High school roundup for April 8, 2019: No. 5 Pine-Richland tops No. 3 Seneca Valley

Josh Johnson went 3 for 3, including a two-run double in the sixth, as No. 5 Pine-Richland went on the road to defeat No. 3 Seneca Valley, 3-1, in a Section 1-6A baseball game Monday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Tommy Beam got the win, allowing one run on six hits while striking out six in 6 1/3 innings pitched. Josh Scherer picked up the save in his first appearance on the year.

Scherer also had an RBI double in the third for the Rams (6-3, 1-0). Drew Robertson’s double in the seventh drove in the lone run for the Raiders (5-2, 0-1).

Armstrong 11, Penn Hills 2 — Eddie Morris homered, singled and had three RBIs to lead Armstrong (5-2, 2-1) to a Section 1-5A win at Penn Hills (0-4, 0-2). Tanner Bordick and Seth Wienskovic had two singles and one RBI each for the River Hawks.

Shaler 1, Moon 0 (8 inn.) — Colin Harger’s single in the eighth inning scored Evan Walsh to give No. 4 Shaler (6-2, 1-0) a Section 2-5A win over No. 1 Moon (4-2, 0-1). Hunter Boyan threw a complete-game five-hitter with a walk to earn the victory.

South Fayette 4, Hampton 3 — Class 5A No. 5 South Fayette scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to rally from a one-run deficit in a Section 2 win. Joey Alcorn went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored for the Lions (3-1, 1-0) and earned the win on the mound. Burke Camper doubled and had a pair of RBIs for the Talbots (2-4, 0-1) and Will Schiut tripled.

Trinity 2, Laurel Highlands 1 — Cam Zaken tossed a seven-hitter with four strikeouts to lead Trinity (7-3, 3-0) to a Section 3-5A victory.

Beaver 15, Ambridge 0 (4 inn.) — The Bobcats put up nine runs in the fourth inning, and pitcher Dom Petrella gave up just one hit as Beaver (3-3, 2-0) rolled past Section 2-4A rival Ambridge (0-7, 0-3).

Belle Vernon 11, West Mifflin 1 (6 inn.) — The Leopards’ Max Gauden singled twice, double, tripled and knocked in three runs to help power Belle Vernon past Section 3-4A rival West Mifflin (1-4, 1-2). Gauden picked up the win from the hill for Belle Vernon (2-3, 2-1).

Steel Valley 11, South Allegheny 1 — Andre Good gave up one hit and struck out five batters, and the Ironmen tallied 12 hits as Steel Valley rolled past Section 1-3A rival South Allegheny. Joe Kraft hit three doubles and drove in two runs and Nick Harhai added a double and three RBIs for Steel Valley (4-4, 3-0). Pitcher Clayton Colecchi took the loss for South Allegheny (1-5, 0-3).

Freedom 10, Ellwood City 7 — Noah Henderson singled twice and drove in three runs to help Freedom (4-3, 2-0) earn a Section 2-3A victory. David Jansen, Kevin Lawrence and Cole Beck had a pair of RBIs each for the Bulldogs. Ricky Pitrelli singled twice, doubled and had three RBIs for Ellwood City (2-4, 1-2).

Hopewell 10, Shady Side Academy 0 (5 inn.) — Pitcher Jake McGovern struck out two batters on his way to delivering a no-hitter as Class 3A No. 1 Hopewell downed Section 2 rival Shady Side Academy (1-2, 0-2). Alex Kunzman doubled, homered and knocked in two runs for Hopewell (5-2, 3-0).

Keystone Oaks 11, Washington 0 — Sam Tortorella struck out 14 batters on his way to throwing a no-hitter to lead Keystone Oaks past Section 3-3A rival Washington (1-6, 0-3). Ben Kvederis and Mason Brooks both tripled and tallied three RBIs for Keystone Oaks (3-2, 2-1).

Carmichaels 8, Fort Cherry 3 — The Mikes broke the game open with a six-run second inning as Carmichaels picked up the home win over Section 1-AA rival Fort Cherry (4-3, 1-1). Pitcher Gavin Pratt picked up the win and notched two RBIs for Carmichaels (5-1, 2-1).

Serra Catholic 3, Seton LaSalle 0 — Mark Black hit a three-run homer in the second inning to supply the scoring as Class 2A No. 3 Serra Catholic picked up the win over Seton LaSalle in a Section 3 matchup. Pitcher Alex Glumac got the win for Serra Catholic (6-1, 1-0). Drew Lafferty took the loss for Seton LaSalle (5-2, 2-1).

Quigley Catholic 14, Aliquippa 1 (5 inn.) — Brothers DJ and Dawson Summers combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter for Class A No. 4 Quigley Catholic (2-4, 1-0) in a Section 1 victory over Aliquippa (0-2, 0-2). DJ pitched four innings with 10 strikeouts and Dawson finished off the game by pitching the fifth. Alex Tomsic homered, singled and drove in four runs.

Monessen 16, Geibel 1 (3 inn.) — Greyhounds pitcher Jake Sacco pitched a one-hitter and Vinny Rhome knocked in four runs as Monessen (3-2, 2-1) rolled to a big win over Section 2-A rival Geibel (0-4, 0-2).

Central Valley 10, Beaver Falls 6Central Valley (1-3) scored six runs in the top of the third inning, erasing an early 4-0 deficit en route to a nonsection victory. Michael Sittig doubled and drove in three runs for the Warriors. Dayln Bricker doubled and tripled for Beaver Falls (1-5).

Cornell 6, Carlynton 4 — Hunter Smith pitched four innings and struck out five for Cornell (2-2) in a nonsection win. Anthony DeVita singled three times and drove in a trio of runs for Carlynton (1-5).

Yough 7, Mt. Pleasant 2Yough scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and held on for a Section 1-4A win.

Cody Ulander was 3 for 4, and Caden Kastronis and Vinny Martin doubled for the No. 4-ranked Cougars (5-2, 3-0).

Asher O’Connor doubled in two runs for Mt. Pleasant (3-2, 2-1).

Hempfield 4, Plum 2 (8 inn.) — Phil Fox delivered a squeeze bunt to score a run, and Reed Hipps followed with a run-scoring single as the Spartans (6-3, 1-0) broke a tie in the top of the eighth and posted Section 2-6A win over the Mustangs (3-5, 0-1). Christian Zilli hit a solo home run to give Hempfield a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh, but Plum rallied as Tallon Auth walked and later scored on a fielder’s choice to send the game into extra innings.

Penn-Trafford 8, Connellsville 1 — The Warriors (8-0, 1-0) scored runs in six innings en route to a Section 2-6A win.

Franklin Regional 4, Kiski Area 0 — The Panthers put up two runs in the first inning en route to a Section 1-5A win. Tom Kegerreis and Mike Klingensmith homered for Franklin Regional (3-1, 3-0), and Palmer Jackson picked up the win, giving up two hits over seven innings. Pitcher Billy Perroz took the loss for Kiski Area (3-3, 0-2).

Greensburg Salem 11, Derry 2 — Dajauhn Hertzog had two doubles and four RBIs, and Matt Wicker had two triples and three RBIs to lead No. 1 Greensburg Salem (6-0, 2-0) to a Section 1-4A win.

Waynesburg 18, Southmoreland 3 (5 inn.) — Jesse Johnson had three hits and three RBIs to guide Waynesburg (2-2, 1-1) to a Section 3-3A win over Southmoreland (2-3, 0-2).

Jeannette 8, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Alex Vickers threw a complete-game one-hitter with four strikeouts to guide Jeannette (4-1, 1-0) to a Section 3-2A victory. Derrick Miller had two hits and three RBIs, and Seth Howard had three hits and two RBIs for the Jayhawks.

Cameron Bush went 1 for 2 for Apollo-Ridge (1-4, 0-1).

Greensburg Central Catholic 4, Leechburg 2Leechburg led 2-1 after five innings, but Class A No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (2-5, 1-0) plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a comeback victory in Section 3.

Leechburg pitcher Jacob Pochiba struck out seven over six innings and surrendered three earned runs. Mario Leonard and Jake Blumer had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils (1-4, 0-1). Tom Voelker tripled and drove in two runs for the Centurions.

Highlands 2, Deer Lakes 0 — Noah Gillette was the best a pitcher can get Monday.

The Highlands senior, a Pitt-Johnstown recruit, pitched a no-hitter to lift the Golden Rams to a nonsection victory.

Gillette walked four and struck out four in his seven innings of work. He also drove in one of Highlands’ two runs with a double. Zac Kuniak doubled for the Golden Rams (4-3), and Tanner Nulph singled twice.

Andrew Bokulich took the loss for Deer Lakes (4-5).

Freeport 4, Valley 0 — Jarrett Heilman notched 11 strikeouts in a complete-game performance that led Class 3A No. 3 Freeport (5-3, 2-1) to a Section 1 win. Matt Mitchell and Zachary Allen had two singles each for the Yellowjackets. John Luke Bailey and Ben Aftanas singled twice for Valley (0-6, 0-2).

St. Joseph 14, Springdale 4 (6 inn.) — Dom Fellowes went 3 for 5 with a double, triple and three RBIs for St. Joseph (3-2, 1-0) in a Section 3-A win. C.J. Singleton singled twice, drove in a run and pitched four innings, allowing one unearned run to get the win. Hayden Mallin singled, tripled and plated a pair of runs. Isaac Kern singled three times and had an RBI for the Dynamos (0-4, 0-1).

Burrell 15, East Allegheny 2 (6 inn.) — Eli Ferres and Trent Valovchik had a single and a double apiece for No. 4 Burrell (4-1, 2-1) in a Section 1-3A win at East Allegheny (0-3, 0-2). Bucs pitcher Josh Logsdon struck out five over four innings to earn the win.

Fox Chapel 11, Woodland Hills 1 — Noah Marks tallied three RBIs as Fox Chapel rolled past the Wolverines in a Section 1-5A matchup. James Patterson and TJ Johnston both knocked in two runs for Fox Chapel (4-1, 2-1). Vinnie Ninehouser gave up three hits over four innings to get the win.

Knoch 4, Indiana 1 — Jack Bartek pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts, propelling Class 4A No. 5 Knoch (5-1, 2-1) to a Section 1 win. Tucker Scully singled in two runs for Knoch in the fourth inning, and Ethan Sloane, Sean McGill and Braden Tristani had two hits apiece.

Softball

Hampton 12, Woodland Hills 0 (5 inn.) — Bella Nordic gave up one hit and struck out nine as the Talbots blanked Section 2-5A rival Woodland Hills. Caitlin McCarthy tallied three RBIs for Hampton (6-0, 5-0).

Serra Catholic 15, Northgate 4 (5 inn.) — The Eagles tallied six runs in the fifth inning to get the early finish as Serra Catholic picked up the Section 2-2A win over the Flames. Lizie Fite and Kaitlyn Conrad both tallied four RBIs for Serra Catholic (3-2, 2-1). Lexie Fite got the win for the Eagles. Zophia Gallick took the loss for Northgate (1-5, 0-3).

Hempfield 6, Seneca Valley 4 — Hanna Pausek homered and had three RBIs, and Madison Springer knocked in two runs as Hempfield (4-3, 4-1) won in Section 2-6A. Laura Fox had two doubles and three hits in the win.

Norwin 12, Pine-Richland 8 — Alexandra Dillner had two home runs and four RBIs, and Carly Cook knocked in three runs as Norwin (4-2, 3-2) won in Section 2-6A.

Franklin Regional 6, Albert Gallatin 5 — Mallory Hallock tripled home three runs to help Franklin Regional (5-3, 4-1) win a Section 1-5A game.

Latrobe 5, Kiski Area 1 — Jordan Tallman had 13 strikeouts to pace Class 5A No. 1 Latrobe (8-0, 5-0) to a Section 1 victory over Kiski Area (0-5, 0-5). Makayla Muchinski tripled and drove in a pair of runs for the Wildcats. Jenna Tallman and Mattalyn Harr had a double apiece.

Penn-Trafford 13, Armstrong 1 (5 inn.) — Carlee Lamacz and Emma Armstrong hit two home runs each as No. 3 Penn-Trafford (6-0, 5-0) won in Section 1-5A. Brooke Cleland also homered for the Warriors. Morgan Nedley was 3 for 3 with two doubles. Morgan Hilty threw a three-hitter to earn the win.

Indiana 5, Greensburg Salem 2 — Sara Zimmerman, Haleigh Zimmerman and Alexis Bonatch had two hits and an RBI each as Indiana (4-3, 1-2) won a Section 1-4A game. Sydney Tressler was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Golden Lions (2-4, 1-2).

Mt. Pleasant 7, Highlands 0 — Mary Smithnosky struck in 11 batters in a complete game shutout for Class 4A No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (6-0, 3-0) in a Section 1 victory. Katie Hutter doubled and tripled for the Vikings, and Abby Swank doubled twice.

Yough 1, Uniontown 0 — Kierra Waywood threw a two-hitter with nine strikeouts as No. 2 Yough (5-3, 3-0) won a Section 1-4A game. Waywood, Savannah Manns and Kaylynn Odelli had hits for the Cougars.

Burrell 20, Derry 7 — The Bucs combined for seven home runs, including Lea Coffman’s two three-run homers, as Burrell powered past Section 1-3A rival Derry. Kayla Santucci doubled, homered and had three RBIs for Burrell (3-2, 2-1). Kylie Karns picked up the win. Allison Baum homered and added two RBIs, and pitcher Kiley Latshaw took the loss for Derry (1-4, 1-2).

South Park 1, Southmoreland 0 — In Section 3-3A, Jess Dean’s home run lifted South Park (6-2, 3-2) to a win over No. 4 Southmoreland (2-2, 2-2). Jess Matheny threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts for the Scotties.

Jeannette 11, St. Joseph 6 — Alora Dunmire had three hits and four RBIs, and Abby Mortimore also had three hits to help Jeannette (2-2, 2-2) win in Section 3-A. Faith Johnston struck out eight in the win.

Ligonier Valley 3, Punxsutawney 1 — Jane Garver threw a three-hitter to secure a nonsection win for Ligonier Valley (6-0).

Knoch 7, Quaker Valley 0 — Amanda Fischer pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts, propelling Class 4A No. 4 Knoch (6-0, 3-0) to a Section 3 win over Quaker Valley (1-3, 1-2). The Knights plated three runs in the fourth with two outs. Erin Luffy had a double followed by RBI singles from Quinn Hughes, Liv Vissari and Brynnae Coe. Bailey Rickenbrode tripled for the Knights.

Leechburg 18, Geibel 0 (3 inn.) — Emma Ritchie singled, doubled, drove in three runs and pitched three perfect innings with five strikeouts to guide Class A No. 3 Leechburg (5-0, 4-0) to a Section 3 victory over Geibel (0-3, 0-3). Aubrey Skeel had two hits, including a double and three RBIs, and Kristen Knapp singled twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Freeport 15, East Allegheny 4 (5 inn.) — Emily Schmidt had three hits, including a home run, to help Freeport (4-0, 3-0) cruise to a Section 1-3A victory at East Allegheny (0-4, 0-3). Ally DeJidas also homered for the Yellowjackets.

Riverview 8, Shady Side Academy 5 — The Raiders broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the fourth inning, and Alyssa Cappa struck out 12 batters to help lead Riverview past Section 2-2A opponent Shady Side Academy. Katelyn Davis notched two RBIs, and Molly Collins knocked in a run for Riverview (3-2, 2-2).
