District College Football Recap for Saturday, September 13th

Week 2 of the local college football slate saw a fall weather pattern hit the area, even though it’s still summer for another week or two. W & J traveled to New Wilmington where the Presidents have dominated that series in years past and Geneva looked to start their home slate strong with a win. 

Here are recaps of ALL the games, including two that were heard on the Network: 

W & J 56 – Westminster 21
Playing under the lights at Burry Stadium has not been a good thing for the Titans this season, suffering their second straight loss. W & J claimed their 14th straight win over Westminster and leads the all-time series 34-2.

The Presidents led 21-0 at the half as Ryan Ruffing scored three more touchdowns on a 26 yard pass from Pete Coughlin and runs of 2 and 1 yard. Coughlin added to the lead in the third with a 2 yard scamper. Jametruis Bentley returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to get Westminster on the board, the Titans got a Dominique McKinley 53 yard run to make it 28-14. But Ruffing scored his fourth of the game on another 1 yard run with 4:08 remaining in the period.

Leading 35-14, Ruffing scored a fifth touchdown with 10 ½ minutes remaining in regulation. Bentley caught a 74 yard touchdown pass from Brandon Heeter to make it 42-21. The Presidents got late touchdowns from David Kincaid on a 26 yard run and Asa Costelnock on a 13 yard pass from Kevin Mechas to close out the scoring.

W & J is now 2-0, Ruffing carried 36 times for 172 yards, he has 10 touchdowns on the season. Coughlin was 24-35 for 281 and the two scores. Daniel Lis had 8 catches, Max Creighan had 7 for the Presidents. McKinley carried 10 times for 79 yards for Westminster, now 0-2. 

Geneva 42 – Grove City 0
The Golden Tornadoes used a 21 point second quarter on the win to their first win of the season at Reeves Field. Aaron Channing threw for 257 yards and 3 scores in the win.

Channing opened the scoring when he hit former Laurel star Dylan Jones for a 24 yard touchdown, it was Jones’ third touchdown of the year. Early in the second, it was Josh Guiser’s turn to catch a 45 yard scoring pass from Channing. Brandon Hacker and Ryan Mosura scored on runs of 2 and 8 yards to put Geneva up 28-0 at the break.

Channing hit Guiser for a 7 yard touchdown in the third, Hacker scored on a 33 yard run in the fourth. Channing was 24 of 28 on the night. Lemuel Fuller had 7 catches, Zach Taylor 6 and Guiser 5, Geneva is now 1-1.

Grove City managed just 73 yards rushing and 219 yards of total offense. Josh Peach was 11-20 for 66 yards before being replaced by Aaron Lundmark. The Wolverines fall to 0-2.

Duquesne 33 – Dayton 13
The Dukes won their sixth straight home game  at Rooney Field on Saturday night.

Duquesne took a 9-3 lead on the first play of the second quarter on a Ryan Ho 4 yard run. Malik Shegog returned an interception 75 yards and Devin Rahming had an 84 yard punt return as the Dukes cruised to a 23-6 lead at the break.

Connor Kacsor scored on a 7 yard run for the Flyers, Dillon Buechel hit Noel Oduho for a 58 yard touchdown in the third, Austin Crimmons kicked his second field goal of the game to close out the scoring.

Buechel was 19-28 for 218 yards, Chavas Rawlings had 5 catches on the day. Duquesne is now 1-2 with the win. Kacsor carried 20 times for 84 yards for Dayton, now 1-1.

Layfayette 50 – Robert Morris 3
The defending Patriot League champions smoked the Colonials on Saturday in Easton. Drew Reed ran for a score and threw for two more and the Leopards got interception returns from Jared Roberts and Mark Dodd to add to the scoreboard.

RMU had only four first downs and 108 yards of offense. Lafayette is now 1-1, Robert Morris falls to 0-3.

James Madison 38 – Saint Francis 22
Khairi Dickson carried the ball a career high 39 times for 216 yards but it was not enough as James Madison held on for the win. Dickson entered the game as the leading rusher in the FCS and did not hurt his status, he has gone over 200 yards twice this season.

James Moreland started the scoring with a 43 yard Pick 6 for JMU, Dickson scored on a 1 yard run and Marcus Bagley added a 4 yard scamper as the Red Flash led 15-7 after one quarter. Vad Lee hit Dee Brown with touchdown passes of 4 and 5 yards, the Dukes added a field goal for a 24-15 advantage.

Zack Drayer made his first NCAA start and tossed a 30 yard touchdown pass to Anthony Abeid in the third, but Lee answered with a 76 yard run. James Latney scored on a 2 yard run to end the scoring.

Lee carried 18 times for 174 yards, Latney 16 for 106. James Madison is now 2-1. The Red Flash fall to 1-2 and head to face their second ranked opponent of the season as Saint Francis travels to Youngstown State next Saturday night.

Shippensburg 47 – Edinboro 21
The Red Raiders trailed 7-0 after one quarter but scored 33 unanswered points on the way to the win at Seth Grove Stadium. Blair Brooks ran for two scores and Trevor Harman caught two td passes. Brian Sourber added a 48 yard interception return in the third to add to the scoring. Cody Harris threw for two scores and ran for another for the Fighting Scots.

Chris Lawshe threw for two scores and Ryan Zapoticky one for the Red Raiders. Brooks carried 18 times for 170 yards. Harman had 12 catches for 133 yards, Shippensburg is now 2-0.

Edinboro falls to 0-2, Harris was 29-36 for 300 yards, Darren Massey had 11 catches for 161 yards.

West Chester 38 – Mercyhurst 14
West Chester lived up to their #9 ranking in the AFCA poll this week, jumping out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and never looking back in the home win. Sean McCartney ran for a score and threw for three more in the win, two of those td passes going to Tim Brown.

Drew Formica added a 39 yard interception return for West Chester, now 2-0. Michael Foster returned a fumble 43 yards for a touchdown to get the Lakers on the board. Brendan Boylan threw a 34 yard touchdown pass to Jaquan Williams in the fourth for Mercyhurst, now 0-2.

McCartney threw for 306 yards on 23 of 35, Adam Dempsey had 6 catches, Brown 5 for West Chester.

Gannon 48 – Cheyney 0
The Golden Knights racked a 35-0 halftime lead in handing the Wolves their 23rd consecutive loss. Brock Jones ran for 111 yards and four scores on 25 carries. Tyler Johnson carried 19 times for 110 yards and two scores. Liam Nadler only threw 8 passes but did toss a touchdown. The Gannon defense held Cheyney to just 6 first downs and 48 yards of offense as the Golden Knights go to 2-0.

Kutztown 44 – IUP 6
The Golden Bears handed the 20th ranked Crimson Hawks at home, beating IUP for the first time in 11 meetings. Chad Barton hit Anthony Kelly four times for touchdowns, Barton added a td toss to Tyler Redding in the fourth.

IUP’s only score came in the second quarter as Luigi Lista-Brinza scored on a 1 yard run, giving the Crimson Hawks a 7-6 advantage. Barton was 27-42 for 316 yards, Kelly had 6 catches for 152 yards. IUP was held to 8 first downs and 176 yards of offense. Both teams are now 1-1 overall.

Bloomsburg 24 – California 21 in overtime
The #21 Huskies got a Braden Drexler 32 yard field goal to win it, after Cody Nuzzo tied the game on the final play with a 50 yard boot.

Cal led 3-0 after one on a Nuzzo 23 yard field goal. Bloomsburg got a defensive touchdown in the second on a Alex Dundore 4 yard fumble recovery. Eddie Mateo stretched the lead in the third on a 12 yard run. James Harris hit former Clairton star Desimon Green for a 1 yard touchdown to cut the Huskies lead to 14-10.

Mateo scored his second on a 4 yard run with 6:47 remaining, but Cal marched down the field, Harris 25 yards to Kowan Scott, the pair connected on the two-pointer as well to make it 21-18. Nuzzo’s field goal set up overtime and the Huskies were able to claim the win.

Mateo carried 24 times for 106 yards, the Huskies are 2-0. Harris was 24-34 for 252 yards, Scott had 3 catches for 82 yards, the Vulcans are now 1-1.

Seton Hill 27 – Lock Haven 18
The Griffens picked up the win at Hubert Jack Stadium, sending the Bald Eagles to 0-2. Khalil Howard scored on a 1 yard run and Malik Scott returned a punt 51 yards for a score to put Seton Hill 20-10 in the third quarter. Caleb Walton tossed two touchdown passes for Lock Haven, the second going 10 yards to Bean Swales, the Bald Eagles missed the two point conversion and could not get into the end zone again.

Seton Hill is now 1-1 with the win, Lock Haven falls to 0-2.

Clarion 55 – Millersville 16
Darrelle Carson and Connor Simmons each threw touchdown passes as the Golden Eagles got into the win column for the first time this year. Delrece Williams and Eric Frye each scored twice for Clarion, Frye had a short punt return for a score. Connor Scott returned an interception for a Pick 6 as Clarion goes to 1-1.

Matt Misley threw two touchdown passes for Millersville, now 0-2. Williams carried 15 times for 92 yards. Frye had 6 catches for 96 yards. Misley threw for 156 yards, he had one interception and was sacked 5 times.

Slippery Rock 56 – East Stroudsburg 24
The Rock again used huge offensive number to get the road win against the PSAC East foe.

Robert Healy staked ESU to a 7-0 lead in the first on a 19 yard run. Shamar Greene got the Rock on the board with a 17 yard burst. Zach Newsock tossed a 35 yard touchdown pass to Jaimire Dutrieuille to give SRU a 14-7 lead after one.

Teddy Blakeman racked up touchdown runs of 1 and 3 yards, leading 28-17 in the second, the Rock defense got into the act as Derek Fulmore returned an interception 22 yards for a score to allow SRU to pull away.

It was all the Rock in the second half, Blakeman scored on a 30 yard run, Brett Crenshaw added a 2 yard plunge and Newsock hit Julian Durden for a 13 yard touchdown. Matt Soltes found Jon Schnaars for a 14 yard touchdown to close the scoring.

Greene carried 18 times for 186 yards, Blakeman added 119 yards on 21 carries. SRU is now 2-0.

Soltes was 20-47 for 297, but he was intercepted 3 times, twice by Fulmore. Healy had 6 catches to lead the Warriors, now 1-1.

Bethany 45 – Thiel 24
The Bison scored 35 points in the second half after trailing 14-10 at the break for their first win of the season. Quarterback Brian Vales ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more as the Bison pulled away.

Vales was 19-23 for 167 yards, he also ran 23 times for 63 yards. Eric Blinn had 7 catches for 85 yards and a score. The Bison are now 1-1. For the Tomcats, quarterback Ryan Radke connected for 3 touchdowns, he was 14-22 for just 97 yards, Thiel is also 1-1.

Waynesburg 35 – Saint Vincent 24
Senior quarterback Carter Hill tossed a touchdown pass to Andrew English for 8 yards and sealed the win for the Yellow Jackets at Wiley Stadium on Saturday. The td pass came with just under 9 minutes to play and gave Waynesburg a two score lead. Hill threw for 225 yards and two scores, Jake Forsythe ran for 134 yards on 32 carries and a pair of touchdowns.

For the Bearcats, Shavonta Craft carried 22 times for 90 yards and two scores, Darius Brown returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score that gave Saint Vincent a 17-14 halftime lead. Waynesburg goes to 2-0 on the season, Saint Vincent falls to 0-2.
