 

Ngampa ran 24 times for 120 yards to lead Waynesburg, now 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the PAC. The Yellow Jackets could move into the top 25 with the win.
 

Colavecchia ran for 92 yards, threw for 41 and had 7 catches for 60 yards. Hayward was 23-40 for 231 yards, O'Patchen had 7 catches for 141 yards. Geneva falls to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the PAC.
 

W & J 40 – Saint Vincent 14
The Presidents clinch their 29th consecutive winning season with the Homecoming victory at Cameron Stadium. That is the fifth longest active streak in all of NCAA football. Dion Wiegand ran for 168 yards and blocked a punt in the win.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Presidents notched a 36 yard field goal by Eric Eberle to go up 3-0 early in the second. Matt Bliss added a 5 yard touchdown on the next possession and a 15 yard score for a 17-0 lead at the half.
 

Shane Smith recovered a fumble on the second half kickoff to set up the W & J offense, Bliss hit B Trefelner for an 8 yard touchdown and the rout was on. But no one told the Bearcats that, taking just 4 plays to score, Ryan Crawford went in from 2 yards out. W & J looked to answer, driving to the 8 but D.W. Brown stepped in front of a Bliss pass and went 97 yards for a Pick 6 and the score was 24-14.
 

Following a good kickoff return, Smith entered the game at quarterback and threw a td pass to Dan Lucas for a 32 yard score, Smith scored on a yard run on the next possession and the Presidents were back up 38-14. Wiegand blocked a punt for a safety in the fourth for the final two points.

In addition to Wiegand's big day, Smith ran for 115 yards on 17 carries. Bliss added 155 yards passing and 61 yards rushing before leaving the game. W & J is now 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the PAC, one game back of Waynesburg for the top spot. Saint Vincent falls to 0-7 overall.
 

Robert Morris 37 – Central Connecticut State 31
The Colonials scored the final 15 points to pick up their 2nd win of the season and 1st in NEC play. Jeff Sinclair hit Dontae Jeter for a 24 yard touchdown, he found Deontae Howard for a 2 point conversion. Howard scored on a 1 yard run to give RMU the lead with 1:50 left, but the Colonials had to survive a final drive, Andrew Clements got the Blue Devils to the RMU 13 before throwing 3 straight incompletions to end the game.

Ryan Thermil opened the scoring for RMU with a 1 yard run in the first, Darius Lee scored on a 3 yard run in the second. Thermil added another yard run, but Clements hit Matthew Tyrill for a 75 yard touchdown to tie game at 14 at the half.
 

RMU led 23-14 in the third, Greg Langer kicked a 38 yard field goal and Sinclair connected with Jeter for a 57 yard touchdown. Rob Holloman ran back the ensuing kickoff 96 yards and Clements hit Anthony Julbes for a 6 yard touchdown to make it 28-23 after three, CCSU with the lead, the Blue Devils added an early 4th quarter field goal before the fun began for RMU in the 4th.
 

Sinclair was 15-27 for 214 yards, Jeter had 4 catches for 106 yards, Evan Taylor carried 20 times for 106 yards for the Colonials, now 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the NEC.
 

Hollomon ran 27 times for 208 yards, Clements threw for 173 yards. CCSU is now 1-6 and also 1-3 in the NEC.
 

Duquesne 35 – Sacred Heart 3
Sean Patterson figured in on 5 Dukes scores and Larry McCoy returned to the lineup as the Dukes cruised to the win at Rooney Field.

Patterson was 10-19 for 156 yards passing, he ran for 71 yards. He scored on a 14 yard run in the second and hit Gianni Carter for a 44 yard touchdown and a 14-3 halftime lead.
 

Patterson scored on runs of 15 and 44 yards, he tossed another td pass to Carter for 12 yards to round out the scoring. McCoy carried 22 times for 93 yards for the Dukes, now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the NEC.
 

Sacred Heart mananged just 92 yards on the ground as a team, the Pioneers fall to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
 

Wagner 31 – Saint Francis 24
Nick Doscher threw for 3 touchdowns as the Seahawks pick up the road win in Loretto on Saturday and go to 4-1 in NEC play.

Domonique Williams scored on a 10 yard run in the first for Wagner, John Kelly hit A.J. Alexander for a 60 yard touchdown to tie the game in the second. Doscher hit David Crawford for a 28 yard touchdown, the teams traded field goals and Wagner led 17-10 at the half.
 

Doscher connected with Williams for a 7 yard touchdown in the third, Keion Wade answered with a 12 yard run for the Red Flash. Doscher found Darnell Sapps for a 12 yard touchdown late in the 3rd for a 31-17 lead after 3.
 

Kelly scored on a 7 yard run with 11:30 left, he would lead the Red Flash on a drive late, but Kelly was intercepted to end the game and Wagner got out with the win. Doscher was 12-17 for 163 yards, Willams ran for 93 yards, Wagner is now 4-3 overall.
 

Kelly ran for 110 yards on 20 carries, Wade added 79 yards, Kelly threw for 157. The Red Flash are now 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the NEC.
 

IUP 31 – Mercyhurst 13
The Crimson Hawks posted 24 second half points and Harvie Tuck ran for 231 yards and 2 scores as #20 IUP sets up for a possible NCAA playoff berth and a chance for the PSAC West title with the win at George P. Miller Stadium.

Mercyhurst, which had won 6 straight and were 4-0 entering the game in the West, led 13-7 at the break. Brandon Brown-Dukes scored on a 1 yard run in the first quarter, Tuck scored on a 21 yard run also in the first and Anthony Vendemia scampered in for a 4 yard touchdown on the opening play of the second.
 

It was all IUP in the second half, Mike Box hit Terrill Barnes for a 42 yard touchdown, De'Antwan  Williams scored on a 40 yard run in the 4th, Tuck added a 20 yard run late for the final margin of victory. IUP is now 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the division, however IUP fell to Cal, who is on top with a 5-0 record earlier this season.
 

Brown-Dukes ran for 134 yards on 30 carries for the Lakers, now 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the division.
 

Clarion 30 – Lock Haven 28
It just wasn't meant to be for the Bald Eagles, who scored with 1:26 remaining to take the lead but Ben Fiscus hit Anthony Becoate on the game's final play to hand Lock Haven their 50th consecutive loss. Jarret Kratzer hit Jesse Hoover for a 22 yard touchdown and a 28-24 lead, but Fiscus would not be denied, finding the Clarion tight end for a 3 yard score and the win.

The day started off great for the Bald Eagles, Bernard Smack returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, Fiscus tied the game with an 11 yard touchdown pass to Becoate. Clarion took a 17-7 lead in the second on a field goal and a Fiscus 17 yard touchdown pass to Rob Irwin, but Kratzer hooked up with Hoover for a 60 yard bomb and Clarion led 17-14 at the half.
 

Travis Day scored on a 31 yard run for the Golden Eagles in the third, Kratzer tossed a td pass to Ian Smith for 18 yards, setting up the wild finish. Fiscus finished 26-42 for 324 yards and 3 touchdowns, Clarion is now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in divisional play. Kratzer was 14-24 for 267 yards, Lock Haven falls to 0-8.
 

California 41 – Gannon 0
The 14th ranked Vulcans cruised to the easy win at Tullio Field in Erie and take over sole possession of first place in the PSAC West with the win and the Mercyhurst loss.

Leading 6-0 in the second on a pair of Cody Nuzzo field goals, Jeff Knox scored on a 3 yard run and Darnell Harding scooped up a fumble and took it 32 yards for a touchdown and a 20-0 halftime lead.
 

Knox added a 23 yard run, Cody Cook scored on a 2 yard run and Jake Forsythe scored late with a 14 yard run to close out the scoring. Lamont Smith ran for 96 yards, Cook added 74 on the ground. Cody Schroeder started for the 2nd straight week for Peter Lalich and threw for 119 yards on 15-34. Cal is now 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the PSAC West.
 

Gannon falls to 1-7 overall, losers of 7 straight and 0-5 in the division. The Golden Knights were held to just 11 yards rushing and 164 total yards for the game.
 

Thomas More 27 – Grove City 0
The Saints held the ball for over 37 minutes and shut down the Wolverines rushing attack for the road win. Zach Autenrieb set a D-III record with his 30th career interception, he set the record in a big way, taking the pick 100 yards for a touchdown for the only score of the first half, he would add another pick along the way.

Leading 10-0 in the third, the Saints took over the game, Jensen Gebhardt hit Cody Hinkle for a 6 yard touchdown, Gebhardt also connected with Goose Cohern for a 19 yard score early in the fourth.
 

Gebhardt was 20-28 for 207 yards in the win, Thomas More is now 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the PAC. Shane Kaclik, the PAC's leading rusher was held to 62 yards on 22 carries, Grove City falls to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
 

Westminster 45 – Bethany 28
Tyler Banks ran for 195 yards and Dak Britt added 160 yards rushing as the Titan run game grounded out a victory at Harold Burry Stadium on Saturday.

Bethany led 7-3 on the second on a Phil Acrie 5 yard run, but Britt hit Gino Pasquinelli for a 10 yard touchdown in the final minute of the half to give Westminster a 10-7 lead at the break.
 

Britt scored on a 74 yard run on the second play of the third quarter, he hit Connor Kobis for a 5 yard touchdown on the next possession for a 24-7 lead and the Titans were cruising.
 

Ed Holmes got the Bison back on the board with a 5 yard run, capping a 12 play drive on the first play of the final quarter. Britt went 52 yards 2 plays later, Bethany answered 3 plays after that with a Matt Grimard 55 yard td to Eric Blinn to cut the Westminster lead to 31-21.
 

Grimard hit Holmes for a 9 yard touchdown with 6:03 remaining to make 31-28, but Banks took over with td runs of 51 and 35 yards to end the game. Westminster moves to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the PAC.
 

Grimard threw for 357 yards on 26-48, Blinn had 10 catches for 168 yards, Johnathan Foster also had 10 catches on the day. The Bison fall to 1-6 and 1-4 in conference play.
 

Fairmont State 54 – Seton Hill 47
The Falcons hold on for the home win. Bobby Vega hit Matt Wilmer for a 19 yard touchdown for the final score. Vega threw for 245 yards and 3 scores. Daniel Monroe ran for 136 yards and 3 touchdowns, he had 103 yards receiving.
 

FSU jumped out to a 20-0 lead but could not hold it. It was 27-16 at the half, Seton Hill recovered an onside kick to start the second half and scored on a Lance Williams td catch to make it 27-24.
 

Fairmont State scored the next 20 points to put the game out of reach, or so the Falcons thought. Seton Hill scored 23 points in just under 4 minutes. Andrew Jackson tossed a td pass, one of 3 on the day, Jonnathon Fegin scooped up a fumble and returned it 63 yards for a score, Chris Kish could not handle a punt snap and Darius Turner turned it into a Griffins touchdown. The two-pointer made it 47 all with 8:36 remaining. Vega found Wilmer with 100 seconds to play for the win.

Fairmont State is now 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the WVIAC.
 

Jackson threw for 432 yards on 32-61 but was picked 4 times.   Seton Hill falls to 0-8 and has dropped 10 straight games.
 

Wittenberg 35 – Allegheny 6
The 23rd ranked Tigers put an end to the Gators hopes of winning an NCAC title with the win in Meadville. Reed Florence ran for one touchdown and threw for 2 more to stake Wittenberg to a 21-0 third quarter lead, the Tigers did not look back.
 

Jimmy Dehnke and JaVanh Sanders added 1 yard runs, the Gators got a 4th quarter score from Ben Tarcson on a 6 yard pass from Joe Dawida.
 

Florence threw for 263 yards, he ran for 99 in the win, Wittenberg is now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC. Allegheny falls to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
 

Ohio Wesleyan 34 – Carnegie Mellon 26
Mason Espinosa threw 2 fourth quarter touchdown passed to Calvin Cagney of 5 and 40 yards as Ohio Wesleyan comes back to beat the Tartans at Gesling Stadium.

CMU jumped out to a 13-0 lead on a Rob Kalkstein 2 yard td pass to Bryce Pardoe and a Zachery Erra-Hernandez 1 yard run. Espinosa connect with Cagney for their first score of the game on a 5 yard pass, OWU took the lead in the second on a Espinosa pass play to Steven Uhler for 8 yards, a field goal made it 17-13 at the half.
 

That score held until the fourth quarter, Erra-Hernandez scored on a yard run, Lian McGrath returned an interception 34 yards to put the Tartans up 26-17. Miles McKensie kicked his 2nd field goal, then Espinosa to Cagney took over for the win.
 

Espinosa was 43-65 for 415 yards, Cagney had 16 catches for 151 yards. The Battling Bishops are now 7-0
 

Kalkstein was 17-30 for 162 yards, Tim Kitka had 8 catches. CMU falls to 5-2.
