High school roundup for April 18, 2019: No. 4 Knoch takes down No. 3 Greensburg Salem

In a battle of baseball teams in the top five of the TribHSSN Class 4A rankings, No. 4 Knoch upended No. 3 Greensburg Salem, 9-6, in a Section 1 clash Thursday afternoon.

The Knights took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third and extended their advantage with five runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Greensburg Salem (8-2, 4-2) mounted a rally in the top of the seventh with five runs, but Knoch was able to hold on.

Guy Deleonardis collected two hits and two RBIs for Knoch (8-2, 4-2), and Ethan Sloane added two hits and an RBI.

The teams are tied for second place in the section, one game behind No. 2 Yough (7-4, 5-1).

Freeport 9, South Allegheny 0 — Zachary Allen tripled and drove in three runs, and Garrett Ben had a pair of RBIs to guide Class 3A No. 4 Freeport (7-5, 4-2) to a Section 1 victory at South Allegheny (2-8, 1-5). Jarrett Heilman tripled and had an RBI for the Yellowjackets.

Mt. Lebanon 4, Fox Chapel 3 — Dante Borris doubled and singled as Mt. Lebanon (7-7) held off Fox Chapel to earn a nonsection win. Jacob Gruden and Matt Jerpe had a triple each for Fox Chapel (6-3).

Plum 8, Gateway 5 (9 inn.) — Brody Simmons walked with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning to plate the eventual winning run as Plum (6-7) won a nonsection game. Matt Frazetta had an RBI single.

Brandon Lane and James Rose had three hits each for Plum.

Burrell 24, Highlands 12 (5 inn.)Burrell (7-2) plated 20 runs and sent 26 batters to the plate in the third inning en route to a nonsection win at Highlands (7-5). Tyler Mock, Zach Kerr and Jimmy Kuniak had two hits apiece for the Bucs, who drew a dozen walks. The Golden Rams drew eight walks.

Peters Township 5, Canon-McMillan 1 — Mark Lehman doubled in two runs, and Dom Campagna and Jackson McCloskey each had two hits to help Peters Township (8-4, 5-1) win a Section 3-6A game.

South Fayette 15, North Hills 14 (8 inn.) — Nolan Lutz and Nolan Vertullo each had three RBIs to help South Fayette (5-3, 3-2) earn a Section 2-5A victory. Jordan Albright was 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and Tanner Schmitt had three hits and an RBI for the Indians (2-9, 1-4).

Laurel Highlands 3, Chartiers Valley 2 — Justin Brestensky’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Laurel Highlands (7-2, 4-2) to a Section 3-5A win.

Montour 5, Trinity 3 — Dylan Deutsch had two hits and two RBIs, and Logan Persinger was 3 for 4 with an RBI as Montour (7-7, 3-3) won in Section 3-5A.

Beaver Falls 9, Shady Side Academy 7 — Dayln Brickner and Ty Garrett homered to help Beaver Falls (3-7, 2-4) win in Section 2-3A.

Keystone Oaks 13, Charleroi 0 (5 inn.) — Mason Brooks threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as No. 5 Keystone Oaks (7-2, 5-1) won in Section 3-3A. Colby Rockacy was 3 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBIs, and Ben Kvederis also had three hits.

Vincentian Academy 8, Eden Christian Academy 4 — In Section 3-A, Danny Morgano was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Jake Stotsky had two hits and two RBIs as No. 1 Vincentian Academy (5-0, 4-0) earned a victory.

Hampton 7, Penn Hills 6 — Max Smith homered, doubled, singled and had three RBIs to help Hampton (7-4) win a nonsection game.

North Allegheny 12, Hempfield 2 (6 inn.) — Winning pitcher Anthony Hattrup, Joe Manesiotis and Trevor Freyvogel all had two RBIs to lead North Allegheny (7-5) to a nonsection win over Hempfield (6-8).

Latrobe 15, Indiana 2 — Winning pitcher Isaac Echard was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, and Logan Gustafson had three hits as Latrobe (7-5) won a nonsection game.

Mt. Pleasant 7, Jeannette 6 — In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jared Wagner singled home Trevor Mason to tie the game, and an error on Steve Brown’s grounder allowed Regis Sofranko to score the winning run as Mt. Pleasant (5-5) won a nonsection game on a walk-off.

Pete Billey doubled in two runs, and Jonas King was 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Vikings. Derrick Miller was 3 for 5, and Michael McCabe had two RBIs for Jeannette (6-5).

Southmoreland 15, Monessen 2 — Winning pitcher Travis Sipple was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Tyler Constantine also knocked in three runs as Southmoreland (2-7) won a nonsection game. Anthony Govern was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Scotties.

Cam Frolo was 2 for 2 for Monessen (5-4).

Softball

Bethel Park 12, Peters Township 0 (5 inn.) – Gianna Sciullo and Isabella Sciullo each had three hits as no. 2 Bethel Park (9-0, 9-0) won in Section 1-6A.

Canon-McMillan 11, Upper St. Clair 3 — Lindsay Schmidt was 3 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs as Canon-McMillan (7-4, 6-3) won in Section 1-6A. Haley Beardsley homered twice for Upper St. Clair (7-5, 5-4).

Albert Gallatin 15, Laurel Highlands 1 (5 inn.) — Maddy Hershberger was 2 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs as Albert Gallatin (4-6, 4-5) won in Section 1-5A. Maria Sutton threw a three-hitter with four strikeouts.

Gateway 15, Mars 0 (3 inn.) — Maura Ryan threw a two-hitter with four strikeouts as Gateway (6-4, 5-4) won in Section 2-5A. Jordan Henderson was 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Gators.

West Allegheny 14, Montour 0 (5 inn.) — Maci Priddy had two doubles and three RBIs, and Megan Pollinger was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, as No. 5 West Allegheny (6-4, 6-2) won in Section 3-5A. Winning pitcher Angela Costa threw a three-hitter and also had three RBIs for the Indians.

Elizabeth Forward 17, Carrick 0 (3 inn.) — Kailey Larcinese threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts as No. 5 Elizabeth Forward (8-3, 7-0) won in Section 2-4A. Grace Smith had two hits and three RBIs. In the second game of a doubleheader, Elizabeth Forward won 19-0 in three innings. Brooke Markland threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts, and Smith had two hits and four RBIs.

Ringgold 7, McKeesport 6 — Nya Adams homered and had two RBIs, and Jillian Scherer doubled in two runs as Ringgold (4-4, 4-3) won in Section 2-4A.

Vincentian Academy 16, Sto-Rox 0 (3 inn.) — Elizabeth Arnold tossed a no-hitter as No. 4 Vincentian (7-0, 6-0) won in Section 2-2A.

Carmichaels 12, Uniontown 0 — Kylie Sinn tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts as Carmichaels (9-3) won a nonsection game. Emily Conklin doubled in three runs for Carmichaels.

West Greene 11, Chartiers-Houston 9 — Jersey Wise was 3 for 4 with a home run, and Madison Lampe also homered as Class A No. 1 West Greene (9-3) won a nonsection game over Class 2A No. 1 Chartiers-Houston (10-3). Kaitlyn Rizor and McKenna Lampe each had two hits for the Pioneers.

Leechburg 2, Karns City 1 — Emma Ritchie pitched a four-hitter and struck out five to lead Class A No. 2 Leechburg (8-0) to a nonsection win over District 9’s Karns City (10-1). Kristen Knapp had an RBI double, and Tatum Berner added a sacrifice fly for the Blue Devils, who scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first.

Burrell 7, Steel Valley 0 — Cara Fiore had a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Kylie Karns pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Burrell (6-2) in a nonsection win over Steel Valley (1-10). Kayla Santucci had a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the first, and Mia Horwatt doubled.

Valley 19, Woodland Hills 4 (4 inn.) — Andie Jo Conwell singled three times and drove in four runs as Valley won a nonsection game. Conwell also picked up the win with three strikeouts. Casey Gatto doubled twice, singled and had two RBIs. Mackenzie Booker tripled, singled twice and drove in four runs for Valley (2-6).

Knoch 10, New Castle 0 — Amanda Fischer pitched a shutout, striking out 12 as Class 4A No. 3 Knoch defeated New Castle in Section 3.

Fischer also singled twice. Erin Luffy doubled and had five RBIs. Brynnae Coe hit a solo homer, and Bailey Rickenbrode singled four times and had four RBIs for Knoch (8-0, 6-0).

Norwin 2, Seneca Valley 0 — Sydney Lokay tossed a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts as No. 5-ranked Norwin defeated No. 4 Seneca Valley in a Section 2-6A game.

Olivia Mastrilli hit a run-scoring double, and Bailee Bertani homered for the Knights (8-3, 7-2), which has won five of its last six games.

Claire Zimmerman allowed five hits and struck out five in the loss for Seneca Valley (9-3, 6-3).

Connellsville 4, Latrobe 2 — Jena Hixson was 2 for 3 with three RBIs as Connellsville (7-3, 6-2) upset No. 2 Latrobe (10-2, 7-2) in Section 1-5A. Mia Burd tossed a six-hitter with five strikeouts to earn the win.

Jenna Tallman was 2 for 4 for the Wildcats.

Jeannette 19, Ellis School 4 (4 inn.) — Faith Johnston was 3 for 4 with a home run and seven RBIs as Jeannette (5-2, 4-2) won in Section 3-A. Johnston also threw a three-hitter to earn the victory. Taylor-Lynn Finken added three RBIs for the Jayhawks.

Greensburg Salem 6, Belle Vernon 3 — Mattie White had two RBIs, and Kasey Storkel had two hits and an RBI as Greensburg Salem (4-7) won a nonsection game. Rena Caruso threw a five-hitter with four strikeouts to earn the win. Jordan French knocked in two runs for Belle Vernon (5-8).

Penn-Trafford 5, North Allegheny 2 — Morgan Hilty and Samantha Schickel held Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny (10-0) to four hits in leading the Class 5A No. 1 Warriors (10-2) to a nonsection win. Carlee Lamacz had two doubles, and Brooke Cleland had two hits and an RBI for Penn-Trafford.
