High school roundup for April 1, 2019: Shaler edges Class 6A No. 1 Seneca Valley

Hunter Boyan tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts to help Class 5A No. 5 Shaler score a 2-1 win over Class 6A No. 1 Seneca Valley in a nonsection baseball game Monday afternoon.

The Titans (3-2) smacked 10 hits, including a 3-for-4 effort from Boyan, who also had an RBI.

Nick Rispoli and Colin Harger each had two hits, and Jake Bredl and Aiden Williams doubled.

Matt Stanger was 2 for 3 for Seneca Valley (4-1).

California 6, Beth-Center 4 — Brody Connor and Jacob Piktel each knocked in two runs as Class A No. 2 California (2-1) won a nonsection game. Dom Fundy had a two-run single for Beth-Center (0-2).

Carmichaels 11, West Greene 1 (5 inn.) — Dylan Wilson, Nick Ricco and Drake Long all had two RBIs as Carmichaels (3-0) won a nonsection game.

Freedom 4, Western Beaver 0 — Noah Henderson and Kevin Lawrence each had RBIs as Freedom (2-2) won a nonsection game. Noah Yeck allowed one hit and struck out four in four innings for the Bulldogs.

Gateway 8, Butler 4 — Ethan Frenchik had three hits, including a double, as Gateway (3-1) won in nonsection action. The Gators scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie.

Montour 4, Seton LaSalle 2 — Mason Sike was 2 for 3 with a double and RBI and also earned the win on the mound as Montour (4-3) earned a nonsection victory.

North Allegheny 5, Upper St. Clair 3 — C.J. Weller was 3 for 3 with an RBI, as North Allegheny (3-2) picked up a nonsection win on the road. Trevor Freyvogel was the winning pitcher.

Joe Pulit was 2 for 3 with a double for the Tigers.

Ringgold 4, Steel Valley 0 — Josh Peters pitched a shutout as Class 4A No. 3 Ringgold (1-2) won a nonsection game. The Rams scored three runs in the top of the first inning.

Latrobe 5, Peters Township 3 — Host Latrobe (4-1) scored five runs in the fifth inning en route to a nonsection victory. Connor Mondock had the game-winning RBI. Tucker Knupp earned the win, and Ben Rafferty had the save for the Wildcats. Mark Lehman homered for Peters Township (1-2).

Mt. Lebanon 4, Hempfield 0 — Dante Borris was 3 for 3 with a double, and Jack Smith had two RBIs as Mt. Lebanon (3-3) earned a nonsection win over No. 2-ranked Hempfield (4-2) in a Class 6A nonsection game.

Jack Palmerine held Hempfield hitless over four innings to earn the win. Jeffrey Dengler allowed two hits and earned the save.

Phil Fox allowed four hits and struck out four over six innings and took the loss for the Spartans.

Norwin 13, Yough 3 (4 inn.) — Aidan Shephard was 3 for 3 with three doubles, and Logan Liebdzinski and Jayden Walker also had extra-base hits as Norwin (3-0) rolled to a nonsection victory over Yough (2-2). Logan Divald earned the win for the Knights.

Penn-Trafford 2, Hampton 0 — Jordan Sabol reached on an error, scoring Mario Disso, as Penn-Trafford (4-0) won a nonsection game in walk-off fashion. Disso, Luke Fabac and Tyler Chrise had hits for the Warriors. Bobby Kusinsky earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief.

Plum 10, Franklin Regional 9 — Evan Sante’s two-out, two-run double capped a six-run bottom of the ninth inning, lifting Plum to a 10-9 walkoff victory Monday over Franklin Regional in a nonsection game.

The Mustangs (1-2), who gave up six runs to Franklin Regional in the top of the sixth inning, sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and had five hits and two walks. Logan Foster had a pinch-hit RBI single, and Tanner Conklin added a two-run single.

Brandon Lane finished the game with four hits and two RBIs for Plum, while Anthony Frazetta and Chandler Yocca also drove in runs.

Bryson Harper and Thomas Nicely each went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Franklin Regional (0-1).

Highlands 11, Apollo-Ridge 5 — Luke Beer’s two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning put Highlands ahead for good, and the Golden Rams added four more runs in the sixth for a nonsection victory.

Noah Gillette doubled for Highlands (3-1) and picked up the win in relief. Zac Kuniak and Matthew Cekada also doubled, and Jaden Yarris tripled for the Golden Rams.

Donnie Biddle and Jake Fello singled two times each for Apollo-Ridge (1-2).

Fox Chapel 5, Deer Lakes 4Fox Chapel (2-0) had six extra-base hits, including two doubles by Jacob Gruden, en route to a nonsection win. Jonathan Simon had an RBI double in the fourth that scored Gruden and gave Fox Chapel a 4-3 lead. T.J. Johnston and Gavin Donaldson also doubled for the Foxes, and Noah Marks tripled. Marks earned the win in relief.

Greg Geis had a pair of doubles for Deer Lakes (0-2), and Justin Brannagan and Will Meyer had a double apiece.

Serra Catholic 4, Freeport 2 — Alex Glumac struck out 10 batters over six innings, leading Class 2A No. 3 Serra Catholic (5-1) to a nonsection win over Class 3A No. 2 Freeport (3-1).

Softball

Southmoreland 6, Brownsville 0 — In a Section 3-3A game, Jess Matheny tossed a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts and also went 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lift Southmoreland to victory. Lexi Klatt also had two hits and two RBIs, and Emily Eutsey was 2 for 2 with a double and RBI for the Scotties (1-1, 1-1).

Carmichaels 11, McGuffey 3 — Gina Ranieri and Shelbee McCann each were 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Kylie Sinn had two doubles and an RBI as Carmichaels (3-0) won a nonsection game.

Charleroi 14, California 1 (5 inn.) — Cierra Gazi was 3 for 4 with a double, and Sarah Kondratik, Katie Reed and Faith Martin all had two hits to help Charleroi (2-1) win a nonsection game. Kylie Quigley struck out 10 to earn the win.

Freedom 6, Western Beaver 2 — Amber Baumiller knocked in two runs, and Madison Slowinski and Audry Lawrence each were 2 for 2 with an RBI as Class 2A No. 5 Freedom (4-0) won a nonsection contest. Slowinski struck out five in 2 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Mapletown 11, Washington 4 — Mekenzie Reda was 3 for 3, and Hannah Dusenberry had two hits, including a double, to help Mapletown (2-0) win a nonsection game.
