District College Football Recap for Saturday, September 6th

As the weather changed yesterday afternoon and evening, it felt more like football weather. The local college football season kicked off some good matchups and a couple of come back wins for the area teams.
Here are recaps of ALL the games, including three heard here on the Network:
Slippery Rock 37 – Kutztown 26
It was not a good start for the Rock at Thompson-Mihalik Stadium, SRU fell behind 20-0 but the Rock rallied for 37 unanswered points and the opening night win. Shamar Greene ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
Kutztown opened the scoring on special teams as a bad punt snap led to a fumble and a Jarvis Cummings touchdown. Chad Barton made it 13-0, hitting Kodi Reed for a 24 yard score. After the defense picked off Rock QB Zach Newsock, Barton connected with Anthony Kelly for a 37 yard score and a 20-0 lead with 13:38 remaining in the second. The Rock got on the board with a Mike Wainauskis 27 yard field goal. Newsock hit Leroy McClain for a 19 yard touchdown and Wainauskis kicked another field goal in the final minute to make it 20-13 Kutztown at the break.
On the Rock’s first drive of the third quarter, Newsock got hot, hitting five consecutive passes and set up a Teddy Blakeman 26 yard touchdown run. SRU took the lead with 11:37 remaining in regulation on the third field goal by Wainauskis, then it was time for Greene to take over. Greene scored on runs of 58 and 53 yards to put the game out of reach. Barton hit Kelly for a 26 yard touchdown on the final play to close out the scoring.
Newsock was 25 of 48 for 289 yards, hitting eight different targets. Taishan Tucker led the Rock with six catches. Barton was 33 of 64 for Kutztown for 358 yards.
W & J 51 – Wooster 17
After falling behind 10-0, the Presidents rallied in a big way, rolling behind the running of Ryan Ruffing. The former Thomas Jefferson standout ran for 150 yards and five touchdowns as W & J cruised to it’s first win of the season.
Wooster claimed that lead in the first quarter, Darrian Owens took a 61 yard touchdown pass from Richard Barnes and Trevor Bowden added a 20 yard field goal. W & J got the offense going in the second as Micheal Giampole took a 12 yard pass from Pete Coughlin, capping a 10 play drive. Barnes connected with Owens again for a 29 yard touchdown to put Wooster back up by ten.
It was time for Ruffing to take center stage, he scored on a nine yard run to cut the deficit to three. Anthony Tutino picked off a Barnes pass and set up a Ruffing one yard run. Blake Davis extended the lead with a 32 yard field goal on the final play of the half.
It was all W & J in the third quarter. Ruffing scored his third touchdown on a seven yard run on the Presidents first possession. The junior added a two yard scoring run on the next drive and a five yard touchdown early in the fourth, ending a 15 play drive as the Presidents led 44-17.
David Kincaid finished the W & J scoring with a three yard touchdown with 3:42 to play. The Presidents had 321 yards rushing, Coughlin added 106 yards on 14 carries, he was 18-25 for 180 yards passing. For Wooster, Sean Hackel carried 27 times for 108 yards. Barnes was just 8-20 but threw for 183 yards. Owens had five catches for 157 yards.
Frostburg State 24 – Geneva 19
In a first quarter that saw a one hour lightning delay just 31 seconds into the contest, the Bobcats jumped out to a 17-0 lead and held on for the home win over the Golden Tornadoes.
On the first play following the delay, Ken Emmons went 66 yard for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Issac Robinson added a 29 yard field goal, Frostburg State forced a fumble on the first play of the drive, Emmons capitalized, hitting Haydan Roberts for a 25 yard touchdown and the big lead.
Geneva drove down to the Frostburg State 31 but turned the ball over on downs early in the second quarter. The teams traded interceptions to end the half. Robinson scored on a 29 yard run midway thru the third. It took the GT special teams to get on the scoreboard. Anthony Carthen took a punt 95 yards for a touchdown, Geneva trailed 24-6 going to the fourth.
Aaron Channing played most of the second half at quarterback for Geneva, he finished a long drive late in the game, hitting Dylan Jones for a 10 yard touchdown with 2:36 remaining. Geneva missed the two point conversion but Thomas Benyo recovered the onside kick, giving the GT’s another shot. Geneva was able to move the ball down field quickly, Jones scored on a one yard run with 1:03 left. A second onside kick attempt went out of bounds and the Bobcats were able to run out the clock.
Channing put a claim on the starting quarterback job, he was 20 of 37 for 192 yards. Jones was held to 40 yards on nine carries. Josh Guiser led the way with six catches. Emmons ran for 74 yards and threw for 143 to lead the Bobcats
Youngstown State 34 – Duquesne 23
The Penguins led 31-7 at the half but the Dukes fought back against the D-1 FCS foe at the Ice Castle on Saturday afternoon. Donte Nania threw for two scores and Martin Ruiz ran for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win.
Ruiz opened the scoring with a seven yard run. Nania hit Anthony Williams for a 54 yard score and Ruiz added a 46 yard run, all in the first quarter. In the second, it was Nania to Nate Adams for a 31 yard touchdown and a 28-0 lead. Duquesne struck with a Marcus Hughes 23 yard run, Joey Ceduo kicked a 34 yard field goal in the final minute to give YSU the big lead.
After the teams traded field goals in the third, Dillon Buechel found Chris King for a 64 yard touchdown, Buechel hit Devin Rahming for a 57 yard touchdown with 2:34 remaining in the game, but the Dukes could get no closer.
Buechel finished 25 of 44 for 347 yards. King had ten catches for 161 yards, Rahming eight for 119. YSU is now 1-1, Duquesne falls to 0-2.
Saint Francis 27 – Clarion 13
In Loretto, the Red Flash went to 1-1 on the young season, jumping out to a 21-0 halftime lead and held off a game Golden Eagles squad for the victory.
Khairi Dickson scored two touchdowns in the first 3:03 of the game, going in from 3 and 33 yards. Quarterback Max Ward scored on a 16 yard run in the final minute of the half to stake Saint Francis to the advantage.
Trailing 27-0 in the fourth, Clarion mounted a comeback. Delrece Williams found the end zone on an 11 yard run and Connor Simmons hit Mark Nicholas for an 8 yard touchdown with 8:23 left. The Golden Eagles could not find the end zone again and fall to 0-1.
Dickson carried 25 times for 148 yards. Simmons replaced Darelle Carson for Clarion and went 6 of 9 for 50 yards.
North Dakota 16 – Robert Morris 13
True freshman Ramesis Owens ran for 199 yards on 30 carries and a touchdown but it was not enough as the Colonials fall to 0-2.
Luke Brumbaugh opened the scoring with a six yard touchdown pass to Duane Mitchell, putting the Colonials up 6-0. That held until the second quarter when Reid Taubenheim kicked three field goals to put North Dakota up 9-6 at the break.
Owens scored on a two yard run on the opening drive of the third but North Dakota answered with a R.J. McGill touchdown catch from Joe Mollberg. Neither team could find the end zone the rest of the game. The Colonials had a chance to tie the game in the third but Hunter Khaleghi missed a 37 yard field goal. Khaleghi also had a 38 yard attempt blocked in the fourth.
Brumbaugh was 13 of 24 for 149 yards. Mitchell had six catches. North Dakota is now 1-1 on the season.
California 33 – Virginia State 24
In a good one at Adamson Stadium, the Vulcans opened the season with a win. James Harris threw two second quarter touchdown passes as he racked up 280 passing yards.
After a Cody Nuzzo field goal opened the scoring for Cal, Tarian Ayers scored on a one yard run for Virginia State. Cal answered with a short punt return for a touchdown by Jordan Bowman. Ayers came back with a 60 yard pass to Javiar Smallwood on the first play of the second quarter. One play later the Vulcans were back on the board as Harris nailed Garry Brown for a 69 yard touchdown.
Harris connected with Kowan Scott for a 49 yard strike. Ayres followed with a 31 yard pass to Kevon Bellamy to cut the Cal lead to 24-21. Nuzzo added a 20 yard field goal in the second and a 26 yard kick in the third. The Cal defense allowed just three points in the second half, Nuzzo kicked his fourth field goal of the game with 9:37 remaining.
Scott had six catches for 113 yards, former Clairton quarterback Desimon Green had five catches. Ayres was 22 of 44 for 325 yards for Virginia State.
Bentley 27 – Mercyhurst 21
Dan Guadagnoli threw for two touchdowns as Bentley hung on for the home win. Zach Emerick ran for a score and threw for another for the Lakers. Emerick hit T.J. Latimer for a one yard touchdown with 1:51 to play but the Lakers could not get the ball back.
Guadagnoli was 15-22 for 223 yards. Chris Calvanesse had seven catches for 135 yards. Mercyhurst struggled offensively, managing only 150 yards total. Brandon Brown-Dukes had a touchdown run for the Lakers but gained only 58 yards on 15 carries.
Gannon 23 – Southren Connecticut State 7
Liam Nadler threw two touchdown passes and Karch Holland kicked three field goals as the Golden Knights cruised to the home win. Nadler hit Jesstin Hamm for an eight yard score and followed with a 26 yard strike to Brock Jones, both in the second quarter. Jones carried 24 times for 150 yards, Nadler was 16 of 29 for 153 yards.
IUP 41 – St Augustine’s 19
The 20th ranked Crimson Hawks struck early, going out to a 27-0 second quarter lead and did not look back for the home win at George P. Miller Stadium. Luigi Lista-Brinza opened the scoring on a one yard run, he added a seven yard scamper early in the second. Chase Haslett tossed two touchdown passes in the first, one to Drew Carswell, the other to Nick Dubowski.
Izzy Green scored on a 11 yard run in the third, the defenses traded scores. A.J. Gilford threw his second touchdown pass of the game on the final play to close out the scoring.
Lista-Brinza, fresh off a great career at Pittsburgh Central Catholic, ran 21 times for 111 yards, Haslett was 14-20 for 176 yards. Roderick Davenport ran 30 times for 111 yards for St. Augustine’s.
Hiram 30 – Westminster 27
The Titans led 27-3 in the third quarter but could not hold the lead at home in the season opener for both teams.
After both teams traded field goals. Khurazze Williams hauled in a 32 yard touchdown pass from Paul Columbo to give Westminster a 10-3 lead. Freshman Dominique McKinley and Jametrius Bentley added touchdown runs in the second quarter and Justine Dahl kicked his second field goal in the third quarter to stake the Titans to the lead.
Hiram hit the board again in the third quarter as Robert Partridge threw a 31 yard touchdown pass to Nate Eaton. Partridge hit Britton Lewis for an 11 yard score early in the fourth to make the score 27-16. Robert Carr scored on a 1 yard run, the Terriers went for the two pointer but could not convert. The defense held and Hiram got the football back with 2 ½ minutes left in the game. Partridge led his team down the field again, finding Lewis for a 14 yard touchdown with ten seconds to play and the win.
Partridge was 23-40 for 309 yards, Eaton had nine catches, Lewis racked up eight grabs for 145 yards. For Westminster, Bentley carried 22 times for 114 yards.
Thiel 28 – Allegheny 14
Ryan Radke ran for three touchdowns for the Tomcats, the final one putting the Gators away with 13:32 left in regulation to pull away.
The Tomcats ran for 301 yards, Josh Porter led the way with 141 yards on 16 carries. Radke added 89 yards on 11 totes, he also threw for 124 yards. Allegheny cut the lead to seven in the third quarter on touchdown runs by Nick Deichler and Joe Nigro. The Gators have lost 11 straight games.
Case Western Reserve 30 – Carnegie Mellon 0
In the 29th Academic Bowl and the first ever PAC conference game for either team, Case Western Reserve got two touchdown passes and a scoring run from Billy Beecher to pick up the home win.
Beecher threw for 301 yards on 24 of 48. Case Western outgained CMU 498-199 and have now won eight straight against the Tartans.
John Carroll 44 – Saint Vincent 0
Wes Keller threw for just 126 yards but tossed three touchdown passes for the home win at Don Shula Stadium. Tommy Michals added 182 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns. John Carroll is ranked 10th in Division III in the AFCA poll.
Saint Vincent managed just 105 yards in offense, the Bearcats have dropped 22 straight games.
Mount Union 58 – Bethany 7
The third ranked Purple Raiders scored early and often, claiming a 38-0 halftime lead. B.J. Mitchell ran for 63 yards and three scores in the win. QB Kevin Burke threw for 411 yards on 23 of 34. Roman Namdar had eight catches for 162 yards and a score.
The Bison offense struggled, gaining just 211 yards, while the 2013 national runner-up racked up 582 yards of offense.
Waynesburg 33 – Muskingum 0
Carter Hill ran for a score and threw for another and the Yellow Jackets got an interception return by Josh Mundell to pace the Yellow Jackets to the victory. Waynesburg went up 13-0 at the half on a Jerry Lawman four yard run and Hill’s 49 yard pass to Zac Capan. Hill scored on a yard run and Mundell’s Pick 6 put the game out of reach.
Hill finished 13 of 22 for 248 yards. Bernie Thompson caught four passes for 119 yards.
Juniata 21 – Grove City 13
Ward Udinski tossed a 12 yard touchdown pass to Aaron O’Brien with 7:37 remaining in regulation to extend the Juniata lead. Udinski figured in on all three scores, with two one yard touchdown runs to go with the game winning touchdown pass, the quarterback threw for 186 yards and ran for 67 more.
Zach Rader threw a halfback pass for a touchdown to David Folkmire for 31 yards early in the second. Josh Peach scored on a six yard run with just under eleven minutes to play, but the Wolverines failed on the extra point. Grove City could not get out of their own end on the next two possessions. Peach carried 19 times for 88 yards to lead the Wolverines.
