District College Football Recap for September 12th

Week two of the district college football schedule saw wet weather and fall temperatures move into the area, along with great action  Included in that action was overtime in Youngstown and a down to the wire finish in the PAC.

Here are recaps of ALL the games:

Youngstown State 21 – Robert Morris 14 in overtime
The Colonials entered the Ice Castle on Saturday night a decided underdog but took the #17 Penguins to overtime.

Robert Morris scored three plays into the game. The Colonials took advantage of a fumble and Rameses Owens ran 41 yards for the 7-0 lead. That score held up till early in the third when Martin Ruiz scored on a one yard run. Owens scored four plays into the fourth to put the road team back on top. Hunter Wells hit Shane Kuhn for a one yard scamper, tying the game at 14 with seven minutes to play.

Neither team could cross the 50 and the game entered overtime. YSU took the ball first and scored on fourth and goal as Wells hit I’Tavious Harvin for the touchdown and the lead. RMU drove to the five, but Matthew Barr was sacked on on a fourth and three to end the game.

For the Penguins, Jody Webb ran for 99 yards, Ruiz added 95. YSU is now 1-1. RMU falls to 0-2, the Colonials were led by Owens with 152 yards rushing.

Duquesne 26 – Bucknell 7
Dillion Buechel(Montour) threw for three scores and the Dukes defense forced four turnovers for the road win. PJ Fulmore(Cardinal Wurhl North Catholic) ran for 87 yards on 12 carries and Wayne Capers(Char Valley) caught a touchdown pass as Duquesne goes to 2-0.

RJ Nitti threw three interception and was sacked three times as Bucknell falls to 1-1.

Towson 35 – Saint Francis 20
Darius Victor ran for 98 yards and two scores in the home win. Connor Frazier was 16 of 22 for 269 yards, throwing for a score and running for another.

Khairi Dickson, the FCS’s leading rusher in 2014, was held to 36 yards rushing. Zach Drayer and Terell Smith connected for two scores for the Red Flash. Both teams are now 1-1.

Kutztown 34 – IUP 33
Kutztown scored the last 14 points in the fourth to claim the crossover win. Chad Barton hit Kellen Williams with a 63 yard touchdown bomb with 5:18 left. Barton threw for 406 yards and three scores as the Golden Bears go to 1-1.

Lenny Williams(Sto-Rox) ran for a score and threw for another. Chris Temple rushed for 195 yards and a score as IUP dropped their season opener.

Gannon 44 – Cheyney 6
Lian Nadler tossed four touchdown passes, three to Jesstin Hamm as the Golden Knights go to 2-0.Brock Jones added 163 yards rushing on just 13 carries.

Shippensburg 20 – Edinboro 13
The Red Raiders scored 17 points in the second half while holding the Fighting Scots off the board to go to 2-0. Ryan Zapoticky found Jeff Gulyas for a 13 yard strike with 3:19 left in regulation to break a 13-all tie.

Darren Massey had twelve catches for 195 yards and a score. Edinboro is 0-2.

Seton Hill 27 – Lock Haven 10
Jarvis McClam scored on a 36 yard punt return early in the fourth to seal the win. Brandon Stout ran for 130 yards for the Griffins(1-1).

Lock Haven falls io 0-2.

Mercyhurst 37 – West Chester 35
Brendan Boylan scored with 52 seconds left for the Lakers win. Boylan threw for three first half scores, racking 331 yards passing overall. Brandon Brown-Dukes rushed for 120 yards and a score. Mercyhursy is now 2-0, West Chester is 0-2 after starting the season in the top 25.

Slippery Rock 34 – East Stroudsburg 9
The Rock ground out 414 yards and just missed out on three 100 yard rushers in the win. Isaiah Neely(OLSH) ran for 152 yards, Shamar Greene(West Mifflin) added 130. Julian Durden(Montour) ran for 95 and a score. #20 SRU is now 2-0, The Warriors are now 0-2.

Bloomsburg 20 – California 13
The Vulcans led 13-0 in the second nut the Huskies scored the final 20 for the win. Lawrence Kelly ran for 166 yards, including 24 coming on the go-ahead score with 2:40 left. James Harris was picked off three times for Cal. Both teams are 1-1.

W & J 35 – Westminster 31
The 14th ranked Presidents had to rally pin the fourth quarter to hold off a vastly improved Titans team/ Ryan Ruffing(Thomas Jefferson) was held to 84 yards, but scoted four touchdowns in the win, including the go-ahead score with 1:04 remaining.

W & J scored first, set up by a Luke Merhot punt return. Ruffing went in from a yard out to give the Presidents the early lead. Westminster knotted the game on a Kimu Kim 3 yard run. The Titans special teams forced a safety when punter Kevin Mechas was brought down in the end zone and a 9-7 Westminster lead after one.

Todd Jeter(Gateway) added to the lead after a 23 yard Pick 6 and a 16-7 advantage. The Presidents cut the lead to two when Ruffing scored on a seven yard run, capping a twelve play drive. The score stayed the same until late in the third as Paul Columbo found Jametrius Bentley, the play gained 54 yards and a 24-14  Westminster lead heading to the fourth.

Pete Coughlin(Upper St. Clair) started the W & J comeback, completing four straight passes then scoring on a 13 yard run to cut the lead to three. Ruffing added his third td after the defense forced a punt and W & J led 28-24. Westminster called on Kim again, he carried seven times on an eleven play drive and scored on a yard run and a 31-28 lead.

But the Presidents had one last chance. Set up by a good return, Ruffing scored on a short run to lake the lead back. Dan Graziano intercepted Columbo with 40 seconds left to seal the win.

Coughlin led the Presidents, now 2-0, with 210 yards passing on 24 of 35. For the Titans, Dominique McKinley(Greensburg Salem) ran for 162 yards on 22 totes. The Titans fall to 1-1.

Bethany 51 – Thiel 16
Junior Jalen Holmes posted acareer game for the Bison. The former New Castle player ran for 166 yards and two scores in the rout.

Senior Eric Blinn(Western Beaver) continued his assault on the Bethany record book with 185 yards receiving and three scores. Blinn is now the all-time leader in yards at Bethany, his 12 catches leave him two shy of that mark.

Both teams are 1-1.

Geneva 21 – Grove City 16
The GT’s won for the first time in twelve straight road games with the victory. Jared Ellis scored twice for Geneva, the second came midway thru the fourth to put the GT’s up for good. Dylan Jones(Laurel) posted some great numbers, carrying 24 times for 106 yards. Geneva is now 1-1.

The defense did the job as well, picking off five passes. Antonio Carroscia did throw two touchdowns for the Wolverines, now 0-2.

Saint Vincent 28 – Waynesburg 21
Former Pittsburgh Central Catholic standout Dustin Lowman caught touchdowns of 79 and 36 yards as the Bearcats pulled the mild upset at Chuck Noll Field. Ryan Crawford(Wilmington) also caught a td pass from Evan Shimensky, who tossed four on the afternoon. Lowman ended with four catches for 124 yards. Both teams are 1-1.
